Baszler, Jax Beat Bayley, Banks; Win WWE Women's Tag Titles at Payback 2020

Aug 30, 2020

Shayna Baszler and Nia Jax beat Bayley and Sasha Banks at Payback on Sunday night to win the WWE Women's Tag Team Championships.

Baszler dethroned the champions almost all on her own.

She went to place the Muta Lock on Banks before Bayley tried to break up the submission. The Queen of Spades then wrapped The Role Model in the Kirifuda Clutch while keeping The Legit Boss' legs tied up.

Banks' attempt to stop Baszler was similarly unsuccessful, and the former MMA fighter even used The Boss' arm to choke out Bayley.

On August 14, it was announced that Banks and Bayley would have to defend the women's tag team titles at Payback, but that was before their scheduled singles title matches at SummerSlam last weekend.

Both Banks and Bayley had to defend their respective singles titles against Asuka in separate matches. The Role Model beat The Empress of Tomorrow to retain the SmackDown Women's Championship in the first match thanks, in part, to some interference from The Boss.

But when Bayley had the chance to return the favor later in the night, she failed, and Asuka made Banks tap out to win back the Raw women's title.

Bayley faced Baszler in a singles match on Monday's episode of Raw, but it was interrupted by Jax, who attacked The Queen of Spades amid their ongoing feud.

Banks and Bayley got so far under their skin, though, that Baszler and Jax decided to join forces and challenge for the tag titles at Payback.

Also on Monday's Raw, Banks received a rematch for the women's title in a lumberjack match. Bayley was one of those surrounding the ring, but when she tried to get involved, Baszler prevented her from doing so.

That resulted in Asuka tapping The Boss out once again, meaning The Golden Role Models would enter Payback with one championship missing from their collection.

Banks and Bayley seemingly had the advantage at Payback since they are longtime tag team partners and friends, but it was also clear The Boss was frustrated with The Role Model's inability to help her beat The Empress.

Baszler and Jax had some issues in their own right, but they are dominant forces individually, which made them a legitimate threat to end Banks and Bayley's title reign at just over three months.

The unlikely pairing overcame their issues to win the straps, and they may have created more trouble for the former champions in the process.

We are just one week removed from SummerSlam, but WWE is already putting on another pay-per-view with Sunday's Payback event.

A lot of the card is made up of rematches from the past couple of weeks, but with the return of Roman Reigns, the universal title picture just got a lot more interesting.

Other Payback Thoughts

Reigns aligning himself with Paul Heyman came as a genuine shock to most of the WWE Universe. This alliance opens the door for several interesting possibilities, one of which includes The Big Dog becoming a heel.

Reigns has been a good guy for the majority of his WWE career, but everyone who was there when The Shield first arrived on the scene will remember him as a villain at first.

One also has to wonder what this means for Brock Lesnar? He and Heyman are longtime partners, and The Beast has a rivalry with Reigns going back a few years. Have they made peace, or will Heyman have to choose between his clients when Lesnar eventually returns?

The ongoing storyline between Banks and Bayley has been one of the most enjoyable programs to watch in recent months. With The Boss now without the Raw women's title, will she turn on her best friend if they lose the tag belts too?

They have a long and complicated history dating back to their days in NXT together. They have been allies and enemies several times, so WWE is taking its time with this storyline to make sure it feels different from every other time they have had issues.

The rest of the card is fine, but most, if not all of the matches scheduled will be repeats of bouts we have seen in the past two weeks.

With one week between PPVs, WWE is running the risk of wearing out its fans, especially since All Elite Wrestling will be airing All Out next weekend.

The Thunderdome concept appears to be here to stay until WWE can begin having fans attend shows again. Let's hope they go easy on the fake crowd noise this week.

Asuka Beats Sasha Banks, Wins Raw Women's Title at WWE SummerSlam 2020

Aug 23, 2020

Asuka beat Sasha Banks at WWE SummerSlam on Sunday night to become a two-time Raw women's champion.

The match against Banks was the second of two bouts on the night for The Empress of Tomorrow, as she won a triple-brand Battle Royal on SmackDown to earn a shot at the blue brand's title against Bayley as well.

She was unsuccessful in her first effort on Sunday night but managed to collect gold on her second try.

Bayley attempted to involve herself in the match from the ring apron but ate an elbow from Asuka for her efforts. That left her unable to aid Banks when the champion was stuck in the Asuka Lock. Unable to count on her tag team partner for help, The Legit Boss tapped out.

After the match, Bayley appeared to be apologetic toward Banks in the ring, but it remains to be seen whether their friendship will be impacted by events at SummerSlam.

The clash between Banks and Asuka was their third singles meeting since last month, as they previously wrestled at Extreme Rules and then again on Raw.

Their Extreme Rules match ended in controversy, as Asuka inadvertently misted the referee, resulting in Bayley stealing his shirt and then counting the pin in favor of Banks. The Boss left with the Raw women's title, but her win was not official.

Stephanie McMahon announced that in order to determine the true champion, Asuka and Banks would face each other on Raw with the added stipulation that the title could be won by any means, including disqualification or count-out.

Banks and Bayley used that rule to their advantage, as The Role Model viciously attacked Kairi Sane backstage. With The Pirate Princess screaming for her friend to help her, The Empress walked out on her match.

Banks won by count-out and claimed the title in the process. While she didn't really beat Asuka fair and square, it was enough to earn her a fifth reign as Raw women's champion.

With Asuka losing the title and her best friend in the process, she made it clear that she had revenge on her mind and wanted a rematch for the Raw Women's Championship. McMahon obliged and granted her one, much to Sasha's dismay.

On the go-home episode of Raw prior to SummerSlam, Banks and Bayley teamed up against Asuka and Shayna Baszler in a tag match. They were the final two women remaining in the Battle Royal to determine a No. 1 contender for the SmackDown women's title, so they weren't necessarily on great terms, but they made for a good team.

Baszler made Bayley tap out, which meant Banks and The Role Model entered SummerSlam without momentum on their side.

That put the champions in a difficult position, but Asuka had a big challenge ahead of her in her own right with two huge matches on the same night.

Despite the uphill climb, Asuka beat Banks for the Raw title at SummerSlam, meaning The Boss' unfortunate pattern of short championship reigns has continued.

However, Banks and Bayley will need to put any issues from Sunday to one side ahead of their defense of the WWE Women's Tag Team Championships at Payback next weekend.
