Bianca Belair and Sasha Banks Set New Standard at WrestleMania 37, Night 1

Apr 11, 2021

Bianca Belair and Sasha Banks just reset the bar at WrestleMania 37.

When Drew McIntyre and Bobby Lashley went on first Saturday night with the WWE title on the line after a delay due to inclement weather, it was 100 percent clear Belair and Banks would be free to do something special in the main event.

What they did was historic.

There's a lot that goes into a WrestleMania main event being historic, yet somehow these two reveled in the occasion. They hit the ring as bitter rivals but didn't start fighting as soon as the bell rang. Instead, both seemed close to tears given the monumental scene.

The scene being this, as explained by Banks before The Show of Shows, according to Abhilash Mendhe of Sportskeeda: "[This] is the first time ever that two African-American women will be headlining [breaks into tears] a WrestleMania. This is crazy because this is bigger than me. And I think that's what the beautiful thing is."

Given the talent involved, it isn't too surprising Banks and Belair managed to match the immense expectations and put on what could be considered one of the best WrestleMania main events ever.

Simply put, the folks behind actually booking the contest knew what they were doing from the jump here. It wouldn't be surprising to find out the company had this exact match in mind when anointing Belair as the women's Royal Rumble winner.

Written another way, Banks is the perfect fit for Belair; not just from a mentor standpoint, either. They proved the in-ring aspect of that idea Saturday night when they combined for jaw-dropping feat after feat. Whether it was Belair carrying her opponent and tossing her into the ring after catching a dive attempt or just ragdolling her around, Banks' status as one of the best sellers in the company made things about as good as they can get.

Through it all, the match struck that rare balance that few bouts seem to find. There were some near-finishes, sure, but it never felt like it was overdone. There was a little finisher-spam, but not too much. Banks, despite getting walloped—even having her side ripped open by Belair's whipping hair—never seemed to be out of it. The whole match felt like a 50-50 affair.

It takes a lot of ambition and even more talent to make that all come together during a normal match, let alone one resetting the stage with longstanding implications for all walks of life.

Feel free to tack on the fact that this was the first big event with fans in the stands in more than a year as WWE slowly creeps out of the pandemic era, yet another bit of pressure making the feat for these two Superstars all the more impressive.

It's only fitting the bar getting reset here positions all involved in a great way from a story perspective, too. Belair's ascent to top-of-card status has now been set, and she isn't going anywhere, ever, after a 'Mania moment like this

Even in a loss, Banks gets the reward of main-eventing a WrestleMania in a historic showing as well. Reward, because she was one of those few Superstars who somehow managed to flourish during the strange audience-less era and not suffer setbacks on multiple fronts.

The Boss has always been one of the best in the world, but she elbowed her way into being a company-carrying presence at a time when everyone needed her the most. She's now sitting with a legacy-defining match on what was already a Hall of Fame resume.

In a way, the whole match was pretty symbolic of the entire night. A ho-hum card seemed to exceed expectations at every turn, with Lashley winning and setting the stage for something special for the long term, Cesaro and Seth Rollins predictably putting on a classic, and Bad Bunny rewriting expectations for what a non-wrestler with a passion for it can do when given the chance.

However, Banks and Belair justifiably went on last, seized the moment and ran with it. It wasn't just a fun match that showcased two top talents and featured a title change—it furthered wrestling as a whole on multiple fronts.

Bianca Belair Beats Sasha Banks, Wins SmackDown Women's Title at WrestleMania 37

Apr 11, 2021

Bianca Belair defeated Sasha Banks on Night 1 of WrestleMania 37 on Saturday to win the SmackDown Women's Championship, marking her first singles title in WWE.

The EST of WWE was clearly emotional upon entering the ring, but she soon found her focus as she went head-to-head with The Boss.

And after a historic and hard-fought main event on the opening night of The Show of Shows, Belair used her K.O.D. finisher to seal the win and the championship.

Belair established herself as the No. 1 contender when she won the 2021 women's Royal Rumble match. Not only did she win, but she also nearly went wire-to-wire, prevailing from the No. 3 entry spot.

The EST has long been viewed as the next big thing in women's wrestling, but Banks has been one of the standard-bearers for some time, and she returned to the top of the mountain in October when she beat Bayley for the SmackDown women's title in a Hell in a Cell match.

Once Belair won the women's Rumble match, it seemed clear she and Banks were on a collision course, and The EST made it official on March 5 when she challenged The Boss to a WrestleMania contest.

Amid the build to their clash at The Show of Shows, Belair and Banks became somewhat reluctant teammates in a feud with Shayna Baszler and Nia Jax over the WWE Women's Tag Team Championships.

At Elimination Chamber on Feb. 21, Banks and Belair lost due in part to interference from Reginald, who attempted to hand The Boss a champagne bottle to use in the match. She got pinned by Jax, and Belair was none too pleased with the result.

On the March 12 episode of SmackDown, Belair got pinned by Tamina in a tag team loss to the duo of Tamina and Natalya, and Banks being preoccupied with Reginald was a big reason why.

Despite the miscommunications, Belair and Banks challenged Baszler and Jax for the titles again at Fastlane on March 21, and they lost again, which led to Sasha slapping Bianca in the face.

After that pay-per-view, the focus primarily shifted toward the rivalry between Belair and Banks rather than their partnership, and it helped put the spotlight on one of the most significant women's feuds and matches in WrestleMania history.

The bout was especially huge from a representation perspective, as it marked the first WrestleMania singles match ever between two Black women.

Belair prevailed on The Grandest Stage of Them All, but both performers looked like massive stars and are poised for big things in the future.

WWE Superstars Sasha Banks and Bianca Belair will headline the first night of WrestleMania 37, a two-evening event that will take place Saturday and Sunday in Tampa, Florida's Raymond James Stadium.

Banks will be defending her SmackDown's Women's Championship against Belair, who won the women's Royal Rumble in January as the No. 3 participant.

Belair had the option to challenge Banks or Raw women's champion Asuka at WrestleMania. In February, she announced Banks would be her opponent.

Banks, a five-time Raw women's champion before moving to the blue brand, has held the belt since beating Bayley at Hell in a Cell in October 2020.

Belair, who was with NXT from 2017-2020 before joining the main roster last year, will be wrestling for the world title for the first time in her career.
