The red-hot Kansas City Chiefs are in full control of the AFC West.

Kansas City defeated the Los Angeles Chargers 34-28 in Thursday's thrilling overtime divisional showdown at SoFi Stadium. Patrick Mahomes found Travis Kelce for the winning score and led the way for the victors, who improved to 10-4 with their seventh consecutive win.

Not only are the Chiefs now two games clear in the division, but they also moved temporarily ahead of the 9-4 New England Patriots and Tennessee Titans in the battle for the AFC's only first-round bye.

An impressive showing from Justin Herbert wasn't enough for the Chargers, who saw their two-game winning streak come to an end as they fell to 8-6.

Notable Player Stats

  • Patrick Mahomes, QB, KC: 31-of-47 passing for 410 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT
  • Travis Kelce, TE, KC: 10 catches for 191 yards, 2 TDs
  • Tyreek Hill, WR, KC: 12 catches for 148 yards, 1 TD
  • Justin Herbert, QB, LA: 22-of-38 passing for 236 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT; 5 carries for 16 yards, 1 TD
  • Keenan Allen, WR, LA: 6 catches for 78 yards, 1 TD

Mahomes Overcomes Early Struggles, Puts on Late Show

Kansas City's 3-4 start meant it had to play near perfect football to have a realistic chance at landing the AFC's only first-round bye, but that has largely been the case for Mahomes and Co. of late.

That perfect football was on display early for the visitors, as the defense forced a turnover on downs and notched an interception in the first quarter while the offense marched 95 yards on its first possession with fullback Michael Burton finishing the job with a touchdown.

However, that momentum was short-lived with two straight drives stalling in a field goal and punt before Joey Bosa's strip-sack of Mahomes preserved the Chargers' lead heading into halftime.

Those offensive issues continued in the second half when the Chiefs' first drive stalled in the red zone for a field goal before Mahomes made two uncharacteristic mistakes in key moments.

The first came on a fourth-down play from the Chargers' 2-yard line when he appeared to lose the grip on the ball and threw it into the ground when Mecole Hardman was wide open, and the second came when he threw an interception to Uchenna Nwosu deep in his own territory to set up a Los Angeles touchdown.

Mahomes wouldn't be Mahomes if he didn't bounce back, and he did just that with two incredible drives. The first one featured a long completion to Kelce to set up a Tyreek Hill touchdown, while the second one saw the quarterback evade pressure multiple times, break free for a critical run and then find Kelce for the touchdown that forced overtime.

The ending felt inevitable when the Chiefs won the overtime coin toss, and Mahomes made sure of it with a dime to Kelce, who broke free from Los Angeles' secondary and did the rest himself.

Missed Opportunities Cost Chargers

Los Angeles entered this showdown with a wide variety of possibilities at one game back in the race for the AFC's No. 1 seed but just one game ahead in the loss column of six teams with six losses battling for wild-card spots.

While the home team answered the pressure with a 14-10 halftime lead thanks to two touchdowns from Herbertโ€”one on a run and one on a strike to Jalen Guytonโ€”it was left thinking about what could have been thanks to missed opportunities.

After all, it had 1st-and-goal from the 5-yard line on two different occasions and came away with no points. Throw in a Herbert interception to Anthony Hitchens on another possession, and the Chargers left plenty of points on the board.

The Chargers also had far bigger worries than the missed chances since tight end Donald Parham Jr. was stretchered off the field during the first quarter in a scary scene. The team later announced he was hospitalized and in stable condition.

In the second half, Los Angeles turned it over on downs again on a 4th-and-2 in Kansas City territory when Herbert couldn't connect with Jared Cook, who also dropped a surefire touchdown in the first half. Its next drive saw Keenan Allen miss a wide-open Mike Williams for a possible touchdown on a trick play before Joshua Kelley stunningly fumbled on the Chiefs' 1-yard line.

To the offense's credit, it scored with a short field after Nwosu's interception and then scored a go-ahead touchdown with just more than two minutes remaining when Herbert fired a throw through a tight window to Allen. However, it was the defense that missed its opportunity this time, giving up two touchdowns in the fourth quarter and another in overtime to lose.

What's Next?

Both teams face AFC foes in Week 16 when the Chiefs host the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Chargers travel to play the Houston Texans.

Chris Jones Won't Play for Chiefs vs. Chargers Due to COVID-19 Protocols

Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman Chris Jones has been ruled out for Thursday night's game against the Los Angeles Chargers after being placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list earlier this week, per ESPN's Field Yates

Jones was the second Chiefs player placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list, joining wide receiver Josh Gordon, who was moved to the list Monday.

Jones missed two games earlier this season with a wrist injury but has appeared in each of Kansas City's last seven games. The 27-year-old is having another impressive season with seven sacks, five passes defended, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, 20 tackles, six tackles for a loss and 14 quarterback hits.

Jones has been durable through his six-year career, appearing in at least 13 games in each season entering the 2021 campaign. He also played every game in each of his first three seasons in the NFL.

With Jones sidelined, Alex Okafor figures to see more playing time. The 30-year-old has 1.5 sacks, one pass defended, one forced fumble, 19 tackles and five quarterback hits through 13 games this year.

The Chiefs are already without cornerback Lโ€™Jarius Sneed and linebacker Willie Gay. Sneed is away from the team following the death of his brother, and Gay was ruled out after being placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list after Gordon and Jones.

Kansas City could have a difficult time with Justin Herbert and the Chargers offense with three of its top four defenders sidelined. The Chargers are averaging 280.3 passing yards per game (fifth in the NFL).

In addition, the Chiefs are allowing the seventh-most passing yards per game (252 yards). So, it could be a long night for the Kansas City defense.

Chargers' Keenan Allen Activated from Reserve/COVID-19 List Ahead of Chiefs Game

The Los Angeles Chargers are getting one of their most important players back ahead of Thursday night's game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Per ESPN's Field Yates, the Chargers have activated leading wide receiver Keenan Allen off the reserve/COVID-19 list and he is on track to play in the crucial AFC West showdown.

Allen was placed in the league's health and safety protocols on Dec. 6, forcing him to sit out last Sunday's win over the New York Giants. Los Angeles improved to 8-5 with the victory and is one game behind the division-leading Chiefs, who are 9-4.

Allen leads the Chargers with 86 receptions and 929 yards to go with four receiving touchdowns. Despite missing a game, Allen's 124 targets are 25 more than Los Angeles' second-leading receiver Mike Williams.

The 29-year-old has spent his entire nine-year career with the Chargers. Allen made an immediate impact as a rookie, finishing with 1,046 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. He's been selected to the Pro Bowl in each of the last four seasons.

Allen's return comes at a significant time for Los Angeles. A win on Thursday would give the Chargers a 2-0 season sweep over Kansas City and cause a massive shakeup in the AFC playoff race.

Los Angeles is averaging 39 points over its last two games. But things won't be easy against the Chiefs, who look like they're clicking on all cylinders during their six-game win streak. Kansas City is coming off a 48-9 win over the Raiders and has held four out of its last five opponents to under 10 points.

Josh Gordon Placed on Chiefs' Reserve/COVID-19 List Ahead of Chargers Game

The Kansas City Chiefs placed wide receiver Josh Gordon on the reserve/COVID-19 list on Monday, per NFL reporter Aaron Wilson.

The status of Gordon is not yet known for the Chiefs' AFC West road matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 15.

Gordon caught his first touchdown since 2019 in Kansas City's 48-9 blowout win over the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. On Monday, he tweeted, "Thankful for this opportunity."

The 30-year-old signed with the Chiefs' practice squad on Sept. 28 after being reinstated from suspension. He was signed to the team's active roster on Oct. 5. In nine games, Gordon has four catches for 27 yards and a score.

Gordon was once one of the most explosive wide receivers in the NFL, but substance use issues have followed him throughout his career. He was suspended indefinitely on Jan. 15 violating the terms in place for a conditional reinstatement under the league's policy on substances of abuse.

Gordon had to successfully complete a treatment program monitored by the league before his reinstatement. He was also randomly drug tested in the three months prior to being allowed back into the NFL, and he passed all his tests.

Kansas City is 9-4 and riding a six-game winning streak. Thursday's game against Los Angeles (8-5) will likely be crucial to determining the winner of the division. In the first meeting between the two teams in Week 3, the Chargers came away with a 30-24 victory.

Patrick Mahomes: Chiefs Heard About Raiders' Pregame Huddle on Logo Before Blowout

Dec 12, 2021

The Kansas City Chiefs certainly looked motivated during Sunday's 48-9 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders.

Patrick Mahomes told CBS Sports' Evan Washburn the Chiefs heard that the Raiders gathered for a pregame huddle on the midfield logo prior to the game.

"I know last time, [the Raiders] were doing bus laps around [Arrowhead Stadium], so we definitely wanted to make sure we were winning this time," Mahomes added.

Mahomes was ruthlessly efficient during the win, completing 20 of his 24 passes for 258 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions. Clyde Edwards-Helaire added two scores on the ground, while Derrick Gore tallied 66 yards and a touchdown on nine carries.

The offense didn't have to do too much thanks to the strong play of Kansas City's defense, which scored a touchdown on the first snap from scrimmage when Mike Hughes scooped up a fumble and ran it into the end zone.

Derek Carr threw for 263 yards, one touchdown and one interception on 45 attempts, while Josh Jacobs had just 24 yards on the ground as the Raiders had to turn away from the running game thanks to an early deficit.

It was yet another blowout win over the rival Raiders after Kansas City handled Las Vegas 41-14 on Nov. 14.

Despite a slow 3-4 start to the campaign, Mahomes and Co. are now in full control of the AFC West and look like Super Bowl contenders once again as they extended their winning streak to six with Sunday's performance.

They are now tied with the New England Patriots and Tennessee Titans for the best record in the AFC and have an opportunity to clinch the conference's only first-round bye if they continue to play at such an elevated level.

It would probably benefit future opponents not to give Kansas City any additional motivation either, which is apparently exactly what the Raiders did Sunday.

Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs Extend Winning Streak with Blowout over Derek Carr, Raiders

The Kansas City Chiefs remain one of the hottest teams in the NFL, earning their sixth straight win with a 48-9 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.

Patrick Mahomes threw two touchdown passes to lift the Chiefs (9-4) to another win at Arrowhead Stadium, improving to 6-2 at home in 2021.

It was a dominant performance for the AFC West leaders, who built a 35-0 lead in the first half before the Raiders got on the board with a field goal. The second half wasn't any better for the road team as the Chiefs closed out the season sweep over Las Vegas, outscoring the division rivals 89-23 in two games.

After major questions about Kansas City's defense earlier in the year, the unit has been on fire lately and forced five Raiders turnovers.

Las Vegas (6-7) continues its slide out of playoff contention with its fifth loss in its last six games. Derek Carr was limited to an 85.7 quarterback rating with tight end Darren Waller unavailable with knee and back injuries.

Notable Performances

Patrick Mahomes, QB, KC: 20-of-24, 258 passing yards, 2 TDs

Clyde Edwards-Helaire, RB, KC: 37 rushing yards, 2 TDs

Tyreek Hill, WR, KC: 4 catches, 76 receiving yards

Derek Carr, QB, LV: 33-of-45, 263 passing yards, 1 TD, 1 INT

Josh Jacobs, RB, LV: 24 rushing yards, 46 receiving yards

Hunter Renfrow, WR, LV: 13 catches, 117 receiving yards, 1 TD

Turnover-Prone Raiders Shut Down Offensively

The Raiders had a lot of energy entering the game, sending an apparent message by dancing on the midfield logo:

This backfired quickly.

The first play of the game was a disaster as a Josh Jacobs' fumble was returned for a Kansas City touchdown:

The impact plays continued for the Chiefs defense with five total turnovers.

Carr had little room to operate thanks to the consistent Chiefs pass rush.

Kansas City finished with four sacks and 11 quarterback hits.

Jacobs also couldn't get much going on the ground with just 2.7 yards per carry.

Hunter Renfrow was the only consistent producer for Las Vegas, catching 13 passes for 117 yards, more than double anyone else on the roster. He also added the team's only touchdown.

Even with his first-half fumble, the former Clemson star remains a reliable option with his third straight 100-yard game. He has been someone Carr can trust with Waller inactive.

Balanced Chiefs Offense Cruises to Victory

Mahomes has been at his best this season when throwing to his star pass-catchers Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce. In this game, the key to success was spreading the ball around.

Mahomes got a lot of players involved Sunday, completing passes to eight different players.

Darrel Williams and Josh Gordon were the ones who found the end zone in the first half.

Mecole Hardman and Byron Pringle also had long catches in the game.

The rushing attack was as good as we have seen in some time, with Clyde Edwards-Helaire scoring two touchdowns.

Derrick Gore joined the fun with a 51-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Hill and Kelce combined for seven catches but were hardly needed in the blowout victory.

The Chiefs offense has been inconsistent this year, scoring 22 or fewer points in five of the previous six games. Getting more players involved could be the key to unlocking the group's potential.

What's Next?

The Chiefs continue their run through the AFC West with a road game against the Los Angeles Chargers on Thursday night. The Raiders play on Saturday against the Cleveland Browns.

Brother of Chiefs CB L'Jarius Sneed Killed in Stabbing; Suspect Arrested in Louisiana

Tqarontarion Dcortez "TQ" Harrison, the brother of Kansas City Chiefs cornerback L'Jarius Sneed, was killed Friday night in Minden, Louisiana. He was 32.

Steve Cropper, chief of the Minden Police Department, told KTBS' Tiffany Flournoy that Minden resident Angela Washington, 47, was arrested and charged with second-degree homicide.

"TQ Harrison died from a single stab wound to his back that punctured his lung," Cropper said, adding the suspected murder weapon, a large kitchen knife, was recovered by police.

Rick Burkholder, the Chiefs' vice president of sports medicine and performance, posted condolences on Twitter:

Cropper said the stabbing occurred at Washington's house Friday night. Harrison attempted to drive himself to the hospital but crashed his car upon arriving to the medical facility. He died after doctors attempted emergency surgery.

Police didn't mention a potential motive for the stabbing.

Harrison, a Minden High School graduate, was "well-liked and almost always seen smiling" within the small city outside of Shreveport, per Flournoy.

In November, Sneed told Sam McDowell of the Kansas City Star he credited his two brothers, including TQ, for helping raise him because of family problems while he was growing up.

"What I'm still trying to understand is how the childhood trauma I went through is still messing with my head," Sneed said. "Because it's in there, man. I can feel it."

Harrison took on a fatherly role by changing diapers, cooking meals and walking his brothers to school.

"Man, yeah, it was hard," he told McDowell. "But what choice [did] I have?"

Sneed, 24, was a fourth-round pick of the Chiefs in the 2020 draft after playing college football at Louisiana Tech. He's appeared in 21 games across his first two NFL seasons.

The Chiefs added him to their injury report Saturday, listing him as questionable for personal reasons ahead of Sunday's home game against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Patrick Mahomes 'Definitely Frustrated' by His Play Despite Chiefs' Winning Streak

The Kansas City Chiefs might be riding a five-game winning streak, but star quarterback Patrick Mahomes doesn't feel he's playing up to his own expectations.

The 2018 NFL MVP said Monday on 610 Sports Radio's The Drive he's "definitely frustrated in the way that I'm playing":

I feel like I'm leaving just too much stuff out there on the field. I still feel like we're finding different ways to win, which is obviously good to have. Because when you're in December, and when you're in January, and hopefully February, you have to find every single way to win a football game. And I think we're doing that. So definitely, you're optimistic about how the whole entire team's playing, but as far as myself, I think I can play a lot better, which could help out the team even more.

When the Chiefs opened with three losses in their first five games, it looked like a porous defense was going to spoil their chances at a third straight Super Bowl appearance. They allowed an average of 437.4 yards per game during that stretch.

Now, Kansas City is winning thanks to an improved defense rather than an offense that's failing to hit its true ceiling.

Over his team's last five games, Mahomes has thrown for 1,291 yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions. His 258.2 yards per contest is significantly below his career average (302.3).

The 26-year-old appears to have picked a great time to have a down season relatively speaking.

At 8-4, the Chiefs are tied for the best record in the AFC and currently sit in the fourth seed. There isn't one standout team in the conference, so Mahomes performing at 80 percent of his usual level may not take them out of the title race.

If anything, Kansas City winning right now despite Mahomes playing somewhat poorly by his own admission might make the team an even stronger favorite. The franchise has the second-best Super Bowl moneyline (+650; bet $100 to win $650) at DraftKings Sportsbook, trailing only the defending champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+550).

Assuming the defense can remain this stifling, the Chiefs will be downright dominant if Mahomes regresses to the mean a little more between now and the playoffs.

The Kansas City Chiefs stayed hot coming out of their bye week, earning their fifth straight win by defeating the Denver Broncos 22-9 on Sunday night. Patrick Mahomes had 184 passing yards, an interception and a rushing touchdown as Kansas City improved to 8-4.

The Chiefs also kept another streak alive, as Sunday's victory marked the 12th straight time they took down the AFC West-rival Broncos.

Denver fell to 6-6 with the loss. Teddy Bridgewater led the Broncos with 257 passing yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. Rookie running back Javonte Williams had 178 scrimmage yards and a receiving touchdown.

Notable Stats

Patrick Mahomes, QB, KC: 15-of-29 for 184 YDS, INT; 4 CAR for 12 YDS, TD

Teddy Bridgewater, QB, DEN: 22-of-40 for 257 YDS, TD, 2 INT

Javonte Williams, RB, DEN: 23 CAR for 102 YDS; 6 REC for 76 YDS, TD

Chiefs Learning to Win in Different Ways

One thing has been clear about this season: This isn't the same Kansas City team we've all grown accustomed to in recent years. The Chiefs are no longer racking up 450 yards of offense and blowing out teams by 40 points. Instead, they've learned how to grind out games.

Sunday's game seemed like the perfect opportunity for the Kansas City offense to get back to its big-play ways. Denver played a single-high safety on defense for most of the game despite teams limiting the Chiefs this season by utilizing two deep safeties. Still, Kansas City was unable to take advantage.

The Chiefs went 72 yards on 12 plays on their opening drive, which was capped off by a 10-yard rush touchdown by Mahomes. They led going into halftime despite trailing the Broncos in most statistical categories.

Mahomes threw his 12th interception of the year on Kansas City's opening drive in the third quarter. He recovered on the next possession with a 38-yard pass to Darrel Williams, which was the Chiefs' longest play of the day. But the drive stalled, and the Chiefs settled for a field goal.

The story of the second half was the Chiefs defense, though, as they made timely plays to put an end to any of Denver's momentum.

Juan Thornhill picked off a pass by Bridgewater late in the third quarter, but the Chiefs offense went three-and-out on the subsequent possession. On the ensuing punt, Byron Pringle recovered a muff by Broncos returner Diontae Spencer at the Denver 16-yard line, but Kansas City once again settled for a field goal.

Daniel Sorensen then blew the game open with a 75-yard pick-six off of Bridgewater early in the fourth quarter.

While the weather in Kansas City may have been a factor in the struggles of both offenses, Mahomes finished with a season-low passer rating of just 57.2.

However, the Chiefs learning to win despite an off-night by Mahomes and the offense will be a lesson the team carries going forward as they attempt to make their third straight Super Bowl appearance.

Denver Doomed by Missed Opportunities

The Broncos had their chances to keep the game close, but it just wasn't their night. Denver's defense played well enough to give its offense some opportunities, but the team failed to convert time and time again.

Denver's biggest blunder on Sunday was its 20-play drive in the first half that resulted in in a turnover on downs.

In the second half, Denver forced the Chiefs to settle for field goals, but ill-timed turnovers on offense and special teams put an end to any momentum the team tried to build.

Bridgewater did break through with a short touchdown pass to Williams midway through the fourth quarter, but it was much too late with the game already out of reach.

Denver has been a better offense than it showed on Sunday, entering the game averaging 20.7 points. The Broncos will have to take advantage of their opponents' mistakes and put some points on the board if they hope to make a playoff push as the season winds down.

What's Next?

The Chiefs will welcome another AFC West foe to Arrowhead Stadium next Sunday when the Las Vegas Raiders come to town. The Broncos will look to bounce back that same day against the Detroit Lions.
