Patrick Mahomes Says Chiefs Won't Take Steelers 'Lightly at All' in 2022 NFL Playoffs

Even though Ben Roethlisberger doesn't think his team has a chance to win, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes isn't going to overlook the Pittsburgh Steelers in Sunday's AFC Wild Card Game.

Speaking to reporters about the matchup, Mahomes said the Chiefs aren't taking the Steelers "lightly at all" because of the talent they have on the roster and coaching staff:

They have a lot of really good coaches over there, they have a lot of really good players and they’ve played in playoff games. They understand how to change stuff up, they understand to go back to what they’re great at. So, we’re expecting a battle. We’ll be ready to go and we’re going to try to find answers for everything. They’re going to throw all different pitches to us, and we have to be able to respond and have success as much as possible.

Roethlisberger was joking on Wednesday when he commented that the Steelers "don't have a chance" against Kansas City.

"We're probably 20-point underdogs, and we're going to the No. 1 team—I know they're not the No. 1 seed, but they're the No. 1 team that's won the AFC the last two years, arguably the best team in football," he added.

It would be easy for Mahomes and the Chiefs to fall into the trap of overlooking their opponent. The Steelers are 12.5-point underdogs, per FanDuel Sportsbook

Frank Schwab of Yahoo Sports noted the Steelers are the biggest underdog in the history of the wild-card round by point spread.

According to Schwab, the previous record was 11 points for three different teams (2012 Minnesota Vikings, 2016 Miami Dolphins, 2020 Chicago Bears). None of the three 11-point underdogs were able to cover the spread. The closest margin of defeat was the 2020 Bears, who lost 21-9 to the New Orleans Saints.

Among the 14 playoff teams, Pittsburgh's offense ranked last during the regular season in yards per game (315.4) and points per game (20.2).

The Chiefs have had moments of inconsistency this season, but they won nine of their final 10 games to finish 12-5 overall. They have at least advanced to the AFC Championship Game in each of the previous three seasons.

Patrick Mahomes' Brother Jackson Target of Anti-Gay Slur from Fan Before Broncos Game

An NFL fan was caught on video yelling an anti-gay slur toward Patrick Mahomes' brother before the Kansas City Chiefs regular-season finale against the Denver Broncos on Saturday, per TMZ Sports

A fan in the stands at Empower Field was repeatedly yelling anti-gay slurs toward Jackson Mahomes, who was on the field taking photos before the start of Saturday's game. Patrick Mahomes' fiancee, Brittany Matthews, heard the fan and yelled back, "That's rude."

It's unclear if stadium security was called or if the fan faced any consequences for their actions.

This isn't the first time Jackson Mahomes has been subject to abuse as people frequently leave anti-gay slurs and comments on his TikTok videos.

The younger Mahomes made news in December after leaving a bad review of a local Kansas City restaurant because it would not accommodate his large party. The restaurant, SoT, then ripped into Mahomes in an Instagram post before apologizing.

Mahomes was also criticized for pouring a bottle of water on a Ravens fan after the Chiefs' loss to Baltimore on Sept. 19 and for doing a TikTok dance on the sideline memorial to late Washington Football Team safety Sean Taylor in October.

Patrick Mahomes said his brother was being yelled at by Ravens fans during that game, and his actions were the result of frustration. The younger Mahomes also apologized for dancing on Taylor's memorial.

Report: Chiefs 'Don't Believe' Tyreek Hill's Injury 'Is a Very, Very Large Issue'

Jan 10, 2022

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill was limited by a heel injury in his team's Week 18 game against the Denver Broncos, but the staff remains optimistic, according to James Palmer of NFL Network:

"They don't believe this is a very, very large issue for him," Palmer said.

Hill injured his heel pregame and was limited to just a handful of snaps in Saturday's regular-season finale. The Chiefs are now scheduled to open the playoffs with a home game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday night.

The 27-year-old remains a star when healthy, finishing the regular season with 111 catches for 1,239 yards and nine touchdowns in 17 games.

A Pro Bowl selection in each of his five seasons in the NFL, the West Alabama product is one of the most productive receivers in the league. He was primarily a return specialist as a rookie before transitioning to full-time receiver, posting back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons in his second and third years.

In 2020, Hill recorded 87 receptions for 1,276 yards and a career-high 15 touchdowns on his way to a third first-team All-Pro selection.

The Chiefs and quarterback Patrick Mahomes usually like to spread the ball around on offense, but they will miss Hill's production. His speed makes him a constant threat to opposing defenses and opens up opportunities for other players. Without him on the field, defenders will have a lot less to worry about.

Kansas City tight end Travis Kelce would likely see more targets if the injury keeps Hill out of the lineup. Mecole Hardman and Byron Pringle are the next top options at the receiver position.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid is one of the best offensive minds in football, so look for him to devise a game plan in which the team will be able to survive without Hill if needed.

Patrick Mahomes' Fiancee Brittany Matthews: Chiefs 'Got Screwed' by Refs vs. Bengals

Patrick Mahomes' fiancee Brittany Matthews vented her frustration with the officiating in the Kansas City Chiefs' 34-31 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.

Matthews tweeted the Chiefs "just basically got screwed."

Kansas City was penalized 10 times for 83 yards, compared to five penalties for 62 yards for Cincinnati.

Fans are likely to feel particularly aggrieved about a pair of flags on L'Jarius Sneed that helped Cincinnati prolong drives.

The first came on third down to open the fourth quarter, when an incomplete pass from Joe Burrow would've meant Cincinnati punting from its own 21-yard line. The possession ended with a five-yard touchdown pass from Burrow to Tyler Boyd.

On 4th-and-goal inside the final minute, Sneed was whistled for illegal hands to the face, thus giving the Bengals a fresh set of downs. That allowed the home team to run down the clock leading up to Evan McPherson's game-winning field goal.

The referees also appeared to miss a false start by Cincinnati on 3rd-and-inches with 2:10 left in the game.

As much as the Chiefs may point to the officiating, they were the architects of their own demise at Paul Brown Stadium.

The defense surrendered 475 yards to the Bengals, and defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo had no answer for Ja'Marr Chase. The rookie wide receiver caught 11 passes for 266 yards and three touchdowns.

Kansas City's offense, meanwhile, managed to put just three points on the board in the second half.

The Chiefs jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and had a 14-point cushion with 2:18 remaining in the first half. One would've expected them to hold onto that advantage with how well they've played in recent weeks.

Failing to see the win through could prove costly since the result allowed the Tennessee Titans to jump into the AFC's top seed.

Bengals' Joe Burrow Compared to 'Young Tom Brady' by Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo

Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo isn't making the mistake of downplaying Joe Burrow's talents.

Ahead of Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals, Spagnuolo told reporters that in Burrow he sees "a young Tom Brady."

Ahead of a Week 16 matchup against Cincinnati, Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Wink Martindale contrasted game-planning against Burrow and Aaron Rodgers. He said Rodgers was a future Hall of Famer, but that "I don't think we're ready to buy a gold jacket for Joe yet."

The second-year quarterback responded by throwing for 525 yards and four touchdowns in a 41-21 win. After the game, Burrow alluded to how Martindale gave him a little added motivation:

It was another outstanding performance from the 2019 Heisman Trophy winner, who has thrown for 4,165 yards and 30 touchdowns while completing 69.9 percent of his passes this season.

Whether intentional or not, Spagnuolo isn't making the same mistake as Martindale. By favorably comparing Burrow to the greatest of all time, maybe the 25-year-old becomes so flattered he can't bring himself to shred the Chiefs secondary.

The Bengals are a five-point underdog at DraftKings Sportsbook despite playing at home in Week 17. That says less about Cincinnati and more about Kansas City, which is riding an eight-game winning streak and looking like the best team in the NFL.

In 2003, the Bengals earned an upset over the previously unbeaten Chiefs, a result that symbolized a turning point for the franchise under head coach Marvin Lewis.

Taking down Kansas City this time around could have the same effect because the future is once again bright in Southwest Ohio with Burrow at the helm.

Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes, Packers' Aaron Rodgers Headline NFL's Players of the Month

A pair of NFL MVP award winners in Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers were selected as the NFL Offensive Players of the Month for December in their respective conferences.

With Mahomes at the helm, the Kansas City Chiefs went a perfect 4-0 in December and catapulted themselves into first place in the AFC. In those four games, Mahomes completed 68.5 percent of his passes for 1,110 yards, eight touchdowns and two interceptions, and he also rushed for a score.

Rodgers started and won all three games he played in during the month of December, completing 74.5 percent of his passing attempts for 811 yards with 10 touchdowns and no picks. His performance also helped Green Bay move into the No. 1 overall seed in the NFC.

Of course, this is nothing new for Mahomes and Rodgers, two of the NFL's best and most accomplished quarterbacks.

In three seasons as a starter entering 2021, Mahomes won an MVP award and reached two Super Bowls, winning one. Meanwhile, Rodgers is a one-time Super Bowl winner and three-time MVP, most recently winning the award last season.

With no clear and obvious choice for MVP this season, Mahomes and Rodgers are both undoubtedly in the mix along with Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor, Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady, Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp and Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen.

The NFL also named the Defensive Players of the Month for December, with Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald taking NFC honors and Miami Dolphins linebacker Jerome Baker winning the award in the AFC.

Donald, a three-time Defensive Player of the Year, dominated during a 4-0 run by the Rams, registering 21 tackles, eight tackles for loss, six sacks and two forced fumbles.

Winning awards is old hat for Donald, but Baker is a first-time winner of the Defensive Player of the Month after racking up 12 tackles, six tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks in three games, all of which were Miami victories.

Two of the NFL's most outstanding rookies were recognized as well, with Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons getting named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Month and Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown winning the offensive award.

Parsons, a virtual lock to win Defensive Rookie of the Year and a strong contender for Defensive Player of the Year, had 12 tackles, four sacks, three tackles for loss and a forced fumble in December.

Meanwhile, St. Brown shook off a slow start to his rookie campaign, as the fourth-round pick piled up 35 receptions for 340 yards and three touchdowns during a month in which the Lions won their first two games of the season.

Cincinnati Bengals rookie kicker Evan McPherson was named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Month, and Atlanta Falcons veteran punter Thomas Morstead took home NFC Special Teams Player of the Month honors.

Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs Rout Ben Roethlisberger, Steelers to Clinch 2022 Playoff Spot

The Kansas City Chiefs clinched the AFC West title and a spot in the postseason with a 36-10 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday. The Chiefs own the best record in the AFC at 11-4.

The Chiefs have now won the AFC West in six consecutive seasons and have had a winning record in each of Andy Reid's nine seasons as head coach.

Sunday marked their eighth straight victory after beginning the year 3-4. It was an impressive win for the Chiefs, who were without several players, including star tight end Travis Kelce and kicker Harrison Butker, because of COVID-19 health and safety protocols.

Notable Stats

Patrick Mahomes, QB, KC: 23/30 for 258 YDS, 3 TD

Ben Roethlisberger, QB, PIT: 23/35 for 159 YDS, 1 TD, 1 INT

Byron Pringle, WR, KC: 6 REC for 75 YDS, 2 TD

Najee Harris, RB, PIT: 19 CAR for 93 YDS

Darrel Williams, RB, KC: 11 CAR for 55 YDS and 3 REC for 30 YDS

Diontae Johnson, WR, PIT: 6 REC for 51 YDS, 1 TD

Patrick Mahomes Dominates Without Travis Kelce

Mahomes and the Kansas City offense have struggled at times this season. That was not the case on Sunday against the Steelers, and it really hasn't been the case for weeks.

Even without Kelce, Mahomes had one of his best games of the season, completing 23 of 30 passes for 258 yards and three touchdowns.

Sunday's game marked Mahomes' second consecutive contest with three passing touchdowns. It was also Kansas City's third-largest margin of victory this year.

The Chiefs entered Sunday's game with the second-best passing offense in the NFL, averaging 287.4 yards per game. Much of that success can be attributed to Mahomes. His two top targets (Tyreek Hill and Kelce) have more than 1,000 yards each this season. Mecole Hardman has the third-most receiving yards, entering Sunday's game with 47 catches for 506 yards and one touchdown.

With Kelce sidelined, Mahomes did a tremendous job of spreading the wealth among his receivers. While Hill, who was recently removed from the COVID-19 list, finished with two catches for 19 yards, the Chiefs had four receivers with at least 30 yards.

  • Byron Pringle: 6 REC for 75 YDS, 2 TD
  • Derrick Gore: 3 REC for 61 YDS
  • Mecole Hardman: 3 REC for 31 YDS, 1 TD
  • Darrel Williams: 3 REC for 30 YDS

In addition, the Chiefs did a great job of running the ball. Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who suffered a collarbone injury, Williams, Gore and Michael Burton combined for 127 yards on 33 carries. For comparison, the Kansas City offense entered having rushed for just 109.9 yards per game

If anything, Sunday's game showed us that Mahomes can be successful with just about any receiver the Chiefs have rostered, which is a scary thought with the postseason approaching and Kelce primed to return next week against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Ben Roethlisberger Underwhelming for Second Straight Game

Sunday's game was one of the worst of the season for Roethlisberger and the Steelers' offense. The veteran completed 23 of 35 passes for just 159 yards and one touchdown against one interception.

The offensive struggles have become too common for Pittsburgh this season. While the offense entered having averaged 232.9 passing yards per game, this was the second straight week Roethlisberger was held to under 200 yards.

Before Week 15, Roethlisberger had passed for a touchdown in every game.

Roethlisberger had a particularly rough night in the turnover department. First, he threw a costly interception on Pittsburgh's second drive. Mahomes and the KC offense turned it into a touchdown to go up 14-0 in the first quarter.

Roethlisberger had another costly play in the fourth quarter as he was sacked and fumbled for his second turnover of the game.

For comparison, the Kansas City offense finished with 25 first downs, while Pittsburgh finished with 20. The Steelers also went just 5 for 13 on third downs and averaged 4.3 yards per play.

This is an unfortunate time for Roethlisberger and the Steelers' offense to have a complete meltdown as teams are making their final push for the playoffs. With Sunday's loss, Pittsburgh has just a 14 percent chance to make the postseason.

It's also disappointing when you think that this could be Roethlisberger's final season with the Steelers or in the NFL. He has been relatively quiet about his future, but at 39, the clock is ticking on Big Ben's career.

It's unfortunate he and the Steelers couldn't do more, but the AFC North has been the most competitive it's been in years with the Cincinnati Bengals (9-6), Baltimore Ravens (8-7) and Cleveland Browns (7-8) all in a tight battle.

What's Next?

The Chiefs will travel to face the Cincinnati Bengals on Jan. 2, while the Steelers will host the Cleveland Browns on Jan. 3.

Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs Clinch 6th Straight AFC West Title with Win over Steelers

The Kansas City Chiefs are AFC West champions for the sixth consecutive year.

Kansas City clinched the division title Sunday with a blowout 36-10 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Actually clinching the division felt like something of a long shot coming into the Sunday schedule, considering the Chiefs also needed the Houston Texans to defeat the Los Angeles Chargers. Nonetheless, that upset happened in the early slate.

Houston had four scoring drives in the fourth quarter, three of which were touchdowns, to stun the Chargers 41-29.

That set the stage for Patrick Mahomes and Co. to secure a division title with a win over the Steelers, and they wasted no time seizing control on both sides of the ball.

Kansas City scored touchdowns on three of its first four possessions to jump out to a 23-0 halftime lead. Mahomes threw touchdowns to Byron Pringle and Mecole Hardman, while Clyde Edwards-Helaire added another score on the ground to all but put the game away before intermission.

The second half was largely a formality, and Mahomes finished the game completing 23 of 30 passes for 258 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions.

It wasn't just the offense that played well, as the defense shut down Ben Roethlisberger and the rest of the Steelers when the game was still hanging in the balance.

That the Chiefs are division champions with a loaded roster that features Mahomes, Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce and more isn't surprising. However, the path they took surely wasn't what they envisioned coming into the season.

The two-time defending AFC champions started 3-4, and it was fair to wonder if the recent stretch of dominance was coming to an end when they lost 27-3 to the Tennessee Titans in Week 7.

All they have done since is win eight games in a row to not only win the AFC West but also position themselves atop the conference in the race for the AFC's only first-round bye and home-field advantage until the Super Bowl.

While the Titans, Cincinnati Bengals, Buffalo Bills, Indianapolis Colts and New England Patriots could pose as threats to the Chiefs, it is difficult to imagine anyone else being seen as the favorite in the AFC should Kansas City secure home-field advantage and continue playing at such an elevated level.

Chiefs' Tyrann Mathieu Diagnosed with Quad Contusion After Injury vs. Steelers

Kansas City Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu suffered a left quad contusion during Sunday's 36-10 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers, head coach Andy Reid told reporters.

Mathieu exited the game during the second half and was ruled out as Kansas City held a commanding 33-3 lead.

The veteran safety was an All-Pro for the second time in 2020. With free agency looming in the offseason, he had a strong incentive to put together another standout season in 2021.

Through 13 games, Mathieu isn't quite reaching the same heights he did one year ago. He has 65 total tackles, six pass breakups and three interceptions, including a pick-six in Kansas City's Week 2 loss to the Baltimore Ravens:

Following a brutal start, the Chiefs defense has leveled off a bit. The unit is allowing 366.4 yards per game, 25th in the NFL. Considering Kansas City surrendered 400-plus yards in four of its first five games, its current position represents an improvement.

But losing Mathieu is a setback the two-time reigning AFC champions don't need as they've righted the ship following a 2-3 start and control their destiny for home-field advantage in the playoffs. There isn't another player in their secondary who can fill all of the duties he serves in a given game.

Report: Chiefs' Clyde Edwards-Helaire 'Should Return Shortly' After Collarbone Injury

Dec 26, 2021

Kansas City Chiefs running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire avoided a season-ending collarbone injury and "should return shortly," according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Adam Schefter of ESPN also reported Edwards-Helaire is "week-to-week," and he noted "it will be challenging" for the running back to play Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Rapoport noted Edwards-Helaire did not suffer structural damage but does have swelling after exiting Sunday's 36-10 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

He finished the day with nine carries for 27 yards and a touchdown, adding one reception for four yards.

A first-round draft pick (No. 32 overall) by the Chiefs in 2020, Edwards-Helaire hasn't made the impact that was expected given his lofty status. He had a solid rookie season with 1,100 yards from scrimmage and five total touchdowns in 13 games.

The LSU product had his best stretch this season in Weeks 3-4 when he posted back-to-back 100-yard rushing games and had a receiving touchdown in both contests.

Just as he was building momentum, though, Edwards-Helaire suffered a knee injury in the Chiefs' Week 5 loss to the Buffalo Bills and landed on injured reserve. He missed five games before being activated prior to Week 11 against the Dallas Cowboys.

He entered Sunday with 615 scrimmage yards and five total touchdowns.

Until Edwards-Helaire can return, look for Darrel Williams to step in as Kansas City's No. 1 running back and Derrick Gore to see an uptick in utilization.
