Tyrann Mathieu remains without an NFL team. His former team, the Kansas City Chiefs, have already moved on by signing Justin Reid.

Mathieu, who was considered one of the top free agents in the 2022 class, said he doesn't understand the decision.

“Bro, I was depressed,” Mathieu told Sam McDowell of the Kansas City Star. “Heartbroken. Heart. Broken. “I could not understand it. I could not, man.”

The four-time All-Pro said he would have accepted the three-year, $31.5 million contract the Chiefs gave to Reid and that it was essentially the team's decision to move on.

Mathieu spent the last three seasons in Kansas City, earning a pair of Pro Bowl and All-Pro nods while helping lead the team to a Super Bowl LIV championship.

"It was the hardest year of my career," Mathieu said of last season. "I've been through ACLs [surgeries]. I've been through a lot of stuff in this league—having to move my family every two or three years. But that was one of the hardest, longest years of my life.

"I just knew. Everything I was working for, man. Every day I wake up trying to make the Chiefs better, trying to make the community better. I'm just working toward that knowing that there's an end date. There’s an expiration date to that."

Mathieu has played for the Arizona Cardinals, Houston Texans and Chiefs over the course of his nine-year NFL career. He said he was lost at the fact he'll be playing for his fourth NFL team despite his production.

Veteran defensive back Tyrann Mathieu is one of the best free agents yet to be signed, and his market is reportedly picking up steam.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Thursday that Mathieu had a virtual meeting with the Philadelphia Eagles. Prior to that, he met with the New Orleans Saints earlier this week. Rapoport called Philadelphia a "prime location" for the star safety.

Rapoport also reported that Mathieu is in "no rush" to find a deal and "wants to hold out for the right money and wants to hold out for the right team." Mike Garafolo added that Mathieu had a "good visit" with the Saints.

Rapoport went on to say that the Saints and Eagles both "make a lot of sense" for the veteran at this stage of his career, and he also noted that the Los Angeles Rams could be a good fit as well. But he maintained that Mathieu is more focused on getting into good shape instead of securing a new contract.

New Orleans has an opening to fill in its secondary after losing promising young safety Marcus Williams, who signed with the Baltimore Ravens this offseason.

Mathieu is coming off another strong campaign with the Kansas City Chiefs. The 29-year-old recorded 76 tackles, six passes defended, three interceptions, three fumble recoveries and a sack to earn his third career selection to the Pro Bowl.

A three-time first-team All-Pro, Mathieu was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in the third round in 2013. He played five seasons for the Cardinals before spending a year with the Houston Texans and then joining the Chiefs in 2019. Mathieu was a part of Kansas City's Super Bowl LIV victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Chiefs' Tyreek Hill Traded to Dolphins for 5 Draft Picks, Including 2022 1st-Rounder

The Kansas City Chiefs traded wide receiver Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins for a package of draft picks on Wednesday,

Kansas City will receive a first-round pick, a second-round pick and a fourth-round pick in 2022 and a fourth-round pick and a sixth-round pick in 2023.

ESPN's Adam Schefter, who first reported details of the deal, noted the Chiefs also had a deal with the New York Jets in place:

Schefter also relayed, per agent Drew Rosenhaus, that Hill agreed to a new four-year, $120 million extension with the Dolphins, making him the highest-paid wideout in the NFL, as measured by average annual value. Davante Adams had reset the market with his five-year, $140 million deal from the Las Vegas Raiders ($28 million per season).

On the field, the 28-year-old has been one of the most dynamic playmakers in football. In 2019 he was a major part of Kansas City's Super Bowl-winning team, catching 58 passes for 860 yards and seven touchdowns in 12 games.

He was also excellent in the postseason, notching 17 receptions for 213 yards and two scores.

He reprised his success in 2020, catching 87 passes for 1,276 yards and 15 touchdowns, adding two rushing scores to his impressive tally. The Chiefs returned to the Super Bowl, though Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers ruined their repeat hopes.

And in 2021, he caught 111 passes for 1,239 yards and nine scores.

Combined with Travis Kelce, Hill helped give 2018 NFL MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes a pair of incredible weapons in the passing game.

He will offer the Dolphins a field-stretching threat and an elusive player with the ball in his hands who regularly breaks off big scoring plays. There's no question he's a dynamic playmaker on the field and one who could transform Miami's offense.

Off the field, though, he was investigated in March 2019 by Overland Park police for potential child abuse, including an instance when his three-year-old son reportedly suffered a broken arm.

Audio was also publicly released of a man who was reportedly Hill telling his fiancee, Crystal Espinal, that, "You need to be terrified of me too, b---h" after she said on the tape that Hill's son was terrified of him.

He was not charged by authorities, however, and the NFL did not suspend him.

Additionally, in Aug. 2015, Hill pleaded guilty to domestic assault and battery by strangulation of Espinal and served three years probation. The conviction was later dismissed and expunged from his record as a part of his plea agreement.

The Chiefs had banned Hill from all team-related activities in the 2019 offseason while the NFL investigated him, though he returned to the club after the league didn't suspend him, saying it did not find conclusive evidence he violated the personal conduct policy, and he was an important part of the team over the past three seasons.

Tyreek Hill Rumors: Chiefs Trade WR to Dolphins in Exchange for 5 Draft Picks

The Kansas City Chiefs traded Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins on Wednesday in exchange for five draft picks, including a first-rounder in 2022.

As part of the agreement, Hill received a new four-year, $120 million contract that includes $72.2 million guaranteed, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport previously reported Hill and the Chiefs were "deep in talks" over a contract extension that would pay the receiver over $20 million per year.

Seven NFL receivers currently average $20 million per season, per Spotrac. Davante Adams briefly held the lead with his $28 million average annual salary after signing a new deal with the Las Vegas Raiders, but Hill is now the highest-paid at the position with an AAV of $30 million.

According to Charles Robinson of Yahoo Sports, the Chiefs began considering a trade after Adams reset the market with his extension.

Hill has been among the league's best skill-position players since entering the NFL, earning Pro Bowl selections either at receiver or returner in each of his six seasons. He also has three first-team All-Pro honors in this time.

The 28-year-old finished last season with 1,239 receiving yards and nine touchdowns while ranking third in the NFL with 111 catches. He had 15 touchdowns in 2020, second-most in football, while adding 87 receptions for 1,276 yards.

The superstar has been a major reason the Chiefs have ranked no worse than sixth in points scored in any of the past five years. The squad also has one Super Bowl title and two AFC Championships in that stretch.

Trading Hill leaves a significant hole in the offense, especially after losing Demarcus Robinson and Byron Pringle to free agency this offseason. Mecole Hardman would be the only returning receiver who accrued more than 100 yards last season.

The Chiefs did sign JuJu Smith-Schuster to a one-year deal and arguably have the top tight end in the NFL in Travis Kelce, but the passing attack could take a significant hit without Hill.

Meanwhile, the Dolphins have made a move to help out their young quarterback by adding one of the top playmakers in the league. Tua Tagovailoa should immediately benefit with the addition of an elite deep threat who is known to produce big numbers after the catch.

Chiefs Rumors: OT Orlando Brown to Receive Franchise Tag Ahead of Deadline

Pro Bowl offensive tackle Orlando Brown has been given the franchise tag by the Kansas City Chiefs.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Chiefs elected to use their one-year, $16.5 million tender on the 25-year-old after the two sides were unable to agree to a long-term deal before the start of free agency.

Brown and the Chiefs can continue to negotiate a multiyear extension, but this move ensures that the team doesn't have to worry about losing him as an unrestricted free agent.

After playing sparingly through the first six games of his rookie season with the Baltimore Ravens, the Oklahoma product moved into the starting lineup in Week 7 and never looked back. He has since started 58 out of 59 regular-season games.

Brown originally played right tackle for the Ravens, but he moved to left tackle in 2020 after Ronnie Stanley suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 8.

He explained at the time why he preferred to play on the left side of the offensive line.

“Growing up in my household, if you were going to play O-line, my dad didn’t want you being on the right side,” Brown told Daniel Oyefusi of the Baltimore Sun. "It was one of those deals where he felt as though the right tackle—and especially at the time when he played—he felt the right tackle was not considered the best tackle on the offensive line and in the offensive line room."

Brown is the son of the late former Cleveland Browns and Ravens left tackle Orlando Brown Sr.

Since the Ravens had Stanley entrenched on the left side, they dealt Brown to the Chiefs in 2021 along with two draft picks in exchange for four draft picks, including Kansas City's first-rounder in 2021 (No. 31 overall).

Brown started 16 of 17 games for the Chiefs in the regular season and was named to the Pro Bowl for the third consecutive season.

Based on the price Kansas City paid to get him from the Ravens, it seemed unlikely he would leave as a free agent.

It's rare for a high-caliber left tackle to hit the open market at his age. Brown will still be pursuing a long-term deal, but he'll be guaranteed a lot of money for next season after signing the franchise tender.

Former Bears HC Matt Nagy Agrees to Contract as Chiefs' Senior Assistant, QBs Coach

One month after being fired by the Chicago Bears, Matt Nagy is returning to the Kansas City Chiefs as an assistant on Andy Reid's coaching staff.

The Chiefs announced Friday they have hired Nagy as a senior assistant and quarterbacks coach for the 2022 season.

Mike Kafka, who had been the Chiefs quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator for the past two seasons, was named New York Giants offensive coordinator Feb. 11.

Per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero and Jeffri Chadiha, Eric Bieniemy is signing a one-year deal to return as Kansas City's offensive coordinator next season.

The Bears announced the firings of Nagy and general manager Ryan Pace after the team finished 6-11 in 2021.

Nagy went 34-31 with two playoff appearances in four seasons as Bears head coach. He led them to an NFC North title in 2018, but they lost 16-15 to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild Card Round.

Prior to being hired by the Bears, Nagy began his coaching career with Reid when he spent two seasons as an intern with the Eagles in 2008 and 2009. He spent the 2010 season as a coaches' assistant before being named offensive quality control coach.

After Reid signed on to become Kansas City's head coach in 2013, Nagy joined his staff as quarterbacks coach. The 43-year-old spent three seasons in that role before being promoted to offensive coordinator when Doug Pederson was hired as Eagles head coach.

Alex Smith set career highs in passing yards (4,045), completions (341), passing touchdowns (26) and quarterback rating (104.1) working with Nagy during the 2017 season.

NFL Rumors: Eric Bieniemy to Return as Chiefs OC After Head Coach Interviews

Eric Bieniemy is reportedly expected to return as Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator in 2022.

Matt Verderame of Fansided reported the Chiefs are anticipating Bieniemy will be back after interviewing for several head coaching vacancies. Adam Schefter of ESPN confirmed Bieniemy will return to the Chiefs.

Bieniemy's contract expired after the 2021 season, so the two sides will need to reach a new deal for him to officially return.

The 2022 season would be Bieniemy's 10th working under Andy Reid in Kansas City. He began as a running backs coach in 2013 before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2018, a move that coincided with Patrick Mahomes' ascent.

Kansas City has hosted a record four straight AFC Championship Games, with the Chiefs offense ranking as the most explosive in football for most of that time period.

Bieniemy seemed like a lock to become the latest Reid protege to find himself leading a team of his own. Eleven Reid assistants have gone on to be NFL head coaches, including Bieniemy's two predecessors as Chiefs offensive coordinator (Doug Pederson and Matt Nagy). It's unclear why Bieniemy is yet to receive a chance at a head-coaching position—especially given he's had more success as a coordinator than either Pederson or Nagy.

Bieniemy's name is prominently featured in a racial discrimination lawsuit filed against the NFL by former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores. The suit cites Bieniemy's continued failure to land a top job as an example of the racial bias that exists within the NFL.

The Kansas City Chiefs came up short of winning a second Super Bowl title in three seasons in 2021, falling to the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Championship Game. However, the Chiefs are still well positioned to be a contender again in 2022...

Report: Patrick Mahomes Didn't Ban Brother, Fiancee from Chiefs Games Despite Rumor

Despite a rumor to the contrary, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes reportedly has not asked his fiancee and brother to refrain from attending games next season.

On Friday, former NFL offensive lineman and Xtra 1360 host Rich Ohrnberger said a source told him Mahomes sat down with his fiancee, Brittany Matthews, and brother, Jackson Mahomes, and asked both of them not to go to Chiefs games during the 2022 campaign.

Ohrnberger added that Mahomes felt his fiancee and brother had become a distraction and were "bad for his brand."

TMZ Sports followed up by reporting that sources said no such conversation took place and that Mahomes "can't wait" to have Brittany and Jackson cheering for him again next season at Arrowhead Stadium.

Mahomes later tweeted his feelings on the rumors:

Given that they are so closely linked to a player who has won a Super Bowl and an NFL MVP award in a career spanning just five seasons, Brittany and Jackson have become well known in their own right.

Jackson's TikTok account has 1 million followers, and Brittany can often be seen in videos doing dances with him.

They also haven't been shy about recording TikTok videos and loudly cheering on Patrick at Arrowhead on game days, which has made them a somewhat divisive topic of conversation among Chiefs fans.

Regardless of how fans feel about Brittany and Jackson, TMZ Sports' report  and Mahomes' tweet suggests Patrick is more than happy to have their support and is in favor of them being in attendance again next season when the Chiefs attempt to bounce back from an AFC Championship Game loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.
