Melvin Gordon III Signs Chiefs Practice-Squad Contract After Broncos Exit

Running back Melvin Gordon III is remaining in the AFC West.

Gordon told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler that he will be signing with the Kansas City Chiefs after being waived by the Denver Broncos earlier this month. Gordon told Mike Klis of 9News that he will be joining the practice squad.

The University of Wisconsin product is expected to be on the active roster "soon" ahead of the season's "stretch run," per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

Gordon appeared in 10 games for the Broncos this season, tallying 90 carries for 318 yards and two touchdowns to go with 25 catches for 223 yards.

He figured to be the primary back after Javonte Williams suffered a season-ending ACL injury in Week 4, but he posted single-digit carries in five of his last seven games and lost some time to Latavius Murray.

The biggest problem for Gordon was ball security. He fumbled five times this season, one of which came at the goal line in the season opener against the Seattle Seahawks and another of which was returned for a touchdown in a Week 4 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders.

Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett told reporters Gordon's most recent fumble was "unacceptable" before the team released him.

At his best, the 29-year-old was a Pro Bowler in 2016 and 2018 when he played for the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers. He also ran for a career-high 1,105 yards in 2017 for the Chargers and has proved capable of picking up yardage between the tackles and beating defenders with speed in the open field.

The Chiefs likely won't task Gordon with too much offensive responsibility. He told Mike Klis of 9 News the team made "no promises" he would be a part of the active roster.

Yet with Clyde Edwards-Helaire on injured reserve because of a high ankle sprain, Gordon could work his way into the running back rotation with rookie Isiah Pacheco and Jerick McKinnon. He should be able to take advantage of the additional space that quarterback Patrick Mahomes creates because opposing defenses are so worried about stopping the pass.

B/R Interview: Tony Gonzalez Talks Tom Brady, Travis Kelce and Fantasy Football Movie

"Man, I would love to play in this day and age."

And fans would love to see it, Tony Gonzalez.

The Hall of Fame tight end has gotten the opportunity to see a number of games up close this season for his work on Amazon's coverage of Thursday Night Football, and he told Bleacher Report he has caught himself thinking about what would happen if the prime version of himself was taking advantage of the spacing and aerial attacks in today's game.

"It all depends on the system you're in and who you're playing with," he said. "But, yeah, you look at it and the rules with the way they've changed them, this ain't your daddy's football. And I'm not saying it's a bad thing because they're making the game safer. But defenses can't really touch you anymore, they can't really hit you over the middle like they used to. So you look at it and go, 'Man, I would love to play in this day and age.'"

It's not difficult to envision the types of numbers he would post.

After all, Gonzalez is one of the best tight ends in NFL history who built a resume that included 14 Pro Bowl selections and six All-Pro nods after the Kansas City Chiefs selected him with the No. 13 overall pick of the 1997 NFL draft.

He played 12 seasons with the Chiefs and five with the Atlanta Falcons, amassing 1,325 receptions for 15,127 yards and 111 touchdowns. He missed a single game during his entire career, finished with 900 or more receiving yards nine different times, reached double-digit touchdown catches three different times and was inducted into the Hall of Fame as part of the class of 2019.

Kansas City fans have been spoiled at the position going from an all-time great in Gonzalez to a current star on his way to legendary status in Travis Kelce, who is a Super Bowl champion, seven-time Pro Bowler and three-time All-Pro attempting to surpass 1,000 receiving yards for the seventh straight year.

"I love watching Travis Kelce," Gonzalez said. "Obviously, it's Kansas City and hits close to home there. But to see what he's done in that system and with Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid calling the plays, and the way he's done it both on and off the field as a class act. He's definitely the guy who I watch the most and somebody I think has done unbelievable things with the position."

He also mentioned George Kittle and Kyle Pitts when asked which tight ends he enjoys watching but was quick to point out it's not a bad thing that nobody reminds him of himself.

"Everybody's so different," he said. "There's nobody who reminds me of me, and that's a good thing. Because these guys are coming in and they are their own person with their own style. And that's all I ever wanted. Don't ever try to be like me, be yourself and let's see you try to bring something new to the table."

Gonzalez has brought something new to the table in his post-playing career by going into acting.

His credits include NCIS and xXx: Return of Xander Cage, and he is part of the cast of the new Paramount+ movie called Fantasy Football debuting on Nov. 25. The former Falcon will play the team's coach in the film, which also stars Marsai Martin, Omari Hardwick and Kelly Rowland.

"I think I've come a long way from where I started," he said while laughing and discussing his acting abilities. "I've worked really hard to develop those skills, and I like where I'm at right now. It was great to be in the movie โ€ฆ I'm happy with it, I had a great experience."

Fantasy Football sees Callie A. Coleman (played by Martin) discover she can control her father Bobby (played by Hardwick) on the football field by playing as him in Madden NFL 23.

"It's a family movie that's based around football, which are the two best things in my life," Gonzalez said. "It's family and football, so this movie has it all. It's going to be funny and heartwarming and entertaining."

Madden plays a major role in the movie's plot, and the iconic EA Sports franchise is running a cross-promotion in which two of the characters (Bobby Coleman and Anderson Fisher) will be dropped into The Yard and Superstar KO modes on Friday.

Gonzalez, who is in the game in the Ultimate Team mode, reflected on his experience with the video game beyond its role in the film.

"I was a big player back in my younger days, but, of course, once you start getting married and having kids you have to be home after practice and can't stay and play," he said. "But now I have a 12-year-old son who is infatuated with the game. I'm not kidding you, I think he knows more about the players than I do. I can go to him now and ask about the players around the league and ask 'How do you know all this stuff?' And he goes, 'Madden. It's because I play Madden.'"

Don't expect to see Gonzalez on the sidelines as a coach anytime soon, though, even if he is playing one in Fantasy Football and former players may have their chance to shine in the profession thanks to the Indianapolis Colts.

"Now that this guy named Jeff Saturday got the head spot with the Colts, maybe I can make a go at it," he said. "But, honestly, I doubt it. I think coaching is so hard. It's such a chore. It's not my cup of tea, I don't think. But I do think Jeff Saturday's doing a good job of it, so maybe one day. I'll never say never."

Gonzalez said the situation with Saturday is "fascinating" and one of the storylines he can't wait to see unfold down the stretch run of the season.

While Saturday was a six-time Pro Bowler during 13 seasons with Indianapolis as a center, he didn't have any coaching experience at the college or NFL level when the Colts named him the replacement for the fired Frank Reich.

"This could be a game-changer hiring somebody with no experience," Gonzalez said of the new coach, who led Indianapolis to a victory over the Las Vegas Raiders in his first game. "If he can make this thing work, it changes the game. It really does. And a lot of coaches out there are probably shaking in their boots, there's a lot of people rooting against this. I can't wait to see how that turns out."

The Hall of Famer will have a chance to see how it turns out from a different perspective than most considering he is part of Amazon Prime Video's first year of covering Thursday Night Football.

Gonzalez, who previously worked on pregame shows for CBS and Fox, travels to stadiums alongside Charissa Thompson, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Andrew Whitworth and Richard Sherman for pregame, postgame and halftime coverage.

"It's been great," he said. "We're at the game with the set and the fans. Just being on the sideline, the energy is incredible. It's been way better than I thought it was going to be, and obviously with the streaming platform and to get a chance to do something that's never been done before and see it working now. It's no longer 'what if?'"

One of the Thursday games he got to see was the Baltimore Ravens' victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 8.

That was part of Tampa Bay's 3-5 start to the season, but it has since won two straight and is sitting atop the NFC South during its bye week. This may be Tom Brady's final season, and Gonzalez sees the seven-time Super Bowl champion's final push as another intriguing storyline for the season's second half.

"It seems like he's going to hit his stride here in what's going to be his last year," he said. "I am 100 percent sure this is going to be his last year, so watching him go out, I can't wait to see how that turns out."

It may even end in another Super Bowl appearance.

"The NFC, I don't know at this point," Gonzalez said. "I like Philly, but they can't stop the run. I'm still not convinced that Tom Brady doesn't have something up his sleeve as a true darkhorse. Never go against a Hall of Famer, especially a guy like that. And then the Cowboys, even though they lost last week, I think this is the best Cowboys team I've ever seen in my career."

He is far more certain of how the AFC will unfold, especially after his former team landed wide receiver Kadarius Toney in a trade with the New York Giants. All the pass-catcher did was score a touchdown in his second game with his new team during a win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

"Out of the AFC, I think the Chiefs," Gonzalez said. "That high-powered offense even got better. Kadarius Toney is only going to make that offense even better."

With predictions like that, Kansas City fans will surely continue to love one of the team's all-time greats.

Travis Kelce on Giants Trading Kadarius Toney to Chiefs: 'I Don't Get It One Bit'

Nov 17, 2022

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce isn't sure why the New York Giants were willing to trade wide receiver Kadarius Toney, but he's happy general manager Brett Veach stepped up to get a deal done.

Kelce discussed Toney, who made his first touchdown catch with K.C. during Sunday's win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, on Wednesday's episode of the New Heights podcast (h/t Brian Wacker of the New York Post).

"I don't know how he got out of that building," Kelce said. "I don't get it one bit...I don't even want to know what happened over there. I am just extremely happy that Brett Veach found a way yet again to get an unbelievably talented player in this building."

The Giants invested a first-round pick in the 2021 draft on Toney, who'd earned First Team All-SEC honors during his final college season at the University of Florida.

He failed to make an impact in New York, playing in just 12 of a possible 24 games because of injuries and recording a modest 41 catches for 420 yards and no touchdowns when on the field.

Toney had been sidelined since mid-September because of a hamstring injury when the trade occurred in late October, but he hinted at some behind-the-scenes drama in a Twitter post that was later deleted.

"That joke would've been funny if I was actually hurt still lol...Irrelevant people don't get updates," Toney wrote.

Regardless of the reason for his limited involvement in New York, the Chiefs capitalized on the situation to acquire a potential high-impact target for their offense.

Kelce explained there's been no red flags since the 23-year-old Alabama native arrived.

"When you get a trade like that, you think there's something you have to weigh out," Kelce said. "Ever since he's been in the building it's, man this dude's smart, man this dude's crazy athletic, man this guy has a lot of confidence. When you have a lot of confidence, that means you understand what's going on out there. You're seeing things, you know how to attack it. That goes back to being a smart player and a smart person. He's been a great teammate."

Toney getting up to full speed within the Chiefs' offense may be coming at a perfect time.

JuJu Smith-Schuster (concussion), Marquez Valdes-Scantling (illness) and Mecole Hardman (abdomen/illness) all missed practice Wednesday, leaving K.C. thin on receivers.

It's too early to know their statuses for Sunday's clash with the Los Angeles Chargers, but it's not out of the realm of possibility Toney operates as the team's No. 1 receiver this weekend.

Kelce's comments make it sound like the Chiefs' new arrival would be up to the challenge.

JuJu Smith-Schuster Ruled out for Chiefs vs. Jaguars After Suffering Concussion

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster was ruled out for the remainder of Sunday's matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars after suffering a concussion, according to the team.

Smith-Schuster appeared in just five regular-season games for the Pittsburgh Steelers during the 2021 season, catching 15 passes for 129 yards before undergoing what was considered season-ending shoulder surgery.

However, he battled back from the injury early to play in Pittsburgh's 42-21 wild-card loss to the Chiefs.

Smith-Schuster signed a one-year, $3.25 million deal with Kansas City during the offseason that includes another $7.5 million in incentives, marking the end of his five-year Steelers career that saw him catch 323 passes for 3,855 yards and 26 touchdowns in 63 games.

"I just thought this opportunity fit more for me," Smith-Schuster said of signing with the Chiefs in March. "In the sense of coming here and playing for Andy [Reid] and obviously the OC [Eric Bieniemy] and everyone else. Seeing the opportunity where I can prove my skills and see what I can do."

The 25-year-old added that it was hard to turn down the opportunity to catch passes from star quarterback Patrick Mahomes. He came into Sunday's game with 44 catches for 582 yards and two scores.

Smith-Schuster is Mahomes' top target alongside tight end Travis Kelce. An extended absence will require an uptick in production from wideouts Mecole Hardman, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Kadarius Toney.

Chiefs WRs JuJu Smith-Schuster, Mecole Hardman Trade Advice Before Fantasy Deadline

Fantasy managers searching for depth at wide receiver before the Nov. 30 trade deadline would do well to look at what's happening with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Despite some questions coming into the year about what the offense would look like without Tyreek Hill, things have more or less been the same as they ever were.

Patrick Mahomes leads the league in passing yards (2,605) and passing touchdowns (21) through eight games. The bulk of his targets are going to Travis Kelce, but the receiving options on the outside have been better than expected.

Week 3 was a sloppy performance for the Chiefs in a 20-17 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, but it wasn't a major cause for concern going forward.

Kelce is leading the team with 77 targets, 57 receptions, 659 yards and seven touchdowns. Given how dire things have been at tight end around the NFL, no one with him on their roster should think about dealing him unless it's a ridiculous overpay.

JuJu Smith-Schuster was a great buy-low option coming into 2022 after leaving the Pittsburgh Steelers and whatever Ben Roethlisberger was trying to do last year. The 25-year-old has 582 yards on 44 receptions through eight games.

Smith-Schuster has been a WR2 in fantasy this season. He ranks 20th in total PPR scoring (112.2) and 25th in average PPR scoring per game (14.0), per FantasyPros.com.

Adding to Smith-Schuster's value is how well he's played lately. The USC alum has 325 total yards in his past three games and is averaging 7.3 receptions on 8.3 targets during that span.

If you are trying to acquire Smith-Schuster for the second half, it's going to cost you a lot.

Mecole Hardman will certainly be easier to get in a trade, but he's not been nearly as impactful as Kelce, Smith-Schuster or even Marques Valdes-Scantling. The 24-year-old has scored five touchdowns in his past three games, but he would need to keep up that pace to have significant value going forward.

Hardman's most productive game as a wide receiver came last week against the Tennessee Titans. He turned nine targets into six receptions and 79 yards with a touchdown.

The lack of week-to-week consistency from Hardman over the course of the entire season makes him too volatile for me to bet on him as a regular starter. If you want to acquire him as a flex option down the stretch, you might be able to get him for a fairly low price.

Valdes-Scantling was a boom-or-bust player in four seasons with the Green Bay Packers. He has the speed to take the top off defenses (career average of 17.5 yards per reception).

Much like Hardman, Valdes-Scantling continues to be hit-and-miss from week to week. He had a season-high 111 yards in Week 8 against the San Francisco 49ers, but he followed it up with one catch for 12 yards against the Titans.

Valdes-Scantling also is yet to find the end zone this season, despite averaging 16.6 yards per reception.

If you have decided you need to add one Chiefs receiver before the trade deadline, Smith-Schuster is the best player to target. Hardman is worth adding if you need depth, but he's a player who you should only be starting if there is a favorable matchup.

Chiefs Stars Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce Fantasy Trade Advice Before the Deadline

The Kansas City Chiefs would never dream of trading Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce in real life.

But fantasy football doesn't always mirror real life.

Perhaps someone in your league has Kelce and is in drastic need of a running back to replace an injured playmaker. That sounds like the perfect time to step in and make a trade for one of the biggest game-changers in all of fantasy football.

From a positional standpoint, the drop-off from Kelce to the No. 2 tight end is arguably bigger than the gap between first and second at any other spot on the field.

That means fantasy football managers with the University of Cincinnati product at a position that is often defined by weekly inconsistency have a distinct advantage over their opposition, whereas there isn't a huge difference between having an A.J. Brown compared to Christian Kirk at wide receiver.

Kelce leads all tight ends in catches (57), receiving yards (659) and touchdown catches (seven).

By comparison, Zach Ertz is second with 46 catches, Dallas Goedert is second with 521 receiving yards, and Mark Andrews is second with five touchdown catches. Nobody does everything quite as well as Kelce, which makes him worthy of a trade featuring a running back or wide receiver.

The same might not be said about Mahomes.

While he is a fantasy and real-life star who is capable of putting up five touchdowns in any given game, the drop-off isn't quite as drastic at the quarterback position. Fantasy players with Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson, Jalen Hurts and even Geno Smith are likely almost as happy with their signal-callers as they would be with Mahomes.

Even Justin Fields and Tua Tagovailoa have been fantasy stars of late, with the former setting records with his rushing ability.

Fantasy players could afford to trade Mahomes if the return is significant enough because there are better options at QB than at tight end for someone moving Kelce. Maybe one of those options would come back in a trade for the Chiefs quarterback.

Proceed with caution, but it is at least something worth exploring for the right price.

Chiefs WRs Skyy Moore, Kadarius Toney's Trade Advice for Dynasty Fantasy Leagues

(Photo by Scott Winters/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images)

While fantasy football managers have received little return on Skyy Moore or Kadarius Toney this season, the Kansas City Chiefs wide receivers could be undervalued assets in dynasty leagues.

The Chiefs selected Moore in the second round of the 2022 NFL draft in part to help replace Tyreek Hill. The 22-year-old has caught just six passes for 100 yards on 13 targets through eight games.

Toney joined the team in October following his trade from the New York Giants. He made his Kansas City debut in a 20-17 Week 9 win over the Tennessee Titans, hauling in two passes for 12 yards.

Of the two, Moore is probably the more attractive asset in dynasty formats.

The Chiefs' investment in him is slightly higher than Toney, who cost a compensatory third-round pick and a sixth-rounder. Toney is more of a wild card as well given how poorly his New York Giants tenure went.

Even though a different regime is in charge in New York, you generally don't see a team trade a player who was selected in the first round one year earlier.

Mecole Hardman and JuJu Smith-Schuster are free agents in the offseason, and Marquez Valdez-Scantling's three-year, $30 million contract doesn't make it difficult for the Chiefs to move on in 2023 or 2024.

As much as Moore is a peripheral figure now, he could have a significantly bigger role in the passing game next year. The same goes for Toney, though it's tougher right now to see where he fits into Kansas City's long-term plans.

Trading for Moore or Toney could be a worthwhile gambit. Their values are slightly higher in dynasty leagues, but neither should command a high price tag.

Of course, their relatively meager production so far offers a compelling reason to stand pat if you have either on your roster. Unless a rival manager is willing to go above and beyond, betting on Moore or Toney's long-term upside is the smarter play.

Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs vs. Justin Herbert, Chargers Flexed into Week 11 SNF Slot

The NFL is kicking the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cincinnati Bengals out of primetime later this month and replacing them with the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers.

The league announced it will be moving the Nov. 20 game between the Chiefs and Chargers into Sunday Night Football while sliding Steelers vs. Bengals into the 4:25 p.m. ET window.

Since 2006, the NFL has reserved the right to flex games into primetime, though Fox and CBS can "protect" certain games. The league can flex games twice between Weeks 5-10 and then at any point it deems fit in Weeks 11-17. There is no Sunday night game in Week 18.

Disappointed Bengals fans can send their ire to Pittsburgh's moribund offense, which likely played a huge part in the NFL's decision. The Steelers are a disappointing 2-6 and have not scored more than 23 points in a game all season.

Meanwhile, the Chargers and Chiefs sit atop the AFC West and would be playoff teams if the season ended today. The NFL is not going to pass up many opportunities to put a Patrick Mahomes vs. Justin Herbert game on the largest possible stage.

The scheduling change will put the Chargers in primetime in back-to-back weeks, as they play this Sunday night against the San Francisco 49ers.

Kansas City and Los Angeles played its first regular-season matchup on Thursday Night Football in Week 2. The Chiefs will now play at least six primetime games during their 2022 schedule.

NFL Exec: Chiefs Rest Patrick Mahomes' Arm Like MLB Pitcher Due to Lack of Run Game

Patrick Mahomes might look superhuman at times, but the Kansas City Chiefs are well aware their starting quarterback shouldn't be pushed beyond his physical limits.

The Athletic's Mike Sando spoke to an NFC team executive who said Kansas City needs to manage Mahomes' workload because of his lack of support across the offense.

"Mahomes doesn't have a hint of a running game, and they have to rest his arm like he's an MLB pitcherโ€”damn near 70 throws and he's out there running around and it doesn't even look stressful," the executive said.

The 2018 MVP is fresh off a 20-17 overtime win over the Tennessee Titans that saw him attempt 68 passes, 14 more than his previous single-game high.

For the season, he has 331 attempts through eight starts, which averages out to just under 41.4 per game. If he continues at that pace, then he will reach third on the list for most pass attempts in one season (704).

As the executive laid out, the Chiefs have little choice but to lean heavily on the aerial attack.

Kansas City is 23rd in rushing offense with 103.5 yards per game on the ground, and even that might be a somewhat flattering number to the backfield.

Mahomes is third on the team in rushing yards (176). The threat he poses as a passer inevitably means opponents will drop more defenders deep at times, which opens up running lanes as well.

As long as Mahomes is on the roster, the Chiefs are never going to be a team that needs a Derrick Henry-type running back. The front office and coaching staff were probably hopeful they'd get more from Clyde Edwards-Helaire, though. The 2020 first-round pick is setting career lows in yards per carry (4.2) and rushing yards per game (36.6).

Kansas City is second in total offense (415.3 yards per game) and second in scoring (30.4 points per game). As the cliche goes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

But head coach Andy Reid and his staff know Mahomes can grow fatigued like any other player. Allowing him to heave 60-plus passes probably won't be the norm going forward.

Patrick Mahomes willed the Kansas City Chiefs to a 20-17 comeback victory in overtime against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday evening.

The star quarterback completed a career-high 43 passes on 68 attempts for 446 yards, one touchdown and one interception. His yardage total tied for the third-highest mark of his career.

As impressive as Mahomes was through the air, he arguably did his best work on the ground, where he rushed for 63 yards and a score in addition to a two-point conversion that tied the game at 17 with 2:56 left in regulation.

That capped off a 13-play, 93-yard drive, which also included a Mahomes 20-yard scramble on 3rd-and-17 as well as a 14-yard touchdown rush.

The Titans had the upper hand for much of the second half, thanks largely to running back Derrick Henry, who rushed for two second-quarter touchdowns to give Tennessee a 14-9 halftime edge en route to 115 rushing yards.

The Titans' defense then shut the Chiefs down for the first four second-half drives, which ended in an interception, a missed field goal and a pair of punts.

But Mahomes shined when needed most on the game-tying drive.

The game eventually went to overtime, where Mahomes led Kansas City on a 13-play, 64-yard drive capped by a 28-yard Harrison Butker field goal.

The key play occurred when Mahomes scrambled for what seemed like an eternity before finding tight end Noah Gray down the field for a huge gain:

The Titans turned the ball over on downs after a pair of sacks put them 16 yards behind the original line of scrimmage on their overtime chance, ending the game.

During and after the matchup, analysts and fans alike were awed by Mahomes' magic once again, with some calling him the MVP thus far.
