The No. 1 Maryland Terrapins defeated the No. 7 Cornell Big Red 9-7 in the 2022 NCAA men's lacrosse championship on Monday at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Connecticut, for their first title since 2017 and fourth in school history.

The win pushed Maryland's record to 18-0 and they became the 13th team in NCAA men's lacrosse history to complete a perfect season.

The Terrapins got out to an impressive start despite giving up the first goal of the game on a shot from Cornell's CJ Kirst with 7:28 left in the first period. Maryland bounced back when Eric Malever came around from behind the net to tie the game 1-1 with 5:47 left in the first.

Following Malever's goal, Maryland went on to score four consecutive goals, inflating their lead to 5-1 with 13 minutes remaining in the second period. Anthony DeMaio scored three of those goals before finding Owen Prybylski in transition for the team's fifth tally.

Kirst responded with his second goal of the game with 11:49 remaining in the second period to cut Maryland's lead to 5-2, but the Terrapins added two more goals from DeMaio and Logan Wisnauskas to take a 7-2 lead into halftime.

While Maryland started the second half with two quick goals from Wisnauskas and Jonathan Donville, the Terrapins' momentum faded and they allowed the Big Red to get back into the game when Aiden Blake scored with 4:34 remaining in the third period to make it 9-3.

Cornell dominated the fourth period, outscoring Maryland 4-0 on goals from Michael Long, Hugh Kelleher, Spencer Wirtheim and John Piatelli, but the Big Red's comeback fell short as they couldn't overcome the big first half from the Terps.

Maryland goaltender Logan McNaney essentially won the game for his team as he remained solid through Cornell's fourth-period onslaught. He made 17 saves on 40 shots and made a number of key saves in the final minutes of Monday's game.

It was the perfect end to a perfect season for the Terrapins, who dominated each of their opponents en route to the championship game, defeating Vermont, Virginia and Princeton in the NCAA tournament before holding off Cornell for the title.

The 2022 NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse National Championship Game finally has its competitors, with the seventh-seeded Cornell Big Red set to take on the top-seeded Maryland Terrapins at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Connecticut, May 30.

The Big Red had a dominant performance against the sixth-seeded Rutgers Scarlet Knights in the Final Four on Saturday to punch their ticket to the championship game for the first time since 2009.

The Terrapins had a similarly impressive outing against the fifth-seeded Princeton Tigers in the Final Four to get back to the championship game for the second straight season and third time since 2017.

Cornell and Maryland haven't met since the quarterfinals of the 2018 NCAA tournament. The Terrapins knocked the Big Red out of the tournament that year with a 13-8 win to reach the national title game.

Maryland owns a 15-5-1 record all-time against Cornell.

Here is everything you need to know about the 2022 national championship game.

Men's Final Four Scores

(7) Cornell def. (6) Rutgers 17-10

(1) Maryland def. (5) Princeton 13-8

Cornell's Road to the Championship Game

Cornell has impressed throughout this year's tournament, though the team didn't face much of a test in the first round against Ohio State, defeating the Buckeyes 15-8.

The Big Red had a much more difficult time with Delaware in the quarterfinals. Both teams were tied 7-7 through the first three quarters of last Saturday's matchup, and Cornell rallied for three goals in the fourth quarter to defeat the Fightin' Blue Hens 10-8.

In the semifinals, Cornell dominated sixth-seeded Rutgers for a 17-10 victory to move to 14-4. It was a continuation of what has been an impressive offensive showing for the Big Red in the tournament.

That said, Cornell has been solid offensively throughout the 2021-22 campaign. John Piatelli, the team's leading scorer, has tallied 65 goals this season, which includes a five-goal outing against Rutgers on Saturday. In addition, CJ Kirst has notched 53 goals, and the Big Red have three other players who have tallied at least 22 goals this year.

Cornell goaltender Chayse Ierlan, though, will need to be much better against top-seeded Maryland in the championship game. The senior has a 11.07 goals-against average this year and a .527 save percentage.

The Terrapins are averaging 17.3 goals per game in this tournament and are lethal offensively. If Ierlan can't step up, the championship game could be grueling for the Big Red.

Cornell has not won an NCAA title since 1977. A win would mark its fourth victory in the national title game.

Maryland's Road to the Championship Game

The top-seeded Terrapins have cruised through the NCAA tournament and will be the favorite against the seventh-seeded Big Red.

Maryland opened the tournament with a massive 21-5 victory over Vermont, which was highlighted by a nine-goal second quarter. It went on to defeat Virginia 18-9 in the quarterfinals.

The semifinals brought more of a test for the Terrapins as the Princeton Tigers were down just 7-4 at halftime, but Maryland went on to score six goals in the second half to reach the championship game with another dominant outing.

While both Cornell and Maryland have boasted explosive offenses, the Terrapins will have the upper hand offensively in the title game.

Logan Wisnauskas, Maryland's leading scorer, entered the semifinals with 55 goals. However, he's not the only player who has contributed significantly on offense this year as both Keegan Khan and Owen Murphy entered Saturday's Final Four with 32 goals.

The Terrapins have six players with at least 25 goals this season and 11 players who have reached double digits in scoring.

In addition, Maryland has also received solid goaltending from both Logan McNaney and Drew Morris. McNaney has posted a 8.64 goals-against average and .575 save percentage, while Morris has posted a 13.08 goals-against average and .544 save percentage.

Maryland's combination of offense and goalkeeping prowess will make this incredibly difficult for Cornell in Monday's championship game.

If the Terrapins win the title, it will be their first since 2017 and fourth overall.

Prediction: Maryland def. Cornell 16-9

Cornell and Maryland filled out the semifinal field in the 2022 NCAA men's lacrosse tournament.

Rutgers and Princeton punched their tickets Saturday with their victories in the quarterfinal round. That left two more spots up for grabs.

On Sunday, No. 7 Cornell faced off with a Delaware squad that was fresh off upsetting Georgetown. On the other side of the bracket, top-seeded Maryland took on Virginia in a rematch of the 2021 title game.

Here's how things look heading into the semis.

Quarterfinal Results

No. 6 Rutgers def. No. 3 Penn 11-9

No. 5 Princeton def. No. 4 Yale 14-10

No. 7 Cornell def. Delaware 10-8

No. 1 Maryland def. Virginia 18-9

Semifinal Schedule

No. 1 Maryland vs. No. 5 Princeton

No. 7 Cornell vs. No. 6 Rutgers

The semifinals are scheduled for May 28, and the game times are yet to be announced. Bracket can be found here.

Sunday Recap

Less than one minute had come off the clock before John Piatelli put Cornell up on Delaware in the first period. Piatelli added a second at the 7:48 mark before the Blue Hens reeled off four unanswered goals to jump ahead 4-2.

Spencer Wirtheim got one back for the Big Red before the period ended, and Angelo Petrakis and CJ Kirst each scored in the second frame to put them back into the lead.

While the second period belonged to Cornell, Delaware battled back and tied things up at seven goals apiece in the third.

Michael Long broke the deadlock at the 10:06 mark of the fourth period as the Big Red capitalized on a turnover by Reed Kurtz.

Goals by Wirtheim and Billy Coyle provided a sizable buffer for Connor Buczek's team, one too big for Delaware to overcome at such a late juncture.

There wasn't much in the way of drama as Maryland took down Virginia in resounding fashion.

After the first period, the Terps were up 4-1, and their lead had swelled to 9-4 by halftime, with Anthony DeMaio netting a hat trick. They were up by as many as 10 goals in the third period as they kept pouring it on. Only six seconds separated goals by Logan Wisnauskas and Owen Murphy.

Wisnauskas finished with a hat trick of his own, while Murphy poured in four goals.

Maryland clearly had some unfinished business after losing to Virginia in last year's national championship, and denying the Cavaliers a third straight title in such emphatic fashion likely added to the thrill of Sunday's victory.

The Terrapins haven't dropped a game all season, and they've outscored their two opponents in the tournament 39-14.

As much as a single-elimination format creates a level of uncertainty, it's difficult seeing anybody stop Maryland this season.

The National Lacrosse League announced that hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, Brooklyn Nets head coach Steve Nash, two-time golf major winner Dustin Johnson and Nets governor Joe Tsai have been announced as co-owners of its new Las Vegas franchise.

Jess Golden of CNBC relayed the news from the NLL on Monday.

Last season, the NLL had 10 active franchises from coast-to-coast in the United States in addition to three Canadian teams.

However, the box lacrosse league has since expanded to 15.

Panther City Lacrosse Club of Fort Worth, Texas, is the 14th team in the league, and the squad will pick its roster via an expansion draft on June 29.

Las Vegas is the 15th franchise, and it will begin play in the fall of 2022. The team will play at MGM Resorts Internationalโ€™s Michelob Ultra Arena. The team name, logo and colors have yet to be determined, although the team is soliciting team name ideas from fans via www.lasvegaslacrosse.com.

According to KLAS-TV (Las Vegas' CBS affiliate), the NLL awarded Las Vegas its 15th franchise spot on May 26. Tsai was announced as the owner, with a reported purchase price of $10 million.

Tsai's co-owners have impeccable athletic resumes.

Gretzky, a nine-time NHL MVP and the league's all-time goals, assists and points leader, is the unquestioned hockey GOAT.

Johnson, who set the Masters record by shooting 20-under at the tournament in November 2020, is the No. 2 golfer in the world. He is Gretzky's son-in-law.

Nash is a two-time NBA MVP and Basketball Hall of Famer. He just finished his first season coaching the Nets, whom Tsai bought in September 2019.

The 2021 NCAA Men's Lacrosse National Championship Game is set, and it will pit the fourth-seeded Virginia Cavaliers against the third-seeded Maryland Terrapins.

The Cavaliers, which are looking to repeat as national champions, nearly let a four-goal lead slip away against top-seeded North Carolina in the Final Four on Saturday, but they were able to hang on for a 12-11 win.

Meanwhile, the Terrapins were the better team from start to finish against No. 2 Duke on Saturday, and they are back in the national title game for the first time since 2017.

Virginia and Maryland met once before in a clash for the national championship, and it was the Cavaliers who prevailed by a 9-7 score in 2011.

Here is everything you need to know about the second-ever national championship game meeting between the Cavs and Terps.

Men's Final Four Scores

(4) Virginia def. (1) North Carolina, 12-11

(3) Maryland def. (2) Duke, 14-5

Virginia's Road to the Title Game

Two years removed from winning the national championship, the Cavaliers are looking to do it again after upsetting top-ranked North Carolina by a 12-11 score in the Final Four.

Since there was no NCAA men's lacrosse tournament held last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Virginia is the defending national champ.

The Cavaliers had plenty of confidence going into Saturday's national semifinal game since they split the season series with UNC and already knew they could beat the Tar Heels.

Things got worrisome late, as a 12-8 Hoos lead shrunk to 12-11, but relentless defense sent Virginia to the national title game:

With the win over North Carolina, the Cavaliers improved to 13-4 on the season, and they are now in prime position to win the seventh national title in school history, which would put them all alone in third on the all-time list.

Payton Cormier was the star for Virginia against North Carolina with three goals, and that has been the case all season long, as he leads the Cavs with 43 goals.

It is far from a one-man show, however, as Connor Shellenberger has 33 goals and the quartet of Matt Moore, Charlie Bertrand, Ian Laviano and Peter Garno have each scored 20 or more.

On top of that, Virginia has an elite goalkeeper in Alex Rode, who has 200 saves on the season and held the high-scoring Tar Heels to just 11 goals Saturday.

The Cavaliers are a deep and multi-talented team with all the tools needed to win another national title.

Maryland's Road to the Title Game

The Terrapins were slightly disrespected with a No. 3 seed in the tournament despite going undefeated, and they proved Saturday that they may have deserved the top overall seed.

They crushed No. 2 Duke by a 14-5 score, improving their record to 15-0 on the year and sending them to the title game with an unblemished mark.

The Terps are just four years removed from their last national title, and another would give them four all-time, which would break a tie with Duke and Cornell for sixth on the all-time list.

Unsurprisingly, Jared Bernhardt was a dominant force for Maryland against Duke on Saturday, scoring five times to bring his seasonal total to 69.

He is Maryland's leading scorer, but it is far from a one-man show, as Daniel Maltz and Logan Wisnauskas have both eclipsed the 30-goal plateau this season as well.

It was Wisnauskas who had the highlight-reel goal of the game for Maryland against Duke in a game that featured no shortage of scoring from the Terrapins:

While Maryland doesn't have quite as much depth of scoring as Virginia with four 20-goal scorers compared to six for the Cavaliers, the Terps' star power up front is unmatched.

Like Virginia, Maryland boasts a quality goalkeeper as well in the form of Logan McNaney, who entered the Final Four allowing less than 10 goals per game and then proceeded to stymie the Blue Devils.

The Terrapins have to be feeling good about their chances after outclassing Duke, but they will be faced with a tough challenge against a Virginia team that just knocked off the top overall seed.

Prediction

Maryland defeats Virginia 10-8.

Joe Robertson scored in overtime to help No. 2 seed Duke overcome an upset bid from Loyola during Sunday's quarterfinals in the 2021 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship.

Maryland and Notre Dame also went to overtime before Anthony DeMaio scored the winner for the Terrapins in the day's second quarterfinal.

North Carolina and Virginia previously advanced to the semifinals during Saturday's action. Let's check out all of the latest tournament information followed by a recap of Sunday's play.

(3) Maryland d. (6) Notre Dame; 14-13 (OT)

Semifinal Matches (May 29)

(1) North Carolina vs. (4) Virginia

(2) Duke vs. (3) Maryland

Day 4 Recap

Duke and Loyola traded the lead back and forth all game, but it appeared the underdog Greyhounds were primed to earn the program's fifth Final Four appearance with two goals 48 seconds apart by Dan Wigley and Kevin Lindley to take a 9-8 lead with just over two minutes left in regulation.

Loyola defenseman Cam Wyers, one of the nation's best defenders, was called for an unnecessary roughness penalty with 1:38 remaining, however, which opened the door for Brennan O'Neill to score the tying goal for the Blue Devils 29 seconds later.

Duke's last-second possession in regulation failed to produce the winner, which sent the teams into sudden-death overtime.

The Blue Devils earned the first possession of overtime, but Wyers forced a turnover to put the upset in the hands of Loyola's attackers.

They failed to convert, and Robertson, who'd already showcased his flair for the dramatic with two overtime goals earlier in the season, stepped up for Duke again in a crucial spot.

"I think when the game's on the line, that's my favorite part," Robertson told reporters. "That's what makes it exciting. That's why athletes competeโ€”because you have a chance to lose. You'll be more upset if you didn't take a shot than if you miss a shot or it gets saved."

His goal sent Duke to its 13th Final Four for a chance to compete for the program's fourth national title.

Meanwhile, the day's second game looked like a potential blowout in the making as Maryland rushed out to a 5-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Notre Dame fought back by outscoring the Terrapins by a 6-2 margin in the second to send the game into halftime tied at seven.

The seesaw nature of the match continued in the second half as the Fighting Irish built a three-goal lead early in the fourth period only for the Terps to score three times in 46 seconds to level the contest.

After a barrage of goals throughout the game, the final 4:24 of regulation was scoreless to set up another overtime thriller. This time it was DeMaio punching his team's ticket to the penultimate round.

The NCAA tournament resumes with the semifinals Saturday followed by the championship match in its annual slot on Memorial Day afternoon next Monday. The Final Four will take place at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Connecticut.

The quarterfinals for the 2021 NCAA men's lacrosse tournament are set.

After North Carolina, Rutgers, Notre Dame and Georgetown advanced past the first round Saturday, Maryland, Virginia, Duke and Loyola Maryland joined them in the quarterfinals with wins Sunday.

Here is a look at the bracket (which can be found in full at NCAA.com), quarterfinals schedule and results from Sunday's action.

Quarterfinals Schedule

Sunday's Results

No. 3 Maryland def. Vermont, 17-11

No. 4 Virginia def. Bryant, 13-11

No. 2 Duke def. High Point, 16-10

Loyola Maryland def. No. 7 Denver, 14-13

Sunday was a day for mostly chalk.

Three of the four ranked teams advanced, which should only add intrigue to the later rounds.

While Maryland jumped out to a quick lead and never looked back against Vermont behind six goals from Jared Bernhardt, there was no shortage of drama in Virginia's two-goal win over Bryant.

It seemed as if the Cavaliers were in full control when they jumped out to a 6-3 lead, but the Bulldogs answered with three straight goals to tie it. Virginia responded with two straight goals to take the lead back just for Bryant to score four in a row to go up 10-8.

Undaunted, Peter Garno, Grayson Sallade, Ian Laviano, Payton Cormier and Charlie Bertrand scored five straight goals, with the last four coming in the final period to all but clinch the win.

Five different Virginia players scored two goals each in a balanced attack that will be necessary if the Cavaliers are going to make a championship run.

Fellow ACC squad Duke had much less trouble cruising to victory during Sunday's first-round slate, as it handled High Point with relative ease. Michael Sowers spearheaded the effort with four goals, while Sean Lowrie, Brennan O'Neill and Owen Caputo each found the back of the net multiple times.

Sunday saved the best game for last, as Loyola Maryland jumped out to a commanding lead against No. 7 Denver and held on for a thrilling one-goal victory.

The Greyhounds took a 9-4 lead into halftime and appeared to be well on their way toward an upset win. However, Denver started the second half with three straight goals to climb back into it and set up a back-and-forth second half.

Jack Hannah's goal with three minutes remaining cut the lead to 14-13, but Loyola Maryland's defense shut down Denver's attack the rest of the way.

Aidan Olmstead led the way with five goals for the victors.
