NASCAR's Kyle Busch Required to Take Sensitivity Training After Using R-Word

Kyle Busch will have to complete sensitivity training prior to the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series season after using the R-word during an on-track interview.

"The two-time series champion used a term that disparages those with intellectual disabilities when describing an on-track incident with Brad Keselowski," NASCAR.com staff wrote Monday.

Busch apologized Sunday for the remark:

Down the last stretch of the race, Busch and Keselowski were running second and third behind Alex Bowman. Keselowski made an aggressive move for second place on the final lap and nearly took out the No. 18 car.

A runner-up finish wasn't enough for Busch to qualify for the Championship 4, so his pursuit of a title is over. His frustration with the outcome appeared to be evident during the interview.

Busch's punishment matches that of Hailie Deegan, whom NASCAR ordered to undergo sensitivity training before the start of this season after she used the R-word during an online video stream.

NASCAR driver Kyle Busch apologized for using a slur when speaking to reporters after Sunday's race at Martinsville Speedway.

"He drills my ass coming out of [Turn] 4 for no reason," Busch said when discussing Brad Keselowski. "I mean, where was he going? What was he gonna do, spin me out? He was trying to do a Harvick is what he was trying to do. For what? For second place? To do what, he wasn't going to transfer through with that. It's freaking r----ded, man. It's so stupid."

Busch also said he should "beat the s--t out of" Keselowski.

He tweeted an apology for using the R-word after the interview:

A similar situation happened in January when NASCAR driver Hailie Deegan apologized for using the same word during a virtual race that aired on Twitch.

NASCAR announced Deegan would undergo sensitivity training as a result.

As for Sunday's race, Zack Albert of NASCAR.com noted Busch finished in second place behind Alex Bowman and fell three points short of advancing from the Round of 8. Keselowski, Ryan Blaney and Joey Logano were among the other notable names who were eliminated.

Busch's frustration with Keselowski stemmed from a tense final lap that included contact.

The Kansas Speedway will host its 32nd NASCAR Cup Series race Sunday when the postseason roars to the Hollywood Casino 400, the second race of the Round of 8.

Kyle Larson will be on the pole as the final eight drivers left to contend for the title battle it out to be among the last four in Arizona on Nov. 7. Larson won the Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 500 at the Texas Motor Speedway last time out and leads all drivers in playoff points.

Denny Hamlin, who's third in the standings, has three victories at Kansas. So he will be leaning on experience as he tries to keep Larson, the favorite, from making his fourth trip to Victory Lane this postseason.

Here's a quick look at the schedule, lineup of top drivers and odds via DraftKings Sportsbook.

As NASCAR rides into Kansas, the top four playoffs spots are held by Larson, Ryan Blaney, Hamlin and Kyle Busch, respectively, with Chase Elliott and Brad Keselowski in fifth and sixth place.

Four drivers will be eliminated at the end of the Xfinity 500 at Martinsville Speedway on Oct. 31, so all drivers in the top eight will be racing for points and a spot in the Championship 4.

Joey Logano in eighth has 4,020 points, 103 points behind Larson, who clinched a spot in the final round with his win at Texas. The fact that Larson doesn't need to win at Kansas poses an interesting question for Hendrick Motorsports, which also has Elliott knocking on the door for a final-four berth.

Does the team push Larson for another win, or does it back Elliott on Sunday and focus on the former in Arizona?

"Hopefully, we can join [Larson] in Phoenix, and I'm looking forward to these next two weeks," Elliott told Jim Utter of Motorsports.com. "I think we can run good at the next couple, and I feel like we're all super close in points. I feel like if we just go do our job these next two weeks and control what's in our hands, we'll be alright."

Elliott is just eight points behind Busch, so this race could come down to the battle between the past two NASCAR Cup Series champions.

"We obviously won earlier this year at Kansas and really look forward to going back again this weekend," Busch told Pete Pistone of Motor Racing Network. "It's been a good place for us more recently. Excited to have the opportunity to go back there and run up front all day and mind our P's and Q's and get some points.

"Scoring a win would be even bigger, but ultimately having another solid day to keep our point total up will be important, as well."

With so many stories on the 1.5-mile track, the Hollywood Casino 400 should be quite the race for NASCAR fans.

The NASCAR Cup Series postseason field has been cut in half from its original number.

Eight drivers survived the first two stages of the playoffs to reach the final three-race stage of the postseason, which begins on Sunday at Texas Motor Speedway.

Kyle Larson, Denny Hamlin, Martin Truex Jr., Ryan Blaney, Kyle Busch, Chase Elliott, Joey Logano and Brad Keselowski advanced from the round of 12 to the round of eight.

The eight drivers will battle at Texas, Kansas and Martinsville over the next three weeks for four playoff spots.

The top four competitors after Martinsville will battle it out for the playoff crown at Phoenix on November 7.

Larson, Hamlin, Truex and Blaney start the round of eight in the four qualifying positions. Busch is one point back of Blaney, Elliott is two points behind the cut, Logano is 11 points adrift and Keselowski needs to make up a 16-point gap between himself and Blaney.

The NASCAR Cup Series is making its second trip to Texas this season but its first for a points race.

The Cup Series visited Texas back in June for the All-Star Race, which was won by Larson.

Larson has to be viewed as the favorite to capture the postseason title. He has a win in each postseason round and has been the most consistent driver on the circuit all season long.

Larson comes into Texas off a victory on the Charlotte road course. He also won at Bristol in the final race of the round of 16.

Hamlin matched Larson's performance with a win to kick off the round of 16 and round of 12. He won at Darlington and Las Vegas to secure safe passage to the next rounds.

Hamlin landed in ninth place in the Cup Series' last points race at Texas in October 2020. His Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Busch and Truex went one-two at that event.

Larson and Hamlin are in the best positions possible to advance to the championship round on points. Larson owns a 35-point gap on Hamlin, who is seven points above the cut line.

If the two drivers continue at their current pace, they should make up half of the championship contenders in a few weeks.

All it takes is one win by a driver in the bottom four, or a poor day at the track, to rearrange the postseason picture.

Busch is the reigning champion at Texas. He has four career wins at the track. If he goes back-to-back, or benefits from his strong history at the track, he could leap into the top four.

Since 2017, Busch, Hamlin, Kevin Harvick, Austin Dillon and Jimmie Johnson are the only drivers to win points races at Texas. There were multiple races at the track up until this season.

Dillon won the first trip to Texas last season. Busch took fourth in that race behind Dillon, Tyler Reddick and Logano last July.

Logano is the other driver in the bottom four to watch. He has nine top-10 finishes at Texas in his last 10 races at the track. At +1200, Logano carries some of the best value to win the race.

Thirteen drivers will fight for nine spots in the next round of the NASCAR Cup Series on Saturday night at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Denny Hamlin and Martin Truex Jr. advanced out of the round of 16 through victories in the first two playoff races. Kyle Larson got into the round of 12 off his points total.

Joey Logano, Ryan Blaney and Kevin Harvick sit in the best positions possible to move on to the next three-race postseason round.

If any of the 13 drivers from fourth to 16th place win at Bristol, they will automatically qualify for the round of 12.

All of the clinching scenarios to reach the round of 12 can be found here on NASCAR.com.

Kyle Busch is listed as the pre-race favorite because of his stellar history at Bristol.

The No. 18 car driver won three of the last seven races at the Tennessee track. He finished inside the top five for both of the races on the Bristol concrete in 2020.

The Cup Series visited Bristol earlier in the season, but that event took place on dirt.

Busch comes into Bristol in 10th place in the playoff standings with an eight-point edge over Alex Bowman in 13th place.

The other Busch brother, Kurt, had a pair of top-15 finishes at Bristol in 2020. He needs points more than Kyle Busch since he is in 12th in a tie with Bowman.

Bowman, Tyler Reddick, William Byron and Michael McDowell suffered setbacks in the first two playoff races that forced them beneath the cut line.

McDowell, who won the Daytona 500, is in the most trouble of being eliminated. He is 38 points adrift of Kurt Busch. Byron is within 18 points of Busch, while Reddick sits five points behind the No. 1 car driver.

The best-case scenario for any of those four drivers is to win the race, but that will be difficult among a field of drivers with past success at Bristol.

Kevin Harvick and Brad Keselowski, who both won in 2020, reside in the top 10 in points, and they have some comfort with their respective places in the standings.

Chase Elliott, Aric Almirola and Christopher Bell are among the drivers inside the top 12 who placed in the top 10 at Bristol last season.

Larson, Hamlin and Truex are already into the round of 12, but they could win the race and take away the automatic advancement spot.

Each of those three drivers are in strong form, and they could use the Bristol race to fine-tune things ahead of the next leg of races.

Truex and Hamlin begin the race on the front row. The last three winners on the Bristol concrete came from the first four starting positions.

The 16 drivers involved in the NASCAR Cup Series postseason experienced a mixed bag of results in the first of three round-of-16 races last weekend.

The early exits of certain drivers put more pressure on them to succeed on Saturday night at Richmond International Raceway.

Denny Hamlin secured his spot in the round of 12 with his victory at Darlington Raceway. Kyle Larson is in the best position to advance on points from Richmond.

Alex Bowman, who won at Richmond earlier this season, Kyle Busch, William Byron and Michael McDowell sit beneath the cut line after they went through troubles at Darlington.

The desperation of the drivers beneath the 12th-place cut line combined with the motivation of top playoff drivers to lock up round-of-12 spots should produce plenty of fireworks under the lights in Virginia.

The easiest way for a driver to secure safe passage into the round of 12 is to win at Richmond.

Hamlin has the opportunity to fine-tune things over the next two weeks because he is not under the pressure to advance.

Larson is in the best position to join Hamlin if he does not win. NASCAR.com outlined all of the potential clinching scenarios with Larson at the forefront.

Larson produced one of his worst results of the 2021 season at Richmond in April. He earned an 18th-place finish in a race won by his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Bowman.

Bowman will try to replicate the magic he found at Richmond to dig out of the early playoff hole he set for himself at Darlington.

The No. 48 car driver sits in 13th place, and he is level on points with Tyler Reddick, who finished two spots behind Larson in April on the Virginia short track.

Kyle Busch should also be in a good spot to leap above the cut line. He won both races at the track in 2018 and he took an eighth-place finish in April.

William Byron landed a seventh-place finish in April, so that should boost his prospects of moving out of 15th place to a more comfortable spot ahead of next week's trip to Bristol Motor Speedway.

The top eight positions from the April Richmond race were occupied by playoff qualifiers. Pre-race favorite Martin Truex Jr. started on the pole and finished fifth in that race. Hamlin, Joey Logano and Christopher Bell were second, third and fourth, respectively.

Truex completed the Richmond sweep in 2019, and he took second behind Brad Keselowski in the lone race at the circuit in 2020.

Larson can't be ignored as a pick to win since he has been the most consistent Cup Series this season. The No. 5 car driver has a chance to get out in front early from the pole position.

Starting up top does not guarantee success at Richmond since three of the last six winners won from starting spots outside the top 10.

However, the pole position should at least give Larson a chance to run in clean air to start and try to create some separation between himself and the rest of the pack.

Aric Almirola, who got into the playoffs with an unexpected win at New Hampshire, could be the best sleeper pick for prop bets on Saturday. He took sixth in April and carries some of the longest odds to win among the playoff drivers at +2500. A bet on Almirola to finish inside the top 10 at +350 carries plenty of value.

NASCAR at Darlington 2021: Denny Hamlin Holds Off Kyle Larson to Win Playoff Opener

Denny Hamlin took a step toward a Cup Series championship Sunday with a victory in the Cook Out Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway.

Hamlin outpaced Kyle Larson and the rest of the field in the Cup Series playoff opener and clinched a spot in the Round of 12.

He won the first stage and then retook the lead in the third stage before holding off any late charges from arguably the best driver in the field this year. It was also Hamlin's third career Southern 500 victory.

The biggest storyline heading to Darlington Raceway was the start of the 16-team, 10-race playoff.

The format is fairly simple, as the first round consists of three races and cuts the field from 16 to 12, the second round consists of three races and cuts the field from 12 to eight, and the third round consists of three races and cuts the field from eight to four. From there, the champion is the highest finisher of the four remaining in the final race.

Winning any of the three races per round automatically clinches a spot into the next round, so Hamlin won't have much to worry about until the Round of 12 begins.

Ryan Blaney started Sunday's race from the pole position, which figured to be a problem for the rest of the field. After all, he was coming off back-to-back wins at the Coke Zero Sugar 400 and FireKeepers Casino 400 and was on the short list of realistic contenders.

So was Larson, who was dominant this season with victories at the Pennzoil 400, Coca-Cola 600, Toyota Save Mart 350, NASCAR All-Star Race, Ally 400 and Go Bowling at The Glen race.

Yet it was Hamlin who won the caution-filled first stage that was defined by trouble elsewhere from his own impressive driving.

Alex Bowman ran into plenty of trouble by hitting the wall, getting clipped by William Byron and then working through a small fire on pit road. Elsewhere, Michael McDowell's day ended early when he hit the inside wall, and Chase Elliott's car had front-end damage that knocked him further back in the field.

The chaos continued in the second stage, as Kyle Busch's race came to an end after a crash with Austin Dillon. Busch also turned heads when he told reporters, "We were running like s--t. We got wrecked. It's what you get when you run like s--t."

Byron's disappointing day also ended with a crash in the second stage, but Larson avoided the trouble and won a second stage he largely controlled.

Fittingly, the third stage was also an exercise in attrition, as Blaney spun out after he was penalized for an uncontrolled tire. Martin Truex Jr. also went to the back of the field after he was caught speeding on pit road, and Elliott's race came to an end when he hit the wall.

Even with all that, there was plenty of drama with Hamlin seizing the lead and attempting to hold off Larson and Ross Chastain on the final stretch.

He was able to do so and prevailed in an eventful playoff opener.

NASCAR at Atlanta 2021 Results: Kurt Busch Holds Off Brother Kyle for 1st Win of Year

Most brothers play out their athletic battles in the backyard or in the driveway.

Some do it at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Kurt Busch won the Quaker State 400 on Sunday by outlasting his brother Kyle in an intense final stage that saw them trade the lead multiple times. The older sibling seized the lead with more than 20 laps remaining and outlasted every late charge from the younger one to clinch the victory.

Before the brotherly showdown, the biggest storyline coming into the race was whether Kyle Larson would notch his first win at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

He seemed ready to do just that considering his overall dominance this season with recent victories at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Sonoma Raceway, Nashville Superspeedway and the All-Star Race, but Ryan Blaney prevailed in the last race in Atlanta by holding off Larson down the stretch.

Sean Montgomery of NASCAR.com noted that despite the runner-up finish to Blaney, Larson led 411 laps and won three of the last four stages in his previous two starts in Atlanta.

Yet he and the rest of the field were behind Kyle Busch after Stage 1, who won his fourth stage of the season.

His brother Kurt was in second place after a stage that saw pole-sitter Chase Elliott drop back because of a mistake on pit road and a crash that involved Daniel Suarez, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Cody Ware.

The family affair continued in the second stage, as Kurt jumped out to the lead and rode it to his third stage victory of the year with Kyle flipping the script and finishing in second.

Some of the drama in the second stage was due to rainy weather in the Atlanta area, and Aric Almirola went for a long-shot victory. The race was official in case of a rainout after the 130th lap, so Almirola remained on the track while the leaders went for pit stops and actually briefly held the lead after that 130th lap.

Alas, there was no postponement, and Kurt Busch eventually retook the lead and ended that strategy.

There wasn't much building on the momentum for the Busch brothers, though, as there was a lengthy delay at the start of the third stage because the track needed surface repairs. Such a delay was all the more notable because Atlanta Motor Speedway will be repaved for the 2022 season.

Once racing resumed, it was all about whether Kurt would hold off Kyle. They both traded momentum, and the latter retook the lead on a cycle out after pitting ahead of his brother with fewer than 50 laps remaining.

https://twitter.com/aaronbearden93/status/1414352703078211584

That lead didn't last for long, as Kurt took advantage of traffic and positioning from his teammate Ross Chastain to jump into first place heading into the final 20 laps.

The one opportunity was all he needed, and the elder Busch brother earned the checkered flag.

NASCAR at Pocono 2021 Results: Kyle Busch Gets 2nd Win of Season; Larson Finishes 2nd

The only question for Kyle Busch entering the final lap at Sunday's Explore the Poconos 350 was whether he would have enough fuel to finish the race.

Spoiler alert: He did.

Busch beat Kyle Larson by a wide margin on Sunday, taking home his second win of the year.

Brad Keselowski, Kevin Harvick and Bubba Wallace rounded out the top five. Martin Truex Jr. and William Byron were the stage winners.

But it was Busch, despite battling transmission issues throughout the day, who won after deciding against a late fuel stop.

"The biggest thing was trying to time the restart right," Busch said on the NBC Sports broadcast after the race. "Leave pit road and come back around and be at full speed by the time the field takes the start/finish line. We were a little bit off on that. But it was all you could think about doing in that situation, just trying to think through every opportunity and every obstacle on you. That's just what we did."

Busch spent much of the race trying to keep his car from popping out of gear, only to watch it get stuck in fourth gear and burn out the clutch. Through it all, he managed to lead 30 laps and steal the win.

So he was understandably jovial after the race:

"Sometimes these races aren't always won by the fastest car," he told reporters.

While Busch managed to squeeze a win out of a tough situation, Larson struggled to overcome the day's adversities.

"Seemed like every point of the race, everything that happened in the race, nothing went my way," he told reporters. "Restarts, just guys messing up in front of me, me getting shuffled out of the groove, bad lane choices on my part, everything didn't go my way."

So it goes. He'll be hoping luck is on his side next Sunday, July 4 at the Jockey Made in America 250 at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. The race will be run at 2:30 p.m. ET on NBC.

Kyle Larson has two opportunities to add to his NASCAR Cup Series winning streak this weekend.

The No. 5 car driver sits on the pole Saturday for the first of two Cup Series events at Pocono Raceway.

Larson won three consecutive points races and took first at the NASCAR All-Star Race to cement himself as the front-runner to win the championship. He has the most victories on the Cup Series circuit this season, but he could be at a slight disadvantage at Pocono.

Points leader Denny Hamlin won two of the past three Pocono events, and Kyle Busch owns three victories at the track since 2017.

Larson's recent dominance is reflected in the odds for the Pocono Organics CBD 325.

The Hendrick Motorsports driver is a heavy favorite over Hamlin, Busch, Kevin Harvick and Chase Elliott.

Larson carries the advantage of starting on the pole for Saturday's race, which is the first of two events in two days at Pocono. The starting lineup for Sunday's race will be inverted based off the top 20 finishers from Saturday.

Starting position has been vital at Pocono over the past decade. Fifteen winners between 2010 and 2020 started inside the top 10. Three of those champions started from the pole, with the most recent being Busch in 2017.

Larson and Hendrick Motorsports teammate William Byron will start on the front row. Byron is the only Hendrick driver not to taste victory during the team's five-race winning streak in points events. Alex Bowman and Chase Elliott have one win each.

The front row must be aware of the threat Harvick poses from the start out of the third starting position. Harvick won the first race at Pocono and took second behind Hamlin in the Sunday race in June 2020.

Hamlin took his victory from the 19th spot on the starting grid. He will have to use some of that experience to reach the front from position No. 10.

Busch could also be a contender from his fifth position on the grid. He captured back-to-back wins at Pocono in 2018 and 2019 and was fifth in the event Harvick won in 2020.

Hamlin, Harvick and Busch could all be viewed as better bets to win over Larson because of the value attached to them and their experience at the track.

Aric Almirola is the wild card to watch in both races. He finished in third and fifth at last year's Pocono races and is slated to start 11th for Saturday's race. Almirola sits at +5000 to win outright and +155 to finish inside the top 10. The latter may be the safer play because of how dangerous Larson has been over the past month.
