Bleacher Report catches you up on the latest news from WWE and AEW.

WWE Booking Roman Reigns With Long-Term Plan in Mind

Triple H felt arguably his first twinge of backlash since taking over WWE creative after Clash at the Castle, with many feeling Drew McIntyre should have unseated Roman Reigns as undisputed champion.

It seems there was never any thought given to putting the strap on McIntyre.

Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio said WWE is booking Reigns with a long-term plan in place on who will unseat him.

"Their long-term story may have made it impossible for [Drew McIntyre] to win [at Clash at the Castle]. I mean, for the night he should have won, but they’re telling long-term stories," Meltzer said. "They want Roman Reigns to be a multi-, multi-year champion. If that’s their goal, then they didn’t want to screw up their goal. They certainly could have done it, but that’s their mentality."

With Reigns not expected to wrestle at Extreme Rules and Survivor Series typically not featuring title defenses, it's increasingly likely he will be champion as we head into 2023.

That leaves Day 1 or Royal Rumble as the likely next event where we'll see where this story is headed. Cody Rhodes and The Rock have been the two opponents most-often linked to Reigns at next year's WrestleMania. If WWE can get a Reigns-Rock match, it does not need a championship; the company could use the Rumble as a way to get the strap off Reigns and then move on to the Rock storyline.

If Rock isn't medically cleared or his schedule books up, Rhodes winning his first WWE championship at WrestleMania makes sense.

Veer Mahaan Push Put on Hold

It does not appear Veer Mahaan will be the one unseating Roman Reigns.

Fightful Select reported there are no "imminent creative plans" for Mahaan, who has not appeared on television in nearly a month. Veer's last match was a squash of Beaux Keller on the Aug. 15 edition of Raw. He has not even been used on house shows since.

Vince McMahon was still in charge during the infancy of Veer's push, but it's unclear if there was ever much of a plan for it to sustain. WWE spent months running "Veer's coming" vignettes with no payoff, and he spent his brief run in the spotlight mostly crushing jobbers.

There were occasional flashes of potential on the mic, but it's clear Triple H's creative vision differs from his predecessor in the handling of Mahaan.

Sasha Banks Wants to Own Her Character

We may have gotten our first hint at what it will take to get Sasha Banks back in WWE.

The Boss spoke on the importance of owning her creations during an appearance on Ahch-To Radio.

"For me, it’s really just owning my own IP [Intellectual Property] and owning the character behind the character and really defining, who is the character that is playing the character," Banks said. "It’s really just finding yourself. When it comes to even wrestling, that’s a character that I come up with, and I portray myself, and you have your writers coming in and giving a little more details of what they see for it. It’s really when it comes to characters in your life, it’s what you see for that character because only you know how you’re going to play it, and only you know how you see the vision of that character."

WWE owns all intellectual property rights to Sasha Banks and essentially every gimmick she's used over the course of her professional wrestling career. McMahon consistently changed the established names of characters to give WWE ownership, often drawing the ire of fans. Triple H showed less of an obsession with IP during his tenure running NXT, but it's unclear if that will carry over.

Though Banks was largely an in-house developmental project, it's possible she requested ownership over her character as part of her negotiations to return. It's widely expected that she and Naomi will be back on WWE television sometime soon after walking out over frustration with their creative direction in the spring.

WWE Rumors on Roman Reigns Title Match, Paul Heyman; Liv Morgan Responds to Criticism

Bleacher Report catches you up on the latest news from the WWE Universe.

Uncertainty Regarding Reigns' Next Opponent

Following his win over Drew McIntyre at Clash at the Castle thanks to interference from his cousin, Solo Sikoa, it is reportedly unclear who undisputed WWE universal champion Roman Reigns' next challenger will be.

According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t Subhojeet Mukherjee of ThirstyForNews.com), Reigns will not be part of Extreme Rules on Oct. 8, and he isn't expected to have his next "major match" until Crown Jewel in Saudi Arabia on Nov. 5.

Meltzer noted that while Kevin Owens and Seth Rollins have been teased as potential opponents and could face Reigns in the future, he has been told that neither of them will be The Tribal Chief's opponent at Crown Jewel.

Since beating Brock Lesnar to unify the world titles at WrestleMania, Reigns' appearances and matches have been fleeting. In fact, Clash at the Castle represented only his third televised title defense since WrestleMania.

With Reigns taking on a lighter schedule, it has arguably made his matches mean even more, and it has also allowed him to stretch his title run to beyond two years.

Any title defense Reigns has at this point is significant, and while Owens and Rollins would be great opponents, they apparently aren't on the immediate radar.

Karrion Kross makes sense as a potential challenger, given that he essentially gave Reigns a warning when he returned to the company last month.

Reigns could also possibly face Braun Strowman, who returned to WWE earlier this week and is seemingly ticketed to be a babyface on the SmackDown brand.

For now, it looks like Reigns will be left out of a major storyline for the next month, but his next rivalry is undoubtedly a topic of great interest to the WWE Universe.

WWE Waiting for Right Moment for Heyman Return

Paul Heyman is waiting in the wing until the perfect time to make his return to WWE programming.

According to Meltzer (h/t Mukherjee), Heyman has been in attendance at "all the Smackdowns and major events" since he last appeared on television, but WWE has been holding off in order for him to make a "dynamic return."

Heyman has not been seen on WWE programming since SummerSlam when he was in Reigns' corner for the Last Man Standing WWE Universal Championship match against Lesnar.

When Heyman attempted to stop Lesnar from attacking Reigns during the match, The Beast Incarnate put his former advocate through the announce table with an F-5.

Heyman sold the spot perfectly and has been kept off TV ever since in an effort to fully sell the effects of Lesnar's signature move.

As a result, Heyman was not in Reigns' corner for his match against McIntyre at Clash at the Castle in Cardiff, Wales. Reigns didn't have The Usos or Sami Zayn with him either since McIntyre took them out the night before on SmackDown.

It was the unexpected main roster debut of Sikoa that bailed Reigns out, seemingly adding another member to The Bloodline and strengthening it even more.

Heyman is an integral part of The Bloodline in his own right, and there is little doubt that his presence makes the overall presentation and entertainment value of the group even better.

Morgan Addresses Negative Crowd Reaction

Liv Morgan wasn't caught off guard when fans recently booed her following her win over Ronda Rousey at SummerSlam.

After Morgan won the Money in the Bank ladder match and successfully cashed in on Rousey to become SmackDown women's champion at the Money in the Bank pay-per-view, Morgan retained the title against Rousey at SummerSlam.

The finish was controversial, though, as Rousey's shoulders were counted down to the mat by the referee despite the fact that Morgan tapped out to an armbar just before the three count.

That led to Rousey attacking Morgan and the officials in a rage after the match.

On the ensuing episode of SmackDown, Morgan showed up with her arm in a sling and caught a promo in front of the live crowd, but she was met with some boos and a "you tapped out" chant despite being a babyface.

Speaking to Gorilla Position (h/t Mukherjee), Morgan divulged that the reaction didn't shock her, saying: "No, it didn't surprise me. I kind of weirdly anticipated it. But, in the same time, it kind of made me feel like I had a little bit of an edge because at the end of the day, the referee's decision is final and I'm still SmackDown women's champion."

A big part of the reason why Morgan won Money in the Bank and the SmackDown women's title seemed to be that there was an organic groundswell of support behind her from the WWE Universe.

Still, when a babyface isn't booked to look strong, it is often difficult to keep that support in place.

Morgan made amends at Clash at the Castle by scoring a clean victory over Shayna Baszler, but it remains to be seen if she will be able to regain the support she had back at Money in the Bank.

The 1 Looming Question for WWE and AEW for Rest of 2022

After one of the wildest weekends in recent wrestling history, WWE and All Elite Wrestling are moving forward through the rest of 2022 with several major questions left to be answered.

In AEW, the chaos that reigned following Sunday’s All Out pay-per-view and CM Punk’s comments during a press conference created a buzz around the company. As a result, many are asking if it can survive such a tumultuous time.

Meanwhile, WWE is carrying momentum after Triple H took control of creative and started bringing former Superstars back. Unfortunately, the terrible booking decision letting Roman Reigns beat Drew McIntyre nullified much of the goodwill from the WWE Universe.

Here are some of the looming questions in the industry for the rest of the year.

Will AEW Survive the Chaos?

Following a successful All Out, Punk went on a tirade that took aim at several of the biggest names in the company, including Adam Page, Kenny Omega and Matt and Nick Jackson.

According to the Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer, a physical altercation occurred between Punk, Omega, The Young Bucks and producer Ace Steel. The report also claimed some or all of the people involved were suspended by AEW President Tony Khan.

While everyone is talking about AEW, there are serious questions about how the company recovers from a major spat that included the world champion and three executive vice presidents. Add in the fact that all of the aforementioned talents had their titles stripped shows just how serious the situation has become.

Whatever actually happened behind the scenes, this is far from an isolated incident in wrestling, which has been plagued by giant egos and physical altercations—either confirmed or rumored—for years.

From Bret Hart punching Vince McMahon after the Montreal Screwjob to the Plane Ride from Hell to Booker T and Batista throwing hands backstage, confrontations are not uncommon. While a physical altercation should not be acceptable, it won’t be the end of AEW as we know it.

The key will be Khan regaining control of his company and its roster. Once he establishes a clearer set of protocols and expectations, and squashes any beef between the parties involved backstage, he should turn this into a storyline and capitalize on the attention.

With fans leaning into storylines that blend reality with kayfabe, AEW could take this situation and turn it into the best angle since the company’s current world champ took his title and "left" WWE during the Summer of Punk.

Not only will AEW survive the chaos, but the company will also be stronger because of it.

Who Will Defeat Roman Reigns?

Triple H has made several positive changes to WWE programming since taking over for Vince McMahon, but the company made an unforgivable mistake when it let Reigns retain his title over McIntyre in Cardiff, Wales on Saturday night.

Instead of cementing the Scot as a top star and moving into the fall with him holding the undisputed titles, he will be cast aside to a midcard feud while Reigns and his stale storyline continue to drag on through the rest of 2022.

So, who has the momentum and clout needed to dethrone the champion?

There are a number of Superstars on the roster who have the support of the WWE Universe who could conceivably beat Reigns with the proper push, such as Braun Strowman, Kevin Owens or even Seth Rollins. Unfortunately, none of them feel like they’re worthy of taking the title as things stand.

With that in mind, the answer to who will take the title from The Tribal Chief may be someone not currently on the active roster. While fans fear the name Goldberg in a situation like this, the reality is that WWE could look at WrestleMania 39 in Los Angeles and book The Rock as the man who ends Reigns’ run at the top.

Rumors have run rampant that The Great One would return to WWE for the marquee event, and the speculation is that he would challenge Reigns for his claim to be the leader of the Anoa'i family.

A bout between the two family members doesn’t need the belts on the line, but Triple H and WWE Creative have seemingly made the choice to keep the championship around Reigns’ waist for the foreseeable future.

If the company leaves the title on him until WrestleMania, his part-time schedule means the next several months of WWE programming are going to be monotonous and repetitive.

WWE's Ronda Rousey Comments on Pairing with Paul Heyman Following Criticism

WWE Superstar Ronda Rousey has significant interest in an on-screen alliance with Paul Heyman in the future.

Speaking last week on The Baddest Stream on the Planet (h/t WrestlingInc's Kenny Herzog), Rousey made multiple comments on her admiration for Heyman and her desire to work with him:

When asked a question about undisputed WWE universal champion Roman Reigns, Rousey said she is "very jealous" that he has Heyman as his advocate. Rousey later said she would "without a doubt, without hesitation" be in favor of Heyman managing her.

Rousey being under Heyman's advisement is something many fans have fantasy booked over the years, especially because of the success that the likes of Brock Lesnar and Reigns have enjoyed with Heyman by their side.

There are few, if any, better orators in the history of professional wrestling than Heyman, and he could help Rousey significantly in that regard since mic work is considered the weakest aspect of her skill set.

Shortly after Rousey's return to WWE in the 2022 women's Royal Rumble match, it was reported by Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio (h/t WrestlingInc's Matthew Wilkinson) in February that Rousey had to be pulled aside and spoken to by WWE officials about her promo work.

Rousey has been gaining some momentum recently thanks to a change in attitude that has curried her favor with the WWE Universe.

After losing the SmackDown Women's Championship to Liv Morgan at Money in the Bank, Rousey also lost a rematch at SummerSlam. Following that bout, she attacked Morgan and a referee.

That resulted in a storyline fine and suspension for Rousey, but she has been wreaking havoc ever since, taking out security guards and WWE official Adam Pearce, and even getting arrested on an episode of SmackDown.

Heyman is busy with Reigns and The Bloodline currently, but if there comes a time when Reigns decides to take an extended hiatus, Heyman and Rousey working together could be mutually beneficial, and it would perhaps lead to Rousey having her most interesting run in WWE yet.

WWE's Drew McIntyre Will Be 'Knocking on The Rock’s Door' After Loss to Roman Reigns

Drew McIntyre mentioned a potential confrontation with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson following his loss to The Rock's cousin, WWE universal champion Roman Reigns, at Clash at the Castle on Saturday.

McIntyre faced Reigns in the main event of Saturday's show in Cardiff, Wales, which marked the first WWE main roster pay-per-view in the United Kingdom in nearly 20 years and the first UK stadium show in 30 years.

Scotland's McIntyre had the crowd firmly in his favor and seemed to be on the verge of ending Reigns' historic two-year run as champion, but his dreams screeched to a halt when NXT Superstar Solo Sikoa interfered, allowing Reigns to retain.

Sikoa is the cousin of Reigns and the brother of WWE tag team champions The Usos, and he ensured Reigns' victory despite none of The Usos, Paul Heyman or Sami Zayn being present.

In the post-event press conference (h/t Subhojeet Mukherjee of Ringside News), McIntyre discussed the match and his plans for the future:

"Like I said, without the backup he belongs to me and it was very much a bit physical back-and-forth, but he very much belonged to me. And the crowd was very much in my corner and I loved every second of it until the inevitable. He's always got something up his freaking sleeve or Paul Heyman gifts him something or the family gifts him something. You know how big the family is. I mean, we're gonna have to start going door to door around the world and pay some visits. So I don't know, Hollywood here I come, I'll be knocking on The Rock's door soon."

To McIntyre's point, Reigns has received a great deal of help during his time as champion from those close to him, and it appears as though Sikoa is the latest addition to The Bloodline.

McIntyre seemed to insinuate that Reigns would be willing to enlist the help of anyone in his family, including one of the greatest WWE Superstars of all time in The Rock.

Reigns and The Rock haven't had any on-screen interactions since The Tribal Chief turned heel, became champion and began the greatest run of his career two years ago, however, so it is anyone's guess how The Rock would react to him.

Most are assuming that if and when The Rock returns to WWE programming, it will be in opposition of Reigns and in an effort to set up a match between them, perhaps as soon as WrestleMania 39 next year in Inglewood, California.

Reigns vs. The Rock is the match that most wrestling fans seemingly want to see, but if The Rock is up for more than one more match in his wrestling career, McIntyre wouldn't be a bad choice given his stature, popularity and issues with Reigns.
