DeMar DeRozan, Zach LaVine Lead Bulls Past Trae Young, Hawks for 4th Straight Win

The Chicago Bulls keep finding ways to win. The Atlanta Hawks can't seem to find any consistency this season.

Led by the dynamic duo of Zach LaVine and DeMar DeRozan, the Bulls knocked off Atlanta 130-118 on Monday night.

There wasn't much Atlanta could do against a Bulls team that shot 18-of-37 from three (48.6 percent) and had 29 assists on 51 made field goals.

Chicago (21-10) has now won four games in a row and eight of its last 10, while the Hawks (15-18) find themselves in a 4-9 stretch dating back to late November.

The Bulls and Hawks took very different approaches to the offseason. The Bulls, who missed the playoffs last year, were extremely busy in the summer, adding players like DeRozan, Lonzo Ball and Alex Caruso, among others.

The Hawks kept their young core intact, meanwhile, after surprisingly reaching the Eastern Conference Finals.

Both approaches made sense. But at least for the moment, the Bulls and Hawks are moving in opposite directions.

Key Stats

Zach LaVine, CHI: 30 points, nine assists

DeMar DeRozan, CHI: 35 points, 10 assists, five rebounds

Nikola Vucevic, CHI: 24 points, 17 rebounds, six assists

Trae Young, ATL: 29 points, nine assists

Cam Reddish, ATL: 33 points

Bogdan Bogdanovic, ATL: 20 points

LaVine And DeRozan Were en Fuego

When your two best players combine to shoot 25-of-41 from the field and 7-of-10 from three, post 65 combined points and dish 19 combined assists, well, you're going to be tough to beat.

Put simply, LaVine and DeRozan were awesome Monday night. Just awesome.

It was DeRozan's ninth 30-point game of the season and LaVine's 10th. DeRozan also had his first double-double of the year. They were so good that they made Nikola  Vucevic's monster night a virtual afterthought.

There's a reason the Bulls have been one of the top teams in the NBA this season, and it starts with this duo. On a night when Chicago didn't have Ball or Caruso available, LaVine and DeRozan put on an absolute show.

Reddish More Than Did His Part

For the second time in the past four games, Reddish eclipsed the 30-point mark. He made a career-high eight threes. He did his best to give Young a running mate to keep up with the red-hot pair of LaVine and DeRozan on a night when the Hawks were short-handed.

Ultimately, the Hawks came up short. That isn't on Reddish, though.

It's fair to question his future in Atlanta given the team's stockpile of talented wings and need for a true star next to Young. But if nothing else, he sure is increasing his trade value by the day.

Well, if the Hawks dare to trade him at this point, that is.

What's Next?

These teams meet again in Chicago on Wednesday at 8 p.m. ET.

Fans at Madison Square Garden didn't forget about Trae Young, even though the Atlanta Hawks star wasn't available for the Christmas Day game against the New York Knicks.

Late in the fourth quarter of the Knicks' 101-87 win over the Hawks, fans broke out a "f--k Trae Young" chant.

Young tweeted about the New York City fans acknowledging him, despite not being in the building:

Young joined an illustrious group of NBA players who have drawn the ire of Knicks fans thanks to his antics last postseason.

After hitting the game-winning shot in the final seconds of Game 1 in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs, Young put his finger to his mouth and was seen mouthing "it's quiet as f--k in here" to the MSG crowd.

Knicks fans responded in Game 2 by breaking out a "f--k Trae Young" chant in the final seconds of New York's 101-92 victory.

That would be the last celebratory moment for the Knicks and their fans during the 2020-21 season. Young led the Hawks to three straight victories to send New York home. He dropped 36 points in the decisive Game 5 at Madison Square Garden.

Young missed his third straight game on Saturday due to health and safety protocols. The 23-year-old will have a chance to address Knicks fans in person when the Hawks return to New York on March 22.

Atlanta Hawks star Trae Young did not clear the NBA's COVID-19 health and safety protocols in time to play Saturday's Christmas Day road game against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden.

Sarah K. Spencer of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution shared the team's list of players who will be sidelined:

Young has been durable in the early portion of his career and appeared in at least 60 games in each of his first three seasons, even though two of them were shortened from the traditional 82-game schedule.

The 23-year-old is one of the league's top rising young stars and led the Hawks to the Eastern Conference Finals last season while averaging 25.3 points, 9.4 assists and 3.9 rebounds per game.

The Oklahoma product has followed up with averages of 27.3 points and 9.3 assists through 29 appearances in 2021-22.

Young is the on-floor leader for Atlanta, and it will be hard-pressed to compete with the best teams in the league if he isn't healthy. Bogdan Bogdanovic and John Collins figure to be the Hawks' offensive focal points in his absence.

Hawks' Trae Young Reportedly Entered into NBA's COVID-19 Protocols

Atlanta Hawks star Trae Young is reportedly the latest big-name NBA player to enter the league's health and safety protocols.

On Sunday, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported Young was placed in the COVID-19 protocols.

Young played in Friday's 133-115 loss to the Denver Nuggets.

Atlanta was scheduled to host the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday, but Wojnarowski reported the game was postponed because Cleveland did not have enough available players.

Wojnarowski noted Jarrett Allen and four other Cavaliers entered the league's health and safety protocols.

The 23-year-old Young tweeted Saturday that he hoped people stayed healthy amid the latest COVID-19 outbreak as the omicron variant spreads and makes headlines across the world:

He also tweeted following Sunday's news:

Young has appeared in all 29 of Atlanta's games this season and is averaging 27.3 points, 9.3 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 1.0 steals a night while shooting 46.0 percent from the field and 37.7 percent from three-point range.

He is a major reason the Hawks reached the Eastern Conference Finals last season and were seen as contenders coming into the 2021-22 campaign. They are on the outside of the playoff picture looking in at 14-15, and they are just 2-5 in their past seven games.

If Young is sidelined, look for Delon Wright and Lou Williams to see more playing time in ball-handling roles in the backcourt.

In the sports world, COVID-19 concerns have once again risen to the forefront. The NFL moved multiple games in its Week 15 slate in an effort to have them contested, even with so many players on the league's COVID list. What's more, the NHL and NBA have postponed multiple games.

According to a tracker from James Herbert of CBS Sports, Young is the only player on the Hawks in health and safety protocols as of Sunday morning.

Kevin Durant Pours in 31 as Nets Outlast Trae Young, Hawks

The Brooklyn Nets are now 2-0 against the Hawks this year after defeating Atlanta 113-105 on Friday night at State Farm Arena to move to 18-8 for the season, the best record in the Eastern Conference.

The win comes after a disappointing 114-104 loss to the Houston Rockets on Wednesday without Kevin Durant. Regardless, Brooklyn has now won seven of its last 10 games and is on a roll.

Notable Stats

Kevin Durant, PF, BKN: 31 PTS, 5 REB, 6 AST, 1 STL, 3 BLK

Trae Young, PG, ATL: 31 PTS, 7 REB, 10 AST 2 STL

James Harden, SG, BKN: 20 PTS, 5 REB, 11 AST

Kevin Huerter, SG, ATL: 19 PTS, 3 REB, 3 AST, 2 STL

Kevin Durant Thrives in Big Minutes

Durant had a tremendous game on Friday night after missing Wednesday's contest against the Houston Rockets to get some extra rest.

The 33-year-old has been used heavily this season, entering Friday's game against the Hawks having played 36.2 minutes per night, the highest he's averaged since the 2013-14 season. He played 38 minutes against Atlanta but didn't appear to be fatigued.

Durant opened up the first quarter with 12 points, two rebounds, one assist and two blocks before adding five points and two assists in the second quarter. He shot 8-of-10 from the floor in the first half and made his only attempt from deep.

Durant continued his impressive evening in the third quarter, putting up six points, one rebound and three assists before closing out the game with eight points, two rebounds and a block in the fourth quarter.

Bruce Brown was impressive off the bench, finishing with 15 points, five rebounds, one assist and one steal.

While Durant played big minutes, he has no problem doing so, telling reporters last Saturday, "I'm a basketball player. I want to play 48 minutes. That's just what it is."

If he maintains that mentality moving forward, the Nets will be in good hands.

Trae Young's Effort Not Enough

Young is the most important part of the Atlanta offense. He continued to prove that on Friday night, and he started hot. The rising star finished the first quarter with six points, one rebound and four assists before adding eight points, two rebounds and three assists in the second frame.

https://twitter.com/ATLHawks/status/1469484316019204096

Young continued his big night in the second half, adding 17 points, four rebounds and three assists.

Young's ability to make plays was on full display on Friday night as he finished with 10 assists. It was certainly a much better performance in comparison to the Hawks' first matchup of the season against the Nets on Nov. 3. The 23-year-old finished with 21 points, nine rebounds and 10 assists in that game.

Friday's game was Young's fifth consecutive game with at least 25 points and 10-plus assists. He is the first player in Hawks history to accomplish the feat and the first in the NBA since Russell Westbrook did so in 2017, per Hawks Public Relations

Kevin Huerter also had an impressive game. Through the 6:51 mark of the third quarter, he had made four of his six three-point attempts and five of his nine field-goal attempts for 14 points.

It was a bounce-back performance from Huerter, who finished Monday's game against the Timberwolves with just 10 points. But while Young and Huerter were solid on Friday night, the Hawks needed much more production out of Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot, who finished with zero points, four rebounds, one assist and one steal in 31 minutes.

The Hawks also finally got Cam Reddish back on Friday after a four-game absence with a wrist injury. While he played off the bench, finishing with four points and two assists, he should return to a more regular role in the future.

What's Next?

The Nets will be on the road to take on the Detroit Pistons on Sunday, while the Hawks will host the Houston Rockets on Monday.

Joel Embiid Drops 28, Late Go-Ahead Bucket as 76ers Outlast Trae Young, Hawks

The Philadelphia 76ers bounced back from an 88-87 loss to the Boston Celtics on Wednesday with a 98-96 win over the Atlanta Hawks at State Farm Arena on Friday night.

Philly had lost three of its last four games entering Friday's contest, and Joel Embiid played an important role in helping the team get back on track. With the win, the Sixers improved to 12-11 on the season.

Notable Stats

Joel Embiid, C, PHI: 28 PTS, 14 REB, 4 AST, 1 STL, 2 BLK

Seth Curry, SG, PHI: 18 PTS, 2 REB, 5 AST, 1 STL

Trae Young, PG, ATL: 25 PTS, 4 REB, 10 AST, 1 BLK

Trae Young Continues to Impress Despite Loss

Young will always be a topic of discussion when the Hawks play, and he was arguably the best player on the court on Friday night. The 23-year-old opened up the first quarter with six points, two rebounds, three assists and one block, which led the team.

He added another eight points and two assists in the second quarter. However, Danilo Gallinari was Atlanta's most effective scorer just before halftime, notching nine points off the bench to close out the half.

https://twitter.com/ATLHawks/status/1466948599309168641

Young continued his dominance in the third quarter, adding seven points, two rebounds and five assists before closing things out in the fourth quarter with just four points.

The former All-Star entered Friday night's game having scored at least 30 points in each of his last five games, tied for the longest streak of his fledgling career.

Young continues to have a significant impact for Atlanta, averaging 26.3 points, 9.1 assists, and 3.8 rebounds per game while shooting 46.6 percent from the field and 38.8 percent from deep entering Friday's game.

If the Oklahoma product continues to play well, the Hawks could become one of the most dangerous teams in the Eastern Conference. Though they fell just short against the 76ers, strong performances from John Collins and Gallinari were promising signs that the team has the pieces to build upon their surprising conference finals run last season.

Joel Embiid Helps Lead Fourth Quarter Comeback

While Embiid is still very clearly trying to find his footing after missing nine games with COVID-19, the veteran big man had an impressive performance.

The 27-year-old opened up the game with eight points, five rebounds and one assist.

However, Embiid wasn't as effective in the second quarter, putting up just four points, one rebound and an assist just before halftime.

Embiid continued his impressive night into the third quarter, putting up 10 points, four rebounds, one assist and a block before finishing the fourth quarter with six points, two rebounds and an assist.

His most important play came with just under 43 seconds left in the fourth quarter and the score tied at 96. Embiid pulled up from 13 feet and hit the jumper over Clint Capela to give the 76ers a lead they would never relinquish.

All things considered, Embiid had a great night after hitting just 21.2 percent of field goal attempts over the last two games.

While Embiid was impressive on Friday, the Sixers needed more out of Tyrese Maxey and Danny Green despite the win. The duo combined for 21 points, six rebounds and five assists.

Granted, Philadelphia was without Tobias Harris with a non-COVID-19-related illness. The 29-year-old has been averaging 19.1 points, 8.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game while shooting 47.6 percent from the field. Nonetheless, it was a gritty victory for a 76ers team missing one of their best players.

What's Next?

The Hawks will host the Hornets on Sunday, and the Sixers will be on the road again to face Charlotte on Monday.

Trae Young, Draymond Green Headline 3rd Update to NBA 2K22 Player Ratings

Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young and Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green were among the players to have their overall rating increased in the latest NBA 2K22 update.

2K Sports announced Friday that Young's rating was increased one point to 90, while Green jumped three points to 83:

Search every roster in the NBA and you'll be hard-pressed to find a player with a higher basketball IQ than Draymond Green. For many years, Green played the role of the enforcer for the Warriors, and in many ways he still does. But now more than ever, the former Michigan State Spartan is facilitating and orchestrating head coach Steve Kerr's system to perfection. Statistically, Green won't blow you away with his numbers, but his value isn't in the stat sheet. Even without Klay Thompson to start the 2021-2022 campaign, Green and Steph Curry have hoisted the Warriors to a sterling record of 18-3, and look like title contenders.

New York Knicks forward Julius Randle headlined the players who saw their overall rating drop in the video game's new update. He fell two points to an 84.

Young has carried the Hawks offense in the early stages of the 2021-22 season. He ranks fourth in the NBA in scoring (26.3 PPG) and third in assists (9.1) while shooting a career-best 38.8 percent from three-point range.

The 2018 fifth overall pick is also on quite a roll as of late with five consecutive games with at least 30 points as Atlanta starts to climb the Eastern Conference standings.

Green has taken on a complementary offensive role for the Warriors in recent years, a trend that's continued this season as he's averaging 8.2 points, but there are still few players who make a larger all-around impact. He's the Dubs' defensive stalwart while also helping run the offense.

The 31-year-old Michigan State product has averaged 8.0 rebounds, 7.7 assists, 1.1 steals and 0.9 blocks while shooting 55.1 percent from the field in 20 appearances this season.

Meanwhile, Randle has taken a slight step back from his breakout 2020-21 season, but he's still playing a critical role for the Knicks. He's putting up 19.9 points, 10.2 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game amid the team's 11-11 start.

2K Sports predicted a bounce back from the 2021 All-Star:

Since arriving in the Big Apple, Julius Randle has been the King of New York—but lately the Knicks have struggled. Randle is oozing with talent and is a proven playmaker, so his rating deduction says more about the current state of the Knicks, rather than a major drop off in his game. Head coach Tom Thibodeau is experimenting with the lineup at the moment, but fans should expect Randle and company to get back on track soon.

NBA 2K22 was released in September and is available on PC, PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch.

Hawks' Trae Young Received 1 Vote in Election for Mayor of New York City

Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young received one write-in vote in November's election for the next mayor of New York City, a race won by Democrat Eric Adams.

ESPN's Jeremy Willis reported Young was one of several sports figures to have their names placed on an NYC mayor ballot. Here were some of the others:

  • Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge (nine votes)
  • Knicks forward Julius Randle (six)
  • Knicks forward RJ Barrett (three)
  • Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau (three)
  • Knicks guard Kemba Walker (one)
  • Nets guard Kyrie Irving (one)
  • Nets forward Kevin Durant (one)
  • Nets guard James Harden (one)

Winning the election as New York City's new mayor and removing the COVID-19 vaccine mandate for large-scale events would have been one way for Irving to resume his NBA career. He came up a couple hundred thousand votes short.

Meanwhile, Young has built an entertaining rivalry with Knicks fans, highlighted by the teams' first-round matchup in last season's playoffs.

The 23-year-old Texas native gestured to the Madison Square Garden crowd after hitting a game-winning shot in Game 1 of the series:

He then took a bow after scoring 36 points in Game 5 to eliminate the Knicks:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-mgiRngirdE

Young returned to MSG in September as a surprise guest of WWE wrestler Sami Zayn.

While the All-Star guard is probably too busy to handle the mayoral duties in the country's most populous city, his returns to The Garden have become must-see events.

The next one comes during the NBA's annual Christmas Day slate of games on Dec. 25.

It takes two. All right, actually, in the NBA , it takes way more than two players to do anything. But duos are all the rage, more so than even trios, if only because they're not as rare...
