Reigning Masters champion Dustin Johnson will kick off his defense of the green jacket Thursday at 10:30 a.m. ET at Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia.

Johnson was a wire-to-wire winner of the 2020 Masters, holding a share of the lead after the first two rounds before pulling away over the weekend to win the tournament by five strokes. Last year's event was held in November because of the coronavirus pandemic, but it returns to its usual April time slot for 2021.

Here's a look at some of the notable pairings and their tee times for the first two rounds of the 2021 Masters, which were released Tuesday (all times Eastern):

10:06 a.m./1:12 p.m.: Bubba Watson, Brooks Koepka, Viktor Hovland

10:30 a.m./1:35 p.m.: Dustin Johnson, Lee Westwood, Tyler Strafaci

10:42 a.m./1:48 p.m.: Xander Schauffele, Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy

1:36 p.m./10:30 a.m.: Adam Scott, Bryson DeChambeau, Max Homa

1:48 p.m./10:42 a.m.: Tony Finau, Louis Oosthuizen, Justin Thomas

2 p.m./10:54 a.m.: Jordan Spieth, Cameron Smith, Collin Morikawa

Johnson will attempt to fend off a long list of challengers for this season's first major title.

While the 36-year-old South Carolina native dominated the field, Bryson DeChambeau disappointed to finish in a distant tie for 34th. It raised further questions about whether the famed course can be tamed when the focus is just on raw power and distance.

DeChambeau remains confident, however, saying the "stress of the tournament" and poor play in areas other than the tee box were to blame for his mediocre performance in November.

"I look at Augusta ... there were plenty of opportunities that I missed with wedging, putting and iron play," he told reporters. "I wouldn't say it was necessarily the driver that got me into trouble for the most part, but definitely there were times where my putter and my wedges and my iron play did."

Jordan Spieth is the other player generating plenty of buzz heading into the Masters coming off his victory in the Valero Texas Open.

Spieth's play had dropped off in recent years—his win in last week's event was his first since the 2017 Open Championship—but he's showed signs of a return to top form this season with top-five finishes in three other events before the breakthrough in Texas.

"When you're coming in form, it's a good feeling when you arrive here, and I've had that a few times,'' Spieth said. "I love being here. I love being on the grounds. It's my favorite tournament in the world. I've expressed that many times here."

Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm and Brooks Koepka, who's making his first start since knee surgery, are among the other top contenders in the star-studded field.

Jordan Spieth: 'Good Feeling' to Enter Masters After Win at Valero Texas Open

Jordan Spieth told reporters that it's a "good feeling" to go into the Masters in good form off his win at the Valero Texas Open on Sunday.

"When you're coming in form, it's a good feeling when you arrive here, and I've had that a few times," Spieth said.

"I love being here. I love being on the grounds. It's my favorite tournament in the world. I've expressed that many times here.

"Yesterday [at the Texas Open] was a great day. That was a lot of fun being in contention, having the putts kind of go in. As I've mentioned over the last six weeks or so, you put yourself in that position enough times, the bounces will go your way."

Spieth shot 18 under for the tournament, holding off second-place finisher Charley Hoffman by two strokes. The victory marked Spieth's first professional win since the 2017 Open Championship.

The three-time major winner and 12-time PGA Tour title victor struggled with his form from 2018 to 2020, but he's rounding into great shape at the right time in 2021.

He's finished fourth or better in four of his last six stroke-play competitions. The 27-year-old also made the round of 16 in the WGC-Dell Match Play tournament.

Spieth now heads to Augusta National Golf Club looking for his second green jacket. He won in 2015 by shooting 18 under, which tied the 72-hole tournament record with Tiger Woods at the time.

That mark has since been broken by Dustin Johnson, who shot 20 under at the Masters last November.

Jordan Spieth Discusses 'Monumental Win' at 2021 Valero Texas Open

Welcome back, Jordan Spieth.

The former No. 1 golfer in the world clinched a two-shot victory at the 2021 Valero Texas Open on Sunday, which marked his first win on the PGA Tour since 2017.

"There's peaks and valleys in this sport, but I never expected to go this long," Spieth told reporters while calling it a "monumental win." "Back then, in between wins, maybe I took things more for granted than I should have. It's very difficult to win out here and I'll certainly enjoy this one as much as I have any other."

While it has been a while since Spieth actually won a tournament, it seemed like just a matter of time until he finally did.

After all, he tied for fourth at the Waste Management Open, tied for third at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, tied for fourth at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and tied for ninth at the World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play all within the last two months.

Charley Hoffman made him work for the win with a six-under 66 to move to 16 under for the tournament, but Spieth also shot six under to notch the two-stroke victory.

Spieth didn't have a single bogey to go with three birdies on the back nine to hold off Hoffman and the rest of the field.

Next up for the 27-year-old is the Masters, where he will look to continue his momentum at the iconic Augusta National Golf Club.

He has enjoyed plenty of success at the venue with a victory in 2015, a tie for second place in 2014 and 2016, and a third-place finish in 2018.

If he plays like he did at the Valero Open, Spieth will likely be in contention Sunday.

For the first time in nearly four years, Jordan Spieth is a PGA Tour winner.

After entering Sunday with a share of the lead, Spieth staved off a late effort from Charley Hoffman and held on for his 12th PGA Tour victory, finishing the Valero Texas Open at 18 under.

The win was a long time coming for the 27-year-old Texas native, who hadn't won on the PGA Tour since he claimed The Open Championship in 2017.

Despite the drought, the victory put him in legendary company.

Spieth entered Sunday in a tie for the lead with England's Matt Wallace, with both players sitting at 12 under. Through the front nine, Wallace managed to maintain that score, offsetting his birdie on No. 2 with a bogey on No. 4, but Spieth improved his starting score by three strokes.

While he bogeyed No. 4, he posted two straight birdies on Nos. 2 and 3 before adding two more on later holes.

Wallace's drop also paved the way for Charley Hoffman, who entered the day at 10 under, to move up to second place by going three under on the front nine, setting the stage for a different showdown than it looked like would be taking place at the start of Sunday.

Around the turn, Spieth and Hoffman went shot-for-shot until the 12th hole, when Spieth birdied to increase the distance by one. Hoffman got him back on the next hole.

Things tightened back up on No. 16, as Spieth managed a putt for par moments after Hoffman birdied to get within one.

But Spieth held him off with a birdie on No. 17 to go to the final hole with a two-stroke lead, eventually sealing the deal with a par.

Having finally broken his winless spell, Spieth will look to become the first player since Phil Mickelson (2006) to win both the Masters and the tournament leading up to it.

Valero Texas Open 2021: Jordan Spieth, Matt Wallace Tied for Lead After Round 3

Less than a week before golf's biggest stars take the stage at The Masters, Jordan Spieth's hot start to the 2021 season continued Saturday at the Valero Texas Open where he's found himself tied with Matt Wallace for the lead at 12 under.

Wallace and Spieth both shot a 67, breaking a three-way tie with Charley Hoffman late in the afternoon to move two strokes ahead of the field.

The Texas native is seeking his first PGA Tour victory since taking The Open Championship in 2017. For Spieth to pick it up only days before he's set to arrive in Augusta, Georgia, would count as another breakthrough moment for a player who was previously considered golf's next major star. At 27 years old, Spieth could still live up to those lofty expectations.

Closing out a victory at the Texas Open would go a long way toward doing so.

Here's a look at where things stand heading into Sunday's action.

Recap

Spieth was nothing short of spectacular Saturday, sinking six birdies on one bogey—including five birdies over his last seven holes to end the round.

To get there, Spieth made 72 percent of his greens in regulation with an average drive of 317.1 yards. Nowhere were those numbers more important to back up than on the par-four No. 17, where his drive went 334 yards and landed in the native area. Spieth recovered with an absolutely perfect approach, landing less than three feet to the cup for a quick tap-in.

The only thing that stopped Spieth from running away with first place Saturday was the play of Wallace. The 30-year-old from England went shot-for-shot with Spieth over the last four holes after picking up his lone bogey on the par-four No. 11.

Before those two began their duel, it looked like Hoffman—who won the Valero Texas Open in 2016—would end the day with at least a share of the lead after shooting a 65. That was enough to move Hoffman up 11 spots but not enough to keep him in first place.

Still, it's hard to be upset with where Hoffman stands heading into the final round. He sank one eagle, six birdies and just one bogey on the day, posting a score 10 strokes better than his opening round of 75. Hoffman made 94 percent of his greens in regulation and let his short game do the rest of the work.

It was a strong, though less-than-stellar, day for Cameron Tringale, who posted his first round above 70 all weekend after shooting 66 and 69 over the first two days of play. That dropped him from first to fourth and four strokes back of the lead.

Sunday will feature an intense showdown between a few likely contenders at Augusta next week. As far a tune-ups go, the PGA Tour has plenty to be excited about before the main event begins at The Masters.

Cameron Tringale leads the Valero Open field by two strokes after shooting a three-under 69 on Friday to move to nine under for the tournament at TPC San Antonio.

Jordan Spieth and Matt Wallace are tied for second at seven under, and 10 golfers are within three strokes of them.

Tringale, who carded a six-under 66 on Thursday, continued his good play after starting his round on the 10th hole.

The Californian's day didn't begin well thanks to a pair of bogeys, but a string of five birdies from the 13th through 17th holes pushed that start into the rearview mirror.

He shot even par on the front nine to finish his round, and that was good enough for a two-shot cushion going into Saturday.

The winner of the Valero Open will qualify for the Masters (provided the victor does not have a spot already). Tringale does not have a place in the field, so for now, the 33-year-old is in line to land an invitation to Augusta National Golf Club next week.

Wallace and Spieth are Tringale's top challengers for the Valero Open title. Wallace posted a four-birdie, bogey-free second round, with two birdies each on the front and back nine.

Spieth, who shot five under on Thursday, went two under on Friday. He started his round with back-to-back birdies but fell to even par in Round 2 after bogeys on Nos. 11 and 13. The two-time Masters winner bounced back with birdies on the 14th and 15th to pull into a second-place tie with Wallace.

Elsewhere, Brandt Snedeker and Lucas Glover each shot five-under 67. Snedeker is tied for fourth at five under, and Glover is four under. Snedeker posted one of the day's best shots with this hole-out for eagle on No. 8:

Another notable name playing this weekend is Rickie Fowler, who needs to win the Valero Open to make the Masters field. He shot four under Friday during a bogey-free round but has some work to do following a four-over Thursday:

The round of the day went to Charley Hoffman, as he went from being in serious danger to missing the cut to potentially putting himself in contention for a weekend run at the title with a six-under 66. He's now three under.

First-round leader Camilo Villegas, who posted the tournament's best round with an eight-under 64 on Thursday, shot four over to fall back to a tie for eighth. He had two birdies and six bogeys on the day.

The cut line landed at two over, and some notable names will not be moving on, including Tony Finau (three over), Zach Johnson (three over), Danny Willett (three over), Henrik Stenson (four over), Phil Mickelson (four over) and Jason Dufner (nine over).

Golf Channel will pick up television coverage of the third round beginning Saturday at 1 p.m. ET. NBC will take over at 3:30 p.m.

Spieth set the tone early on with a five-under 67. Opening on the 10th tee, he was three under through his first five holes and continued to play well over the remainder of his round. A bogey on No. 9 did end Spieth's day on a sour note, though.

Because he teed off at 8:09 a.m. CT, the 27-year-old Texan could only watch and hope his score would hold up as more golfers filled up the leaderboard Thursday.

Matsuyama briefly claimed the lead with a birdie on No. 14, leaving himself with time to widen his lead on the rest of the field. The Japanese was unable to capitalize on the opportunity after bogeying No. 16.

Kang, on the other hand, caught fire as his round drew to a close. He birdied three of his final four holes to take sole possession of second place. No matter what happens from here, the 33-year-old is sitting pretty considering he missed the cut in his last three events. Barring a complete collapse Friday, the South Korean will be playing through the weekend.

Villegas immediately suffered a setback with a bogey on No. 10 to start his round. He quickly rebounded with a birdie on No. 11 and added birdies on the 14th, 17th and 18th holes.

A four-hole surge catapulted the 39-year-old Colombian into first place, and he wasn't far off from an eagle on No. 5 that would've put him at eight under. He wound up getting there anyway thanks to a birdie on No. 9 before heading to the clubhouse and turning in his scorecard.

Matt Kuchar (two under) is some distance back from Villegas but delivered one of the best two-shot sequences from the round.

Standing to the left of the cart path, he managed to get his approach onto the green on the par-five eighth hole. That still left him with a difficult 43-foot uphill putt for birdie, and he managed to find the bottom of the cup.

While Joel Dahmen is even further back at two over, he at least got to savor his tee shot on the par-three third hole. If his shot had landed a few feet to the right, Dahmen would've been celebrating an ace.

Phil Mickelson will generally want to put this day in his rear-view mirror.

Villegas is in the driver's seat for now, but plenty of challengers loom just below him. One such challenger is likely to garner more attention than most.

Despite his performance steadily declining following his dominant 2015 season, Spieth remains a big name on the PGA Tour. Fans inevitably get a bit excited when he's hovering near the top of the leaderboard.

However, there will likely be a level of cautious optimism about whether Spieth can remain in this position. Per PGATour.com, his 71.13 scoring average in the final round ranks 146th. He started strong in the Waste Management Phoenix Open, AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and Arnold Palmer Invitational before wilting on Sunday.

Perhaps Spieth can write a different story in his home state.

The 2021 Players Championship is underway at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

Play began at 6:45 a.m. ET. Alex Noren, Xinjun Zhang and Doug Ghim teed off from No. 1, while Kyle Stanley, Lucas Glover and Tyler McCumber opened their tournaments on the 10th tee.

Fans looking to following the action can do so on PGATour.com's live leaderboard. Golf Channel's television coverage begins at 12 p.m. ET and runs through 6 p.m. ET.

A lot of eyes will be on Bryson DeChambeau following his victory in the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

The 27-year-old showed off his incredible power at Bay Hill Club and Lodge, leading the tournament in driving distance (321.3 yards). His longest drive traveled 377 yards as he effectively bypassed the fairway on the par-five sixth hole.

DeChambeau's driving ability may not provide a decisive edge at TPC Sawgrass, though. He tied for 37th in the 2018 Players Championship and finished with a share of 20th the following year. During the 2019 Players Championship, he double-bogeyed No. 18 twice.

The PGA Tour also announced Tuesday it was eliminating any chance for him to take a shortcut to the green on the 18th:

For the first two rounds at least, Bryson DeChambeau will be grouped together with Dustin Johnson.

Johnson's track record in the Players isn't great, posting one top-10 finish in 10 tries. His last outing was a 54th-place finish in the WGC-Workday Championship last month.

Still, the blistering form Johnson enjoyed to close out 2020 illustrated how good he is when he's in a groove.

"Ball position was getting a little too far back, which causes me to hit it both ways," the 36-year-old told reporters of his performance in the WGC-Workday Championship. "It takes a little bit to work on that, but I fixed it and feel pretty good over the driver now."

Jordan Spieth tied for fourth in his first try at the 2014 Players Championship. Since then, he has four missed cuts and a 41st-place showing in 2018.

The Arnold Palmer Invitational was emblematic of Spieth's season. Entering the final round, he was two shots back of tournament leader Lee Westwood. Then unraveled over the last 18 holes, carding a three-over 75.

Spieth is in a featured group alongside Patrick Reed and Jon Rahm. Perhaps the 27-year-old can turn things around in Ponte Vedra Beach, but history would indicate that won't be the case.
