Karim Benzema Salvages a Point for Real Madrid in 1-1 La Liga Draw vs. Valencia

Dec 15, 2019

Karim Benzema struck a 95th-minute equaliser as Real Madrid failed to go clear at the top of La Liga on Sunday, when Valencia held Zinedine Zidane's side to a 1-1 draw at the Mestalla.

Carlos Soler punished Valencia's guests with his breakthrough in the 78th minute after Real failed to exploit a torrent of first-half pressure, but Benzema found a dramatic equaliser in the fifth minute of injury time.

Los Blancos move back level on points with leaders Barcelona ahead of their Clasico clash in midweek, failing to capitalise on the Blaugrana's 2-2 draw away to Real Sociedad on Saturday.

Casemiro was dropped from Zidane's XI for the first time this season in favour of Federico Valverde, who retained his spot and started for the fourth time in Real's last five league outings.

Fellow Brazilians Vinicius Jr. and Eder Militao also started on the Real bench. Isco was preferred on Real's right flank, opposite Rodrygo Goes on the left of striker Karim Benzema.

Real dictated play for most of the first half and forced goalkeeper Jaume Domenech into a number of good saves, with Benzema and Rodrygo the most prominent in their early attempts.

The midfield three of Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and Valverde looked at ease for the most part. Journalist Deji Faremi praised the more defensive components of that trio for their effect in restraining Los Che's attack:

Soler looked like one of Valencia's most creative assets going forward while Dani Parejo pulled strings from their core.

The main concern for Albert Celades' side was a lack of consistent ball, with most of their counter attempts stubbed out before they could move within range of Thibaut Courtois.

Real blogger Matt Wiltse felt the Real stopper could have had a more direct hand in his side's attack, as has come to be expected of the world's top goalkeepers in more recent times:

Valencia's 19-year-old striker, Ferran Torres, came closest to breaking the deadlock for the hosts and kept Zidane's defence on its toes:

Real boasted the great majority of possession at half-time, and it was again Valencia who struggled to build phases from the back and looked restricted to counters for the most part.

Celades' side nonetheless looked the better team for much of the second period, with Parejo conducting most of their moves from the middle and showing why he should perhaps start for Spain.

Vinicius and Bale replaced Rodrygo and Isco, respectively, after 70 minutes to offer a fresh approach on the left and right flanks, but it was Valencia who continued to look more likely scorers when they did threaten.

The best of the goalmouth drama was saved for late on, and Soler finally opened the scoring when he got on the end of a cute Daniel Wass pull-back across goal (UK and U.S. viewers only):

Valencia held on with gritted teeth and relied on the video assistant referee to correctly rule out Luka Jovic's would-be equaliser in the 93rd-minute.

Los Che attempted to slow the game but allowed Real into their half by doing so, and the resulting pressure ultimately became too much of a burden in defence.

Courtois came up for a corner deep into injury time and played his part in the goalmouth scramble that saw Benzema react fastest and rocket his effort into the top corner with seconds remaining (UK and U.S. only):

A deserved point could come to play a critical role in La Liga's title race come May, with veteran Benzema moving level with Lionel Messi at the top of the scoring charts following his 12th goal in the league.

Zidane's attacking substitutes eventually played their hand, though the manager will be frustrated his side were even made to chase the game considering the control they held for much of it.

Valencia (seventh) remain unbeaten in nine league games at the Mestalla this season, though they too will be kicking themselves having missed the chance to go level on points with Atletico Madrid in fifth.

What's Next?

Real travel to the Camp Nou on Wednesday to face rivals Barcelona in their first Clasico of the campaign, when they'll have a chance to move two points ahead at the summit. Valencia visit Real Valladolid on Saturday in Week 18.

Real Madrid face consecutive away days in La Liga, starting with a trip to Valencia on Sunday.

Zinedine Zidane's men will then venture to Barcelona on Wednesday for El Clasico. It represents a vital pair of matches for Madrid, who are tied on 34 points with Barca at the top of the table.

Los Blancos are undefeated in their last 10 in all competitions, but Valencia are also experiencing an encouraging run. The hosts have won three consecutive games, including the 1-0 UEFA Champions League win at Ajax that saw them qualify for the knockouts.

The 33-time Spanish champions arrive at the Mestalla Stadium in good form and chasing La Liga supremacy.

Zidane will have one eye on El Clasico, but the threat of Los Ches on their own patch is significant.

Recent history has been tumultuous for the Valencia. However, Albert Celades' team are in the groove before the turn of the year. The former Real player, who won two La Liga titles with Los Blancos, took the reins in September, and his impact has been impressive.

The club gained just one win in their first six, which led to Marcelino being dismissed as coach, but Celades has the driven the team back up the table.

Valencia were not expected to defeat Ajax on the final day of Champions League qualifying, but the victory saw the club achieve top spot in Group H above Chelsea, sending the Dutch giants into the UEFA Europa League.

The clean sheet at the Johan Cruyff Arena on Tuesday displayed Valencia's improving discipline, and with the top sides bunched together at the La Liga summit, the Oranges will believe they can burst into the top-four.

Real suffered their own early-season wobble after one win in three at the start of La Liga, but that's long forgotten after recent weeks.

Zidane's men have lost only one league game this season when they were edged out 1-0 by Mallorca in October.

With the trip to the Camp Nou on the horizon, Real might consider rotating their starting options before arriving in Catalonia.

Vinicius Jr. was drafted back into the starting XI after injury impacted Zidane's selection against Espanyol, and the 19-year-old was impressive as Real won 2-0 last weekend.

The youngster could get a further opportunity to shine against Valencia after scoring against Club Brugge in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Vinicius Jr. Rejects Real Madrid Exit Rumours: 'My Dream Is to Always Play Here'

Vinicius Jr. has intimated he intends to play at Real Madrid for the remainder of his career, dismissing talk of a loan departure by saying it's his dream to "always play" at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The 19-year-old moved to Real in July 2018 and played an important role in revitalising the team last season, but speculation of a move away has gathered pace following a slower 2019-20 campaign.

Vinicius spoke to reporters after scoring in a 3-1 UEFA Champions League win away to Club Brugge on Wednesday, insisting his sole target is to succeed with Los Blancos.

He said: "I want to stay, I have never thought about leaving Real Madrid. My dream is to always play here and make history. From last season with [Santiago] Solari to this one with [Zinedine] Zidane, nothing has changed, what happens is that we are now more complete players. Zidane has the support of everyone."

Discussion over Vinicius' place in the team has intensified since fellow Brazilian youngster Rodrygo debuted this season, making a greater impact early on at Real than his compatriot.

Zinedine Zidane fielded a second-string team at Club Brugge having already secured second place in Champions League Group A. Rodrygo, 18, bagged the opener before Vinicius joined in the scoring to make it 2-1 (U.S. viewers only):

Wednesday was the first time both Vinicius and Rodrygo have scored in the same fixture:

Vinicius—who has two goals and one assist in 13 games this season—is perhaps fortunate Marco Asensio suffered a serious knee injury in pre-season. The Spaniard would most likely be ahead in Zidane's pecking order, while Rodrygo's flying start in Madrid appears to have him in front of his countryman.

The player is beginning to find his place under Zidane:

Gareth Bale and Lucas Vazquez have also each endured injury troubles this season to free up competition on flanks, though Vinicius has only started once in Real's last six league games.

Rodrygo and Vinicius posed in celebration of their memorable night in Belgium on Wednesday:

Vinicius will hope to keep his place in Zidane's team when Real travel to the Mestalla to face Valencia on Sunday.

Los Blancos are hoping to carve out a lead at the top of La Liga before they travel to Barcelona on December 18, for the first Clasico of the season (and the last of this decade).

Zinedine Zidane Jokes Real Madrid Would 'Eliminate' Liverpool in UCL Last 16

Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has joked his team are ready to "eliminate" Liverpool in the next round of the UEFA Champions League, should the draw put them together.

Los Blancos had already secured their spot in the last 16 of the competition before their 3-1 win over Club Brugge on Wednesday. They finished in second place in Group A behind Paris Saint-Germain, opening up the prospect of a challenging tie in the knockout stages.

Speaking about to the media his side, Zidane said he would fancy their chances up against anyone, even defending champions and Premier League leaders Liverpool.

"If we play Liverpool, we will eliminate them," the Frenchman said when asked whether the Reds were the team to avoid. "We can't do anything about the draw."

The Merseyside outfit aren't the only difficult team that could come up against Los Blancos in the next round:

Zidane went on to reflect on the performance in Brugge, with Rodrygo, Vinicius Jr. and Luka Modric on the scoresheet for Madrid.

"We are happy with the victory and with the way we played," he said. "We had difficulty with our game since they usually play with five at the back and, today, they played with four. It took 10 or 15 minutes for the players to adjust. The second half was better in every area."

Here are the highlights from the encounter, in which Zidane made a number of changes to his usual starting lineup:

https://twitter.com/brlive/status/1204875467595096070
https://twitter.com/brlive/status/1204881847202844680

The group stage saw Madrid produce some inconsistent displays, and Zidane would have been particularly concerned by the 3-0 loss to PSG in Paris. However, there have been some signs of Madrid making improvements recently, and by the time the knockout stages come around, Zidane will be hoping Real are better equipped to deal with the rigours of European football.

While Zidane joked about the prospect of beating Liverpool, there's no doubt they are the side to avoid in the next round of the competition. Football writer Joel Rabinowitz praised the Reds after they qualified for the knockout phase with a win over Red Bull Salzburg on Tuesday:

In his time as manager at Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp has never lost a two-legged European tie. In his first spell in charge at Real Madrid, the same applies for Zidane, who steered the team to three successive Champions League triumphs.

The two clubs have history in the competition too. They went head-to-head in the 2017-18 final, with Gareth Bale netting a memorable brace in a 3-1 win for Los Blancos; Reds star Mohamed Salah was infamously injured early in that game after a tangle with Sergio Ramos.

Rodrygo, Real Madrid Beat Club Brugge 3-1 in Champions League

Real Madrid finished the group stages of the 2019-20 UEFA Champions League with a 3-1 against Club Brugge. Rodrygo, Vinicius Jr. and Luka Modric got the goals for Los Blancos.

After a drab first half, the match exploded with two goals in two minutes. Rodrygo got the opener with a great half volley, but Hans Vanaken tied things up with an even better strike. Vinicius restored the lead and secured the win, and Modric added one more goal.

Los Blancos had already secured second place in Group A, while Brugge were still battling for a spot in the UEFA Europa League. Paris Saint-Germain's win over Galatasaray meant they finished third, regardless of the result in Belgium.

The Champions League can often serve up some of the best football on offer between the top clubs in Europe, but Wednesday's outing wasn't an example of such a match.

Real had nothing left to play for, and Brugge were clearly not of the same calibre, opting for an aggressive approach and few risks. The result was a drab opening half, with virtually no chances to speak of.

Managing Madrid sent out this ironic tweet:

Brugge did damage with pace on the counter in the reverse fixture, but with Madrid not needing to commit forward on Wednesday, there was no room to operate. The better chances fell to the visitors, with Eder Militao aiming an effort wide off a corner and Vinicius testing Simon Mignolet.

Percy Tau put Alphonse Areola to work, and Simon Deli headed a ball right at the stopper.

Isco fired narrowly wide after a good run, and the video assistant took away a late Brugge goal, with Tau offside in the buildup to Emmanuel Dennis' strike.

At half-time, sportswriter Kiyan Sobhani was more concerned with Brugge's aggressive approach than the lack of fireworks:

The second half started in similar fashion, although Brugge showed a little more desire to get forward.

It was Real who took the lead after 53 minutes, however, with Rodrygo blasting a half-volley past Mignolet.

Sobhani also praised Alvaro Odriozola's role in the build-up:

The travelling fans hadn't finished celebrating when Vanaken pulled his side level, however, taking a good pass from Dennis and bending his shot past the reach of Areola.

All of a sudden, the match came alive, with the home fans urging Brugge to attack and Real finding space on the counter. Less than 10 minutes after the equaliser, Rodrygo couldn't work the ball into goal, but Vinicius was there to pick up the pieces and restore the lead.

Dennis and Siebe Schrijvers combined well to set up a great chance for Brugge, but Militao made a fantastic block to keep the lead safe. Dennis also had a headed chance, but the cross proved too difficult, and his effort went wide.

Brugge deserved an equaliser for their second-half efforts and nearly got it via Dennis, but instead, the goal fell on the other end of the pitch, with Modric taking a pass from Casemiro and finishing well to put the final score on the board.

Rodrygo Says He Was 'Shaking' When He Met Real Madrid Manager Zinedine Zidane

Real Madrid youngster Rodrygo has said he started shaking when he first met Los Blancos manager Zinedine Zidane

The 18-year-old joined Real from Santos back in the summer, a year on from the Madrid giants reaching an agreement with the Brazilian club.

He has already made his presence known at the Santiago Bernabeu, netting two goals in seven appearances in La Liga and scoring a hat-trick against Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League:

https://twitter.com/brlive/status/1197547970809487360

On his arrival at Real, though, Rodrygo has said he was visibly nervous meeting the legendary Zidane, per Real Madrid TV (h/t Goal):

"When I met Zidane, I started shaking. I used to watch videos of him when he was a player, and he's now my coach. It's crazy. I was delighted to meet him, but I was so nervous."

Real play Club Brugge in the Champions League on Wednesday, but Zidane is likely to play a weakened side in Belgium as Los Blancos have already confirmed their qualification out of Group A but cannot top the pool.

They also have a huge week coming up in La Liga. On Sunday, Real visit Valencia before next Wednesday's rescheduled El Clasico against Barcelona at the Camp Nou.

In their final game before the winter break, Los Blancos then host Athletic Bilbao on December 22.

Real and Barca have been locked level on points at the top of La Liga for over a month now, with the Blaugrana holding top spot due to a superior goal difference.

If Real can win their final three league games before the Christmas break, they will be the ones at the top of the tree, but any slip-ups could leave them having to chase in the second half of the campaign.

Takefusa Kubo Says He 'Deserves' Barcelona Boos After Joining Real Madrid

Former Barcelona prospect Takefusa Kubo has said the Camp Nou boos directed at him did not hurt, adding he deserved the jeers from fans after signing for rivals Real Madrid.

Kubo is on loan at Mallorca and made his first trip to the Camp Nou in the 5-2 loss on Saturday. He was booed relentlessly every time he touched the ball, but after the match, said the fans had every right to do so, per Goal's Robin Bairner:

"That’s the decision of the fans. I made my call and they have the right to whistle me. I think I deserve it, although there were people who also applauded me, which gave me courage.

"Does it hurt? No, they have to see me as a rival, not as an 18-year-old boy who plays football pretty well."

The Japanese starlet and his team-mates had no chance in the 5-2 loss, which saw Lionel Messi present his Ballon d'Or award to the fans before bagging a hat-trick:

The 18-year-old played well in the loss, even nutmegging Messi himself at one point. He consistently showed why he's so highly rated, holding his own against the very best La Liga has to offer.

FootballTalentScout wondered what could have been:

Kubo was one of the most exciting talents at Barcelona's famed La Masia academy before he was forced to return to Japan, as the Catalans were found to have breached international transfer regulations in signing him.

He was expected to return to the club after turning 18, but shocked everyone by opting to sign with hated rivals Real. The youngster excelled during the pre-season tour, and joined Mallorca on loan in August.

He's slowly starting to find his feet in Spanish football, and if he keeps developing at the same rapid pace, could play a major role for Los Blancos in the future.

He's not the only loanee impressing in La Liga, with Martin Odegaard putting together a sensational campaign at Real Sociedad. Rodrygo is enjoying a breakout campaign of his own in the capital, so the future looks bright for Los Blancos.

Agent: Gareth Bale 'Not Ecstatic' at Real Madrid, Hints at Possible Transfer

Gareth Bale's agent has admitted his client is "not ecstatic" at Real Madrid and could leave for "the right opportunity" following the latest friction between the winger and his club.

Jonathan Barnett, who represents Bale, recently appeared on the BBC's Euro Leagues Podcast (h/t Goal's Chris Burton) and described the player's current situation at the Santiago Bernabeu:

"He's not ecstatic. He has got a contract, and as long as he is a Real Madrid player he will play at 100 per cent—and do very well. He has never asked to leave.

"If the right opportunity came along for him and it's something he wants to do, we have to have a chat with the president of Real Madrid and see where we are."

Bale has been routinely criticised by sections of the Spanish media since he arrived at the Bernabeu six years ago, while supporters have also strongly scrutinised the player during his time at the club.

The 30-year-old cost £85 million when he joined from Tottenham Hotspur, but his injury record has attracted negative attention, along with his passion for golf and an alleged reluctance to speak fluent Spanish.

Earlier this week, Jose Mourinho remained tight-lipped on any potential pursuit of Bale when he was asked if he would like to see the winger at Spurs in January.

The Guardian's Sid Lowe recently dissected the fallout after Bale celebrated Wales' qualification to UEFA Euro 2020 by standing in front of a flag that read "Wales. Golf. Real Madrid. In that order."

Fans at the Bernabeu booed their player when he returned to Real commitments, but manager Zinedine Zidane took a neutral view and told a press conference supporters are entitled to their opinion:

It's sometimes easy to forget amid the jeers and spells on the sidelines that Bale has won a slew of honours in Real white. Along with four UEFA Champions League winners' medals, one La Liga crown and three FIFA Club World Cups, Bale has scored crucial, scintillating goals on the biggest occasions, too.

He scored twice in the 2018 Champions League final when Real beat Liverpool 3-1, his first being a bicycle-kick strike that's often spoken about as the best finish in a European decider:

BT Sport pundit Robbie Savage recently considered Bale's achievements in Madrid and said his compatriot boasts a superior legacy with Los Blancos than legend figure Zidane:

AS (h/t Football Espana) reported Bale has returned to the treatment table after he suffered a hamstring injury, which could keep him sidelined for Real's next two games.

The attacker will be missed despite failing to score in his last seven club appearances, having demonstrated during the last international break what he can accomplish when properly motivated, per Sky Sports Statto:

David Ornstein wrote for BBC Sport in July that Bale's proposed move to Chinese club Jiangsu Suning—where he could have earned £1 million per week—was scrapped after Real demanded a fee for the player.

Any prior misgivings between the player and Zidane appear to be a thing of the past for now, but Bale's agent suggests he remains open to a transfer provided the exit route suits.

Roberto Martinez: Eden Hazard 'is the Michael Jordan of Football'

Belgium manager Roberto Martinez has labelled Eden Hazard "the Michael Jordan of football" and backed the Real Madrid forward to win the Ballon d'Or in the future.

Hazard placed 13th in the 2019 Ballon d'Or rankings, with Lionel Messi winning the award for a sixth time at a ceremony in Paris on Monday:

Martinez believes the former Chelsea star has the potential to win the prestigious gong himself one day, and he compared Hazard to Chicago Bulls legend Jordan, a six-time NBA Finals MVP, per Cadena Ser's El Larguero (h/t Goal's Sacha Pisani):

"I see Hazard winning the Ballon d'Or. He has the role of being a Ballon d'Or winner. What he has done is the level of the Ballon d'Or, and he is always eligible for the prize. He has done it at Chelsea, in France. It is difficult for a foreigner to be at the reference of a project that works to win the league. He is a last-pass player, a Michael Jordan. Hazard is the Michael Jordan of football."

Hazard, 28, received his nomination for the 2019 Ballon d'Or based on a superb 2018-19 campaign with Chelsea, when he was integral to the Blues winning the UEFA Europa League and coming third in the Premier League:

He then secured a €100 million (£89 million) move to the Santiago Bernabeu in the hope he could replace some of the productivity lost when Real sold Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus:

The Belgium international's first few months with Los Blancos have been disappointing.

It was widely reported he arrived at the club overweight, and he then missed the opening three games of the new La Liga campaign with a hamstring injury.

Since returning to fitness, he has shown flashes of his brilliant best, but his return of one goal and one assist in eight appearances in the Spanish top flight is disappointing for a player of his quality and price.

Hazard is now sidelined again with an ankle injury and will miss the first El Clasico of the season against Barcelona on December 18, as well as the preceding games against Espanyol, Club Brugge and Valencia:

That is a big blow for manager Zinedine Zidane. While Hazard has yet to find his scoring boots, he had looked much closer to his best recently, especially in a superb display in the 3-1 win against Real Sociedad.

Real Madrid vs. Espanyol: Odds, Live Stream, TV Schedule and Preview

Dec 6, 2019

In-form Real Madrid will be overwhelming favourites when they face Espanyol on Saturday, in what could well be one of the most lopsided La Liga contests this season.

Caesars has handed Los Blancos odds of -550 (bet $550 to win $100), compared to a whopping +1400 for the Catalans. A draw comes in at +640.

Premier Sports (UK) and BeIN Sports (U.S.) will cover the match, which will start at noon GMT/7 a.m. ET.

Preview

Real Madrid are level on points with Barcelona at the top of La Liga, having won their last three outings in the competition. Barring a minor miracle on Saturday, they'll add another three points against an Espanyol team in crisis.

The Catalans have lost four of their last five, including a 4-2 drubbing by Osasuna at home in their last outing. Osasuna had won just a single road match prior to that clash, and the home fans were understandably furious after the final whistle, per The Spanish Football Podcast:

They're expected to take a beating at the hands of Real, even if the La Liga giants have some worries going into the match.

Eden Hazard will miss out with an injury that could keep him sidelined for the Clasico against Barcelona on the 18th:

Gareth Bale would have been a logical replacement, but he too won't feature on Saturday:

Their absence will test Real's depth in attack. Rodrygo Goes replaced Bale in the 2-1 win over Deportivo Alaves and seems likely to come into the starting XI, while Isco and Vinicius Jr. could also take on bigger roles.

Isco got the start against Alaves and played well before being replaced by Ferland Mendy. He combined well with Karim Benzema and has earned his spot in the team while Hazard works his way back to full health.

Even with two of their best forwards sidelined, Los Blancos should have little trouble against Espanyol. Benzema saw his four-match scoring streak come to an end against Alaves but has been in fine form throughout the season, and he should feast on a defence that has conceded a La Liga-leading 28 goals.

Prediction: Real Madrid 4-0 Espanyol
