Tiger Woods was traveling 83 mph in a 45 mph zone before a car crash that resulted in him suffering severe leg injuries, police said Wednesday. His driving speed was considered the primary factor in the crash.

The Los Angeles County Sherriff's Office released its findings after previously stating it would not reveal details surrounding the crash, citing Woods' privacy. Police already determined Woods would not face any criminal charges.

The 15-time major champion was involved in a one-vehicle crash Feb. 23 in Los Angeles and underwent emergency surgery for "comminuted open fractures affecting both the upper and lower tibia and fibula." The surgery was considered a success, and Woods is back home in Florida recovering.

"Thank you to all the incredible surgeons, doctors, nurses and staff at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center," Woods said in a statement. "You have all taken such great care of me and I cannot thank you enough.

"I will be recovering at home and working on getting stronger every day."

TMZ Sports reported the black box in Woods' SUV showed he gained speed as he was losing control of the vehicle. There is no evidence Woods was under the influence of drugs or alcohol during the crash, and TMZ reported police did not subpoena his phone records to determine if he was using a cell phone.

Woods was previously arrested for a DUI in 2017.

Tiger Woods won't be at the Champions Dinner in Augusta on Tuesday. But in the spirit of the event, the golf legend sent his regards via Twitter.

Woods is at his home in Florida, where he is recovering from injuries he sustained when he was involved in a single-car crash near Los Angeles on Feb. 23.

As the rest of the top players on the PGA Tour readied to tee off in Augusta, they shared stories about Woods and honored him with face masks decorated with tigers.

Rory McIlroy told reporters he visited Woods at home at the end of March and that the star was "in decent spirits," per ESPN's Mark Schlabach

Johnson, who won the Masters in 2020, will serve a menu that includes pigs in a blanket, filet mignon and miso-marinated sea bass before dessert courses of peach cobbler and apple pie.

Justin Thomas conveyed Tiger Woods' disappointment at being unable to compete in the 2021 Masters, which tees off Thursday at Augusta National Golf Club.

"He said it's kind of starting to set in," Thomas told reporters. "He's bummed he's not here playing practice rounds with us, and we hate it, too."

The 2017 PGA Championship winner added he has missed not being able to practice with Woods, something that had become a tradition in recent years.

It remains unclear when Woods will be able to golf competitively again following his single-car crash in February. He suffered "comminuted open fractures" in his right tibia and fibula as a result of the accident.

The golf legend confirmed on March 16 he had left the hospital to continue his recovery at home.

Prior to the crash, Woods' status for the Masters had been in doubt after he underwent a microdiscectomy, his fifth back surgery, in January.

Woods underwent surgery in February after suffering multiple leg injuries in a single-car accident.

Justin Thomas told reporters Tuesday he has visited Woods, who said "it is starting to set in" that he won't be able to play at Augusta National this year due to his injuries.

The 45-year-old is one of the biggest stars in the tournament's history, winning his first Green Jacket in 1997. His most recent victory came in 2019, giving him the opportunity to choose last year's menu that included sushi and fajitas.

Reigning champion Dustin Johnson picked a menu that includes filet mignon and sea bass for Tuesday's dinner, and Woods will be there in spirit.

Tiger Woods congratulated Stanford after the Cardinal beat Arizona 54-53 in the title game of the 2021 NCAA women's basketball tournament.

Woods knows a thing or two about championships. Before the golfer won 15 major professional titles, he was the individual national champion while representing Stanford at the 1996 NCAA Division I men's championship. He also won three straight U.S. Amateur titles, the last two of which came when he was enrolled at the school.

The 45-year-old is recuperating from a single-car crash in February that left him with comminuted open fractures to his tibia and fibula.

If Woods was following along with the action at home, then he watched an instant classic. The Cardinal prevailed after Arizona star Aari McDonald missed a jumper at the buzzer, securing the program's third national championship.

Detectives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department are declining to release the cause of Tiger Woods' single-car crash in February, according to the Associated Press' Stefanie Dazio

Sheriff Alex Villanueva said Wednesday officers have concluded their investigation but cited privacy concerns over making any conclusions from the investigation public.

"We have reached out to Tiger Woods and his personnel," Villanueva said. "There's some privacy issues on releasing information on the investigation so we're going to ask them if they waive the privacy and then we will be able to do a full release on all the information regarding the accident."

Woods' representatives confirmed Feb. 24 the golf legend had suffered "open fractures" to his upper and lower tibia and fibula bones. He was released from the hospital March 16 to continue his recovery at home.

Villanueva quickly ruled out alcohol as a factor behind the crash, which saw Woods' Genesis SUV cross the median on a downhill stretch of roadway, strike a tree, and roll multiple times.

Dazio spoke to Joseph Giacalone, who works as a professor at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice and served in the New York City Police Department.

Giacalone expressed surprise at Villanueva's recent comments and "said it's unlikely that deputies would have sought the permission of non-celebrity victims in similar crashes to release information," per Dazio.

Villanueva's department has recently received significant criticism for its handling of the 2020 helicopter crash that killed Kobe and Gianna Bryant and seven others. On March 17, Vanessa Bryant named members of the L.A. County Sheriff's Department who allegedly circulated photos of the crash site, with a deputy in one instance reportedly showing the photos to a bartender at a local establishment.

Tiger Woods reportedly "never hit the brakes" during the car crash that led to a three-week stay in two Los Angeles-area hospitals before he returned home to South Florida earlier this week.

TMZ Sports reported Saturday the latest information from the investigation suggests Woods was driving "normal" until he started accelerating shortly before the crash and there's "no evidence he took his foot off the gas" or did anything to "prevent the crash once he lost control of the vehicle."

Woods suffered two fractures in his right leg in the crash among other injuries, and he reportedly told a responding officer he had no memory of the crash.

The probe is ongoing, with authorities looking at information gathered from the vehicle's black box.

Woods released a statement Tuesday upon his return home:

Local authorities said the stretch of road where Woods crashed is "known for wrecks" and responding officers found no signs of impairment, per Stefanie Dazio and Doug Ferguson of the Associated Press.

No charges have been filed in the case.

"I will say that it's very fortunate that Mr. Woods was able to come out of this alive," Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Carlos Gonzalez said.

Woods last competed in December's PNC Championship alongside his son, Charlie. His most recent official start was the 2020 Masters in November, where he finished 38th.

The 45-year-old California native announced in January he underwent his fifth back surgery.

He was back in his home state last month to serve as host of the Genesis Invitational, and he was driving to film a television segment the Tuesday morning after the tournament when the crash occurred.

Woods has won 82 PGA Tour tournaments, which is tied with Sam Snead for the most in history, and his 15 major titles rank second all-time behind only Jack Nicklaus' 18.

Golf legend Tiger Woods has been released from a Los Angeles hospital and is home in South Florida following a single-car crash on Feb. 23.

"Happy to report that I am back home and continuing my recovery. I am so grateful for the outpouring of support and encouragement that I have received over the past few weeks," Woods said in a statement, per Golf Digest's Daniel Rapaport. "Thank you to the incredible surgeons, doctors, nurses and staff at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. You have all taken such great care of me and I cannot thank you enough. I will be recovering at home and working on getting stronger every day."

The 45-year-old had open fractures to his tibia and fibula, requiring a rod insert for stabilization, among other injuries.

Woods was en route to film a celebrity coaching session with GolfTV at Rolling Hills Country Club after hosting the Genesis Invitational a few days earlier when his car rolled over on a winding stretch of road in Ranchos Palos Verdes, California.

First responders found the golfer conscious and transported him to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center for emergency surgery. He was later transferred to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for further procedures and care. Now three weeks later, Woods has been cleared to leave the hospital and return home to Florida to continue his rehabilitation.

Just how long that could take is still unclear, and Woods' team has given no indication of if or when he'll appear in public next, to say little of any future on the PGA Tour.

Prior to the crash, Woods hadn't appeared in any tournaments since The Masters in November, where he finished tied for 38 as defending champion.

Tiger Woods, 2K Agree to Long-Term Contract for 'PGA Tour 2K' Video Game Series

Mar 16, 2021

Tiger Woods and 2K Sports have announced a partnership that will see the 15-time major champion and his likeness appear in the PGA 2K video game series.

https://twitter.com/2K/status/1371793373556834308

"I am looking forward to making my return to the video game landscape, and with 2K and HB Studios, I've found the right partners to make it happen," Woods said in a statement. "I'm honored to take part in this opportunity and look forward to sharing my expertise and insights as we build the future of golf video games together."

Woods previously had a lengthy relationship with EA Sports, which produced the Tiger Woods PGA Tour series from 1998 to 2013. He has not lent his name to a video game since, and his return will mark an important step for 2K Sports' burgeoning PGA relationship.

"In golf, there is no bigger icon than Tiger Woods. Like the rest of the world, we were saddened to hear of his recent accident, and we wish him a full and smooth recovery," said 2K president David Ismailer. "We have been eager to announce our partnership with Tiger, whose legendary career has transcended the sport. We are thrilled to have him join our PGA TOUR 2K series as an executive director."

2K Sports partnered with HB Studios, developer of The Golf Club series, for the launch of PGA Tour 2K21 last year, which was lauded by fans and critics. As part of the same announcement that re-introduced Woods to the video game world, 2K announced it was purchasing HB Studios in a deal that will close in the first quarter of 2021.

Woods' on-course accomplishments need no repeating, and his name continues to be the largest in the sport. 2K adding his likeness to the game should only further add to the excitement around the future of the PGA 2K series.

There is no word on if Woods will be added to PGA 2K21, or if his agreement will start with the launch of the next game in the 2K series.

Following his involvement in a major car crash in February, Tiger Woods was honored at the Players Championship on Saturday.

The flag on the 17th hole paid tribute to one of the most famous and memorable moments of Woods' illustrious career:

It featured Tiger's initials, as well as the quote "Better than most" along with the date March 24, 2001.

It was on March 24, 2001, that Woods sunk a remarkable 60-foot putt on the famous island green at TPC Sawgrass during the third round of that year's Players Championship.

Gary Koch was on the call for NBC and said "Better than most" multiple times as the ball traversed its way through multiple breaks and then into the cup.

Woods would go on to win the tournament by a single stroke in the first of his two Players Championship victories.

Tiger is not playing in the Players Championship this week after suffering significant injuries in a single-car crash last month near Los Angeles.

During the aftermath, a statement from Dr. Anish Mahajan of Harbor-UCLA Medical Center was released on Woods' Twitter account:

In the statement, Mahajan noted that Woods suffered "open fractures" in his right leg, requiring surgery that resulted in a rod being placed in his tibia and screws and pins being placed in his foot and ankle.

The 45-year-old Woods' future in golf could now be up in the air.

Even if the 15-time major champion never plays another competitive round of golf again, however, he will be widely regarded as the greatest player in the history of the sport.
