CM Punk on WWE 'Formula;' Foley Hated Mankind Character; Danielson's Final WWE Days

Bleacher Report catches you up on the latest news from WWE and AEW.

CM Punk Says WWE Return Would Have Been Formulaic

CM Punk has already talked about AEW reviving his love of pro wrestling, along with his long list of grievances about his time in WWE. None of this is particularly new information.

However, Punk recently said one of the reasons he had little interest in returning to WWE is the formulaic way they book returns.

“If I went back to WWE, what would I do? There’s a formula," Punk told radio host Josh Martinez. "There’s a track record and a formula. This is what they do. Batista comes back, he wins the Royal Rumble, he main events WrestleMania. Edge comes back. He’s in the Royal Rumble. I think he was in it twice.

“He might have won, I don’t know. He goes on the main event WrestleMania. There’s a formula and I was bored of that s--t 10 years ago, so I’m bored of it now."

No matter which way you fall on the AEW vs. WWE war, it's hard to argue Punk is wrong here. That is precisely the formula. There was a reason Punk return rumors would begin cropping up every year around the Royal Rumble. Fans notice the patterns just as wrestlers do, and it leads to mass speculation.

For two successive years, Edge made his return at the Royal Rumble. It's just facts. Those returns help build hype for WWE's top pay-per-views, so the formula works, but it's clear Punk didn't want to return in that type of environment.

Foley Says He Hated Mankind Character

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f29JufEYBLw?start=7s

Mankind may have been Mick Foley's most famous character, but the WWE Hall of Famer didn't exactly love playing him. Foley said the constrictive mask made it difficult for him to breathe during an appearance on Talking Tough

“I hated that character because the mask was so … it really constricted my breathing, you know? With the leather underneath the nose. I needed as much oxygen as I could suck in anyway. But it came about because Jim Ross was a big advocate of mine, and Mr. McMahon was never interested in me. He thought I didn’t look like a star. And finally, my name came up in 1995, in the fall, he slammed it on the table, and he said, ‘Alright, I’ll bring him in, but I’m covering up his face.’ And that’s how I got my foot in the door, and luckily, as time went by, he kind of found out I had an interesting real-life story to tell.

“So, I was able to inject a lot more realism into that character and it really was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The stuff that Mankind did with Dwayne Johnson, when he was my opponent and when he was my partner, was really fun and memorable stuff. Luckily, we were taking peoples’ minds off their problems and they still remember some of the stuff 22 years after the fact.”

Mankind was some of WWE's best character work of the Attitude Era and Foley played him perfectly, so it all worked out from a fan perspective. That said, it's easy to see why having a constrictive leather mask could lead to some issues.

Like he did for much of his career, Foley sacrificed himself in service to the wrestling business and we're all better for it.

Danielson Was Last-Minute Addition to WrestleMania Main Event

Now that time has passed since Bryan Danielson's departure from WWE, we're getting more information on the latter part of his time with the company.

Fightful Select reported Danielson was actually a last-minute addition to the Universal championship match between Roman Reigns and Edge. Danielson was also praised for his professionalism during his final weeks with the company.

“Bryan handled things so well that a lot of people didn’t think he was actually leaving or taking any time off. We couldn’t have asked for more," one source told Fightful.

WWE Rumors on Gable Steveson and His Future After Being Drafted to Raw

Gable Steveson may have been selected to the Raw brand in the 2021 WWE draft, but he's not coming to a television screen anytime soon.

Fightful Select reported WWE has no immediate plan to use Steveson, the Olympic gold medallist who signed with the company earlier this year. WWE drafted him to the Raw brand in large part to make a splash on draft night and create national headlines.

The Fightful report says it was not a secret internally that Steveson would be drafted, but the company wanted to keep it away from the public for a surprise factor.

Steveson only signed with WWE in September; it would have been nearly impossible to get him ready for his on-screen debut right after the draft. The 21-year-old is also set to continue competing at the University of Minnesota in amateur wrestling, so his schedule isn't exactly conducive to WWE's travel.

Odds are it will be well into 2022 before Steveson ever sets foot in a WWE ring, and that's better for both him and the company.

AEW's Jon Moxley Rips WWE Creative in New Book: 'I Was in a Living Hell'

It's no secret Jon Moxley was miserable in the latter part of his tenure in WWE.

His autobiography, Mox, is making it abundantly clear just how miserable. Moxley writes that he was "in a living hell" with WWE and categorized himself as depressed and angry, according to an excerpt from the book:

"I had nothing even close to heat. I was once one of the most popular performers in all of WWE, and now I was lost in the ring in front of confused or apathetic audiences. I was Fn dead in the water, irreconcilable, a dog to be taken out back and shot … and I knew it. I was fully aware of it through every slow and excruciating second, yet my objections went ignored or refuted, like that movie where the guy is still awake but paralyzed during open-heart surgery. If you sat through any of my segments on TV during this timeframe, you know what I’m talking about … unless you blocked it from your memory. If you thought you were confused, imagine what it was like being me? S--t, at least you had a remote control. I couldn’t just turn the channel on my own life. I was in a living hell. Gee, it’s fun reminiscing.

"I wasn’t just depressed, I was angry. It’s not like I don’t like money. I don’t WANT things to be this way. Why do they have to make it impossible? Why does everything have to be so Fn stupid? They’re really gonna make me walk away from all this money, aren’t they? They can’t just write one good angle, let me cut one good Fn promo? F--k! I can’t believe it’s come to this. There was a time I thought I’d be a lifer with WWE, but this whole place has gone Fn MAD, and I feel like I’m the only one who can see it … buncha MFers just playing violins while the ship sinks and Vince continues to lose his mind. 'F--k ’em, I’m just gonna go to Japan or something,' I tell Renee, while sipping on my third stiff drink. 'I’m telling you, April thirtieth, I’m Fn done.' I had been talking about leaving for months and my mind was long made up, but when I was in a bad mood or three drinks in, I would feel the need to reaffirm it for some reason, as if I suspected she didn’t believe me."

Moxley spent eight years in WWE before leaving in 2019. He signed with AEW later that year and became the promotion's second champion, defeating Chris Jericho at the 2020 Revolution pay-per-view.

AEW has also allowed Moxley to wrestle for several other promotions, including New Japan and GCW. He is currently GCW's world champion.

It's clear that Moxley basks in the freedom afforded to him by AEW, both in his on-screen persona with the company and in terms of being allowed to work in other companies that interest him.

WWE barely acknowledges the outside wrestling world, preferring its own style of scripted promos and a universe unto itself. Some wrestlers thrive in that environment. Moxley, it seems, hated pretty much every second of being told what to say and when to say it.

Brock Lesnar Fined $1M by WWE for Attacking Adam Pearce on SmackDown

Oct 30, 2021

Brock Lesnar's attack on Adam Pearce will cost The Beast even more than just an indefinite suspension.

Pearce announced on Friday Night SmackDown that Lesnar has been fined $1 million:

After losing to Roman Reigns at Crown Jewel thanks to outside interference from the Usos, Lesnar vowed to appear at SmackDown and "beat Roman Reigns senseless."

Lesnar and Reigns got into a wild brawl to start the show, prompting Pearce to send out more superstars to stop Brock's attack.

When that failed, Pearce chastised Lesnar for attacking referees and causing damage to the property. He announced Lesnar's indefinite suspension in the ring, leading the former WWE champion to attack him.

Despite the fine, Lesnar is still doing okay for himself. His return to WWE didn't immediately result in him regaining the Universal Championship, but another showdown with Reigns either at the Royal Rumble or WrestleMania seems likely.

WWE Hall of Famer Hacksaw Jim Duggan said this week he had to undergo surgery for prostate cancer.

In a video posted on his Instagram page Thursday, Duggan announced he had been living with the disease "for a couple of months now."

Debra Duggan, Jim's wife, wrote a follow-up post Friday after his procedure: "Jim's surgery went as planned. He is resting comfortably now. Thank you for your prayers, good vibes and well wishes. Please continue them as he continues to heal."

The post was accompanied by "#physicalssavelives."

This is the second surgery Duggan has undergone in less than two weeks. Debra wrote on Instagram on Oct. 20 that he was recovering after an emergency operation.

Per TMZ Sports, it's unclear if that procedure was related to Duggan's cancer diagnosis.

Duggan was a star in WWE (then called the World Wrestling Federation) from 1987 to '93 before moving to WCW. He won the first-ever Royal Rumble in 1988, when there were only 20 participants. The 67-year-old won the WCW television title and United States title during his tenure with the promotion.

WWE inducted Duggan into the Hall of Fame in 2011.

Goldberg Says His WWE Contract Is Nearing Conclusion

Goldberg is coming off a victory over Bobby Lashley, but his long-term future in WWE is still up in the air as his contract has just one match remaining.

The two-time WWE universal champion told Ring Rules (via Marc Middleton of Wrestling Inc.) he still feels like he can perform at the age of 54.

"I still feel as though I can wrestle, I still feel as though I can entertain," he said. "After this match I have one more match on my contract, and that's it. We'll see what happens, you never know."

Goldberg also left the door open for a future match featuring himself and his son, Gage, taking on the father-son tandem of Rey Mysterio and Dominik Mysterio after Gage became involved in his storyline with Lashley leading up to Crown Jewel.

"Oh you never know, you never know what the next day brings," he told Ring Rules. "So if people want that, we'll see if we can give them what they want. You never know."

WWE has found success with bringing back marquee names like John Cena, Brock Lesnar and Goldberg for short-term storylines leading up to major events. It can give a pay-per-view an added boost without taking too much television time away from the full-time Superstars.

Goldberg generated a massive following during his dominant run in WCW during the late 1990s, and he still generates a positive response from fans every time he returns to WWE.

In turn, it wouldn't be a surprise if the sides come to an agreement on an extension before his current deal runs out.

Vince McMahon Returns to Saudi Arabia For Business Talks

Fresh off the Crown Jewel event last week, which took place in the Saudi Arabia capital of Riyadh, McMahon has returned to the country for further talks.

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter (via Middleton) reported McMahon came back to the United States after Crown Jewel but has quickly made his way back to Saudi Arabia for "business-related discussions."

It's unknown what those talks are centered around, but WWE has already committed to a long-term partnership with the country as part of a 10-year contract signed in 2018.

The company has run six pay-per-view events in Saudi Arabia since the deal kicked off with the Greatest Royal Rumble in April 2018. There were two shows per year in 2018 and 2019 before COVID-19 caused a hiatus from February 2020 until Crown Jewel last week.

WWE has consistently created high-level cards for their events in the Middle Eastern country, so it'll be interesting to see how the partnership continues to evolve over time.

Charlotte Flair Pulled From Media Availability

Flair has faced rumors of significant backstage heat following a contentious segment and subsequent altercation with Becky Lynch at last week's SmackDown, and now it appears the backlash is having a tangible impact.

Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful.com reported WWE pulled the SmackDown women's champion from her media assignments this week:

That update comes on the heels of a report from Mike Johnson of PWInsider, who noted there are people close to Flair who are "privately pushing the idea of her trying to get out of her WWE deal," though it's unclear how realistic that is given her longtime status as one of the company's top stars.

Flair and Lynch are on separate shows and came together to trade their championship belts following their swaps from Raw and SmackDown in the 2021 WWE draft. So while they likely won't cross paths weekly, a champion vs. champion match often takes place at Survivor Series, which creates some questions heading into that hallmark pay-per-view next month.

It's also unknown whether the SmackDown champ's removal from media commitments was a one-week move amid the widespread speculation or a more extended decision by the company.

The story should continue to play out in the weeks ahead, starting with Friday's SmackDown.

Former WWE superstar Bray Wyatt's 90-day non-compete clause is set to expire Friday, and it looks like he's preparing to present a new character.

Wyatt, whose real name is Windham Rotunda, was released by WWE on July 31 and will officially become a free agent Oct. 29.

On Wednesday, he tweeted "2 more days" as a tease. On Thursday, he followed up by removing WWE from his social media, apparently indicating that he will be going by Windham.

It is not yet known which company Windham will sign with, but he's received interest from AEW and Impact Wrestling.

Ring of Honor announced Wednesday it's "planning a pivot ... with a new mission and strategy" that will require a brief hiatus for at least the first quarter of 2022.

The company said the break will begin following the Final Battle event on Dec. 11:

More than that, Fightful's Sean Ross Sapp and the Wrestling Observer Newsletter's Dave Meltzer reported ROH is releasing all of its wrestlers from their contracts.

Bryan Alvarez of the Wrestling Observer provided more context:

Even though the promotion is looking to relaunch in the spring, Wednesday's announcement is bound to raise questions about Ring of Honor's overall viability moving forward.

ROH was once the top proving ground for rising stars on the independent scene. Almost every top name in the United States within the last decade competed in ROH at some point, with Bryan Danielson, CM Punk, Samoa Joe, Adam Cole and Seth Rollins among the notable examples.

But the growth of NXT helped put a dent in Ring of Honor's popularity because it provided an alternative to WWE's typical presentation within the WWE ecosystem.

The explosion of All Elite Wrestling dealt another blow to ROH. When Cody Rhodes and The Young Bucks announced the launch of AEW in 2019, it meant Ring of Honor had to brace for a wave of marquee wrestlers heading for the exit door.

The company could thrive when it was a main feeder system for WWE in the mid-to-late 2000s. Now, it's getting crowded out of the wrestling landscape with other promotions replicating what made ROH successful.

It would be one thing if Ring of Honor went on a break while providing a firm idea of what to expect upon its return and who will be on the roster. Instead, it might be faced with rebooting in the aftermath of a total talent exodus, at which point any comeback will be doomed before it starts.

WWE Rumors on Greg Hamilton Release, WWE Draft; Io Shirai Reacts to Scary Ladder Spot

Oct 27, 2021

Bleacher Report catches you up on the latest news from the WWE Universe.

WWE Reportedly Releases Greg Hamilton

Longtime WWE announcer Greg Hamilton was reportedly released from the company this week.

According to PWInsider (h/t WrestlingInc.com's Marc Middleton), Hamilton removed WWE references from his Twitter bio this week, which led to the outlet inquiring about his status and receiving confirmation that he had been let go.

WWE has yet to officially announce Hamilton's release or to give any information regarding why the decision was made.

Middleton did note, however, that Hamilton took aim at rapper Westside Gunn on social media for using a sample of his voice in one of his songs without permission.

While Hamilton later deleted his post, Middleton reported that he wrote the following:

"Well @westsidegunn @buffalokidsgallery let's hope that since you STOLE my voice for your incoherent kindergarten fables that you saved up enough delivering for Door Dash….because….You….are…. [censored emoji]'d. You'll be paying me for years….apologize and I'll think about not collecting every dime for the rest of your life….or I can just get WWE lawyers….that's OO too. Settle with my lawyer. And don't EVER use my voice again….so wrong."

Hamilton also made several additional posts on the subject, including: "Tick….tock…..the longer this goes, the longer I have in court….you ready to settle or do you wanna dance with WWE lawyers? It's a slam dunk. Price goes up by the day…."

After signing with WWE in 2015, Hamilton spent time in NXT as a backstage interviewer and ring announcer before getting the call to the main roster in 2016.

He has primarily served as the ring announcer on SmackDown, and it isn't yet clear who WWE intends to replace him with.

Details on Tag Teams Broken Up in WWE Draft

Several of the tag teams broken up via the WWE draft reportedly weren't made aware of the decisions ahead of time.

According to Fightful Select (h/t Middleton), some of the team members learned they were no longer part of a tag team on social media as the draft picks were made on Raw, SmackDown or the post-shows.

It was also reported that while some people within WWE pushed for the teams to be kept together, the suggestions were largely ignored aside from keeping AJ Styles and Omos as a team.

Some of the teams that notably got split up include Natalya and Tamina, Mace and T-Bar, Shotzi Blackheart and Tegan Nox, and Veer and Shanky, although Shanky remains in an alliance with Jinder Mahal on SmackDown.

One of the biggest selling points of the WWE draft over the years has been the potential of teams breaking up, and there is almost always at least one instance of that happening.

WWE did it several times this year, although most of the teams that were split weren't being used regularly or at a high level.

The one exception may be Natalya and Tamina, who held the WWE Women's Tag Team Championships for 129 days before dropping them to Rhea Ripley and Nikki A.S.H. last month.

Shirai Tweets After Ladder Match Spot

Io Shirai made it clear she was fine Tuesday night after taking a scary bump during a ladder match for the NXT Women's Tag Team Championships.

At one point during the match, Shirai was pushed off a ladder by Indi Hartwell, resulting in her landing on another ladder outside the ring.

Shirai tweeted the following during the aftermath:

Io and Zoey Stark entered the match as the champions, and they faced off against the team of Hartwell and Persia Pirotta, as well as Toxic Attraction's Gigi Dolin and Jacy Jayne.

Dolin and Jayne won the titles, and Mandy Rose beat Raquel Gonzalez for the NXT Women's Championship later in the night due to interference from Dakota Kai, giving Toxic Attraction all of the gold.

Shirai has been one of the top women in NXT since debuting for the brand in 2018, and she proved why once again on Tuesday.

The former NXT Women's champion put her body on the line and played a big role in why the Triple Threat ladder match was so entertaining.

Now that Shirai is no longer a tag team champ, it stands to reason that she could go after the NXT Women's Championship once again or perhaps even get called up to the main roster.
