Fantasy Football Big Board: Complete PPR Player Rankings for Week 4

We're three weeks into the 2022 fantasy season, and it has been—something.

At quarterback, some things have gone as planned. Seeing Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens and Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills atop the leaderboard isn't a surprise. However, seeing Tua Tagovailoa of the Miami Dolphins and Carson Wentz of the Washington Commanders ranked ahead of Justin Herbert of the Los Angeles Chargers and Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals definitely is.

Seeing Nick Chubb of the Cleveland Browns as the No. 1 running back three weeks in isn't a huge shock. But he's followed by James Robinson of the Jacksonville Jaguars and Clyde Edwards-Helaire of the Kansas City Chiefs—just like absolutely no one predicted.

Stefon Diggs of the Bills and Cooper Kupp of the Los Angeles Rams leading all wideouts in PPR points? Makes sense. Washington's Curtis Samuel also in the top 10? Curveball city.

Of course, that leaderboard could look drastically different in a few weeks. That's why it pays to never get too high about a win or too low about a loss. Treat each week as a season unto itself. Put the past aside and focus on getting a win in Week 4.

That's what we're here to help you do, with position-by-position PPR rankings, info on matchups to target and avoid and even a few sleepers thrown in for good measure.

Quarterbacks

Over the first three editions of this column, I have largely preached patience where underperforming players are concerned.

But it's officially time to start worrying about some veteran quarterbacks.

Per the Average Draft Position data at Fantasy Pros, Tom Brady of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers and Russell Wilson of the Denver Broncos were the eighth, ninth and 10th quarterbacks drafted in 2022. Brady was the third-highest-scoring quarterback in 2021. Rodgers was sixth.

This year has been another story—seemingly written by Stephen King. Three weeks into the season, Wilson ranks 22nd in fantasy points among quarterbacks. Rodgers is 25th. And Brady is 26th. Last season, Brady threw 43 touchdown passes by himself. In 2022, the trio has nine touchdowns combined.

There are reasons for the slow starts. Brady's receivers are banged up, and Mike Evans was suspended for Week 3. Wilson is learning a new offense. Rodgers lost Davante Adams in the offseason. But these quarterbacks were drafted in the hopes of a sneaky top-five finish, yet they're no better than low-end fantasy starters at this point.

With each passing dud week, it's becoming harder to trust them as even that.

Good Matchups

Tom Brady, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (vs. KC) [DraftKings DFS Value: $6,100]

Yes. I just said that Brady is slumping—he's averaging less than 225 passing yards and just one touchdown pass per game. But Brady will have Evans back for this showdown with Patrick Mahomes and Chiefs, and the Buccaneers have to pass to have a chance of winning this game.

Joe Burrow, Cincinnati Bengals (vs. MIA) [DraftKings DFS Value: $6,800]

Burrow and the Bengals broke out of their early season funk last week, with the third-year pro passing for 275 yards and three scores against the Jets. "Joe Cool" should be even more chill Thursday night against the Dolphins and their 31st-ranked pass defense.

Bad Matchups

Derek Carr, Las Vegas Raiders (vs. DEN) [DraftKings DFS Value: $5,800]

It's not Carr's fault that the Raiders are the NFL's only remaining winless team, and he has posted low-end QB1 numbers for fantasy managers. But the Broncos have been exceedingly stingy through the air, allowing just 170 passing yards and one touchdown pass per contest.

Matthew Stafford, Los Angeles Rams (at SF) [DraftKings DFS Value: $6,600]

Stafford hasn't been lighting the world on fire, either. Like Brady, Rodgers and Wilson, Stafford ranks outside the top-20 quarterbacks for the year. Now he gets a 49ers defense that has allowed just two touchdown passes and less than 150 passing yards per game.

Sleeper

Jacoby Brissett, Cleveland Browns (at ATL) [DraftKings DFS Value $5,500]

Three weeks into the 2022 season, Brissett has more fantasy points than Brady, Rodgers, Stafford, Wilson and Matt Ryan. If Geno Smith can throw for 325 yards and a pair of touchdowns against Atlanta's porous defense, Brissett can too.

Running Backs

Injuries are a sad fact of life in fantasy football, especially at the running back position. And sure enough, Week 3 saw a quartet of big names felled by injuries that cloud their status for Week 4.

With one, there has at least been good news on a couple of fronts. The first is that Minnesota Vikings running back Dalvin Cook amassed 96 rushing yards and a touchdown before dislocating his shoulder against the Detroit Lions. The second is that, per reports, Cook is hopeful he will be able to face the Saints this week wearing a protective harness.

The injury concerns drop Cook several spots in these rankings, but he's included as though he will play.

Fantasy managers weren't so fortunate with David Montgomery of the Chicago Bears, who suffered what has been deemed a "lower leg" injury just three carries and 11 yards into Sunday's win over the Houston Texans. Montgomery has been labeled "day-to-day," but given his injury history and the huge game turned in by backup Khalil Herbert in Week 3, fantasy managers should prepare as though Montgomery won't be available.

Montgomery isn't the only NFC North back who is banged up. Per ESPN's Eric Woodyard, Lions running back D'Andre Swift is "week-to-week" after spraining his shoulder against the Vikings. With Swift out, Jamaal Williams steps into the lead role for the Lions.

Then there's Joe Mixon of the Cincinnati Bengals, who was unable to finish last week's win in New York because of an ankle injury. However, Bengals head coach Zac Taylor indicated that Mixon should be fine for Thursday's matchup with the Dolphins.

Good Matchups

Breece Hall, New York Jets (at PIT) [DraftKings DFS Value: $5,400]

Hall had his best game of the season to date last week against the Bengals, tallying 92 total yards on 14 touches. This week could bring his first career game with 100 total yards—the Steelers' run defense is awful again, allowing over 142 yards per game on the ground.

Javonte Williams, Denver Broncos (at LV) [DraftKings DFS Value: $6,600]

Fantasy managers have been anxiously awaiting a breakout performance from Williams, who has been mostly held in check on the ground. That may not come this week, but the Raiders just gave up over 140 total yards to Derrick Henry and have had all kinds of problems defending backs catching passes out of the backfield.

Bad Matchups

Clyde Edwards-Helaire, Kansas City Chiefs (at TB ) [DraftKings DFS Value: $6,200]

Edwards-Helaire has been one of the most pleasant early surprises of the 2022 season, posting top-five fantasy numbers over the first three weeks. But this week's Sunday night affair in Tampa sets up as a letdown week—teams just don't run the ball successfully against the Buccaneers.

Miles Sanders, Philadelphia Eagles (vs. JAX) [DraftKings DFS Value: $6,000]

Sanders was quiet last week against the Washington Commanders, but he's been a decent fantasy option so far this year, posting low-end RB2 numbers. That may be the best-case scenario in Week 4 against the Jaguars and their league-leading run defense.

Sleeper

Rashaad Penny, Seattle (at DET) [DraftKings DFS Value: $4,900]

Penny has gone from the fantasy darling during the stretch run of last season to a complete afterthought thanks to a sluggish start to 2022. The Lions could be just what the doctor ordered—they have allowed over 420 rushing yards and seven touchdowns in just three games this season.

Wide Receivers

(Photo by David Jensen/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images)

The rookie wide receiver class in 2022 was widely hailed as one of the best in recent memory. Six wideouts were drafted in Round 1, including four of the top 10 picks.

They have not disappointed.

Drake London of the Atlanta Falcons has posted a 16/214/2 stat line over his first three NFL games—numbers good for top-20 fantasy production. The former USC standout has at least 12 PPR points in every game this season.

Just behind London in fantasy points is Garrett Wilson, who was one of two Ohio State stars drafted in Round 1. He's been a bit more hit-or-miss, but his 8/102/2 line against the Cleveland Browns was the biggest fantasy outing from a rookie receiver this year.

Wilson's Buckeyes teammate, Chris Olave, has yet to find the end zone. But last week against the Panthers. Olave exploded for nine catches for 147 yards—the highest yardage mark of any first-year receiver in 2022.

All three rank among the top-25 fantasy receivers three weeks in, and Jahan Dotson of the Washington Commanders isn't too far behind them.

Good Matchups

Gabriel Davis, Buffalo Bills (vs. BAL) [DraftKings DFS Value: $6,600]

Davis was back in the lineup for the Bills last week, producing a modest 3/37/0 line on six targets against the Miami Dolphins. Week 4 will bring bigger and better things for the field-stretching wideout—the Ravens have been victimized repeatedly on long passes this season.

Chris Olave, New Orleans Saints (vs. MIN) [DraftKings DFS Value: $5,500]

Since we led this week's wide receiver rankings off talking up the rookies, it seems only fair to highlight one with a favorable matchup up this week. The Vikings enter Week 4 ranked 29th in the NFL in pass defense, so we're willing to predict Olave gets his first NFL touchdown Sunday morning in London.

Bad Matchups

Rashod Bateman, Baltimore Ravens (at BUF) [DraftKings DFS Value: $5,600]

There's always a chance Bateman will get behind the defense for a long touchdown. But even with both of their starting safeties sidelined last week the Bills were mostly able to keep the speedsters for the Miami Dolphins in front of them.

Terry McLaurin, Washington Commanders (at DAL) (DraftKings DFS Value: $6,500]

McLaurin isn't Washington's highest-scoring fantasy wideout for the season, but he's at least been able to post high-end WR3 numbers through three games. That won't be easy Sunday in Dallas—the Cowboys secondary has held up well most of the 2022 season.

Sleeper

Greg Dortch, Arizona Cardinals (at CAR) [DraftKings DFS Value: $5,000]

Dortch is one of the most surprising wide receivers in fantasy football so far this season—he has at least nine targets in two of three games, 15-plus PPR points in all three contests and ranks inside the top-25 fantasy receivers for the season. So long as Rondale Moore (hamstring) is on the shelf, Dortch is an every-week WR3.

Tight Ends

Ladies and gentlemen, we have an honest-to-goodness Kyle Pitts sighting!

Over the first two weeks of the season, the second-year tight end for the Atlanta Falcons was essentially invisible. He was targeted 10 times, managed just four catches for 38 yards and caused quite a bit of indigestion in the fantasy community.

But in Week 3 against the Seattle Seahawks, Pitts finally showed signs of life, setting season highs in targets (nine), catches (five) and yards (87) on the way to the sixth-best fantasy stat line of the week at the position.

Per Ashton Edmunds of the team's website, Pitts said that winning is what matters, and he was just as happy to finally see some action as fantasy managers were.

"The ball finally found me," he said. "I feel like we've been doing a good job all week just preparing and trying to expose some of their defensive weaknesses and matchups. I mean, we're just trying to win as a team. I'm not selfish. I don't think I always need the ball but, as a playmaker, we're all competitors. We all want to score, so at the end of the day it's a team game and we want to win, and if the ball comes my way, I'll do the best that I can."

Given that Pitts' biggest game of the season happened to coincide with Atlanta's first victory, hopefully the Falcons will take that as a sign to keep their uber-talented tight end involved moving forward.

Good Matchups

T.J. Hockenson, Detroit Lions (vs. SEA) [DraftKings DFS Value: $4,100]

Hockenson hasn't really benefitted that much from all the offensive fireworks in Detroit this season—he has just 10 catches for 82 yards. But he found the end zone for the first time last week, and this week Hockenson draws a top-10 fantasy matchup for his position.

David Njoku, Cleveland Browns (at ATL) [DraftKings DFS Value: $3,700]

Njoku exploded last week against the Pittsburgh Steelers, hauling in a career-high nine passes for 89 yards and a touchdown. He has a solid shot at keeping the good times going Sunday against an Atlanta team that has been very kind to opposing tight ends through three weeks.

Bad Matchups

Dallas Goedert, Philadelphia Eagles (vs. JAX) [DraftKings DFS Value: $4,500]

Goedert is off to a solid start to the season with double-digit PPR points in each of the past two games while ranking sixth in PPR points among tight ends. But in one of the bigger matchup surprises this season, the Jaguars haven't been an easy team to throw on.

Tyler Higbee, Los Angeles Rams (at SF) [DraftKings DFS Value: $4,400]

Higbee has been a serviceable weekly starter so far for fantasy managers who decided to wait at the position, and he's hit double-digits in PPR points each of the past two games. But the 49ers have been a bad matchup for tight ends, so temper expectations.

Sleeper

Tyler Conklin, New York Jets (at PIT) [DraftKings DFS Value: $3,600]

Conklin hasn't been a star for fantasy managers this season, but he has produced consistently—double-digit PPR points in all three games this season. He also draws a favorable Week 4 matchup, although if Zach Wilson takes over at quarterback Sunday it adds a fair measure of uncertainty to starting him.

WEEK 4 TIGHT END RANKINGS

Kickers and Defenses

Let's hear it for fluky touchdowns!

The Cleveland Browns were a tempting last-round defense pick in fantasy drafts this summer because they opened the season with what looked like four appealing matchups—at Carolina, vs. the New York Jets, vs. Pittsburgh and at Atlanta. However, the team underwhelmed over the season's first two weeks—the sack numbers were OK, but the Browns did very little in the takeaway department and allowed more points than expected.

For most of last Thursday's win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, it was the same story—the Browns only allowed 17 points, but they had just one sack and hadn't recorded a takeaway. Then, as time expired, a desperate Steelers team tried the old multilateral. It went about as you'd expect, and when Cleveland cornerback Denzel Ward recovered the inevitable fumble in the end zone, the Browns had a takeaway, a defensive touchdown and a top-five fantasy performance for the week.

It's a lesson in the unpredictability of the position—and the potential value of playing the correct matchups.

Good Matchups

Greg Joseph, Minnesota Vikings (at NO)

Joseph left fantasy managers who started him last week holding the proverbial bag, missing a pair of field-goal attempts in Minnesota's comeback win over the Lions. But the Saints are allowing double-digit fantasy points per game to the position, so shake off the stinker and roll him out again.

Pittsburgh Steelers Defense (vs. NYJ) [DraftKings DFS Value: $3,600]

The Steelers haven’t been as formidable defensively in 2022 as in past years, largely because of the absence of edge-rusher T.J. Watt. But this call is less about the Steelers and more about a Jets team that was a fantasy goldmine for opposing defenses with Zach Wilson under center in 2021.

Bad Matchups

Matt Gay, Los Angeles Rams (at SF)

With the Rams offense not exactly firing on all cylinders, Gay's fantasy production hasn't met expectations—he ranks outside the top 15 in fantasy points among kickers. That's not likely to change Sunday in a terrible fantasy matchup for kickers.

Buffalo Bills Defense (vs. BAL) (DraftKings DFS Value: $3,200]

That the Bills are an excellent NFL defense isn't in question. And over the first two weeks of the season, Buffalo posted fantasy points to match. But that production tailed off in a bad matchup in Week 3, and this week's tilt with Lamar Jackson and the Ravens is even worse.

Sleeper

New York Giants Defense (vs. CHI) [DraftKings D/ST Value: $3,100]

There's a reason why the Giants have nearly as high a salary at DraftKings this week as the Bills, and it ain't because Lawrence Taylor came back. The Bears are so bad offensively that it would take drastic improvement for the team to be terrible.

WEEK 4 KICKER RANKINGS

1. Justin Tucker, BAL (vs. BUF)

Before we hit the list of the top 100 players overall for Week 4 (a list that can aid in making "flex" decisions), the obligatory disclaimer and bit of advice are in order.

The disclaimer is the same as always—this top-100 has nary a quarterback in it. If your fantasy league uses "superflex" spots, then a quarterback is going to go in that spot whenever reasonably possible. They are far and away the most consistent fantasy scorers.

The advice is this: There's an old saying that goes something like, "Once is a fluke. Twice is a coincidence. Three times is a trend." It's still early in the season—there's plenty of time for underperforming players and fantasy teams alike to turn things around. All it takes is one big game to get a player's seasonlong production back on track.

But if you have a wide receiver blowing up on your bench every week while one in your starting lineup lays more eggs than an Australorp, it might be time to make a switch until the guy you drafted as a starter actually starts playing like one.

Panic isn't a good thing in fantasy football. But stubbornness can be just as bad.
