Backstage WWE Rumors: Latest on Karrion Kross, Naomi and Sasha Banks, More

Karrion Kross stunned the wrestling world with his surprise attack on Drew McIntyre during Friday's SmackDown before indicating he is coming for undisputed WWE universal champion Roman Reigns.

Will that occur on September 3 at WWE Clash at the Castle, though?

A new report has the latest on the immediate plans for the former NXT champion and whether the advertised main event of the pay-per-view in Cardiff, Wales will be a Triple Threat match.

That report headlines a collection of rumors that also includes the latest on Kevin Dunn's status with WWE, efforts to bring Naomi and Sasha Banks back to the company and a potential location for the 2023 Royal Rumble.

Despite an explosive return to WWE that appeared to insert him directly into the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship picture alongside Roman Reigns and Drew McIntyre, there are currently no plans to add Karrion Kross to the main event of Clash at the Castle, according to Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio.

While booking may be indicative of a three-way main event at the Principality Stadium, it makes sense that WWE would want to keep Kross out of the title bout for two reasons.

First, forcing him into that contest may create a scenario in which fans feel WWE head of creative Triple H is trying to force a Superstar down their throats and history dictates that rarely works and traditionally only serves to incur a backlash.

Second, there really is no reason to blow through a match of that magnitude so quickly. Let McIntyre and Reigns have their long-anticipated contest and keep The Herald of Doomsday hanging around as if to tell the audience he's up next.

It's clear already that Kross is poised to make a big impact on his return to WWE, a mark he wasn't allowed to make in his first run with the main roster. But there is no reason to rush it. Let him establish himself with the audience first.

It will benefit all involved in the long run.

Meltzer also reported on Saturday Night's Main Event that while things may not be official just yet, Sasha Banks and Naomi reached a deal "in principle" to return to WWE more than a week ago.

The pair walked out of the company prior to the May 16 episode of Raw after being left frustrated with creative plans for the then-WWE women's tag team champions.

Feeling as though they were not being respected as the titleholders and that the belts were being treated like an afterthought, they did not participate in that night's scheduled Six-Pack Challenge match to determine a No. 1 contender to the Raw Women's Championship.

Outside of a recent appearance at the C2E2 convention in Chicago, neither woman has made a public appearance or statement regarding their walkout, keeping fans in the dark about their future plans.

The implementation of a new regime in WWE and its efforts to reach out to the former champions appear to have worked.

That is a good thing for both WWE and the performers.

Banks and Naomi, above all else, are wrestlers. They have devoted their lives to being the best between the ropes that they can be. And the company has put time and effort into presenting them as stars of its women's division and could use their help to bolster an evolving roster.

The recent announcement of the Women's Tag Team Championship Tournament seems like perfect timing and an ideal launching point for their comeback storyline.

Kevin Dunn, the executive producer of WWE programming, is not expected to be released anytime soon by the company's new leadership regime.

That's because it seems WWE does not have anyone available to replace him at this time, according to Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select.

So Dunn, he of the nauseating number of camera cuts during any match or segment, appears safe for the time being. That may be the first bit of bad news to come out of the recent WWE reshuffle at the top, but it is hardly a ringing endorsement, either.

As soon as those in power find someone they believe can step into that role and do what he has done for the company since 1984, one would have to assume his role with WWE will come to an end.

Despite hopes that Triple H taking over as head of creative would reel in some of Dunn's bad habits, his cuts were all over the place again Monday night on Raw, particularly during the brawl between Bianca Belair, Alexa Bliss, Asuka, Bayley, Dakota Kai and Iyo Sky.

WWE has previously presented its annual Royal Rumble pay-per-view from the Alamodome in San Antonio on two occasions (1997, 2017), and if Mike Johnson's report for PWInsider is any indication, it appears the 2023 show could be headed back to the venue for a third time.

The dome holds around 64,000 fans, and given WWE's propensity for large stadium shows these days, it would make sense as a potential home for the fan-favorite event.

The 1997 show featured a homecoming for Shawn Michaels, who put Sycho Sid away with Sweet Chin Music to win the WWE Championship. "Stone Cold" Steve Austin captured his first Rumble victory earlier in the show.

Two decades later, John Cena defeated AJ Styles in a five-star classic to win the WWE title, while Randy Orton won his second men's Royal Rumble match.

With WrestleMania 39 scheduled for Hollywood, and persistent rumors and speculation that Roman Reigns will headline at SoFi Stadium against The Rock, might The Most Electrifying Man in Sports Entertainment make his presence felt?

A dome of that size is the perfect place for such a potentially enormous moment.
