The sky is falling! The end is near! Abandon all hope, ye who enter here!

Well, unless your fantasy football team won in Week 1, in which case…w00t!

There's nothing quite like the first week of a new fantasy football season. When the dust settles, there are only two kinds of teams—undefeated juggernauts and winless tomato cans. (We'll pretend ties don't happen.)

At this point in the season, for better or worse, everyone is overreacting. Fantasy managers are either elated or despondent. There is seemingly no middle ground.

The thing is, we still have a long way to go in the fantasy regular season. So whether you celebrated a win or lamented a defeat, it's time to put that aside and turn your focus to preparing for Week 2.

A good way to get a jump on that is with these position-by-position PPR rankings and analysis of players with juicy (or sour) matchups.

Quarterbacks

The first week of a fantasy football season is always filled with great anticipation. But that anticipation can rapidly turn to anxiety if starters don't perform up to expectations.

Sure enough, a few quarterbacks didn't in Week 1.

Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals at least managed to sneak into the back end of the top 12 quarterbacks in Week 1, but four interceptions and a lost fumble against the Steelers robbed his 338 passing yards and two scores of most of their shine. Tom Brady of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers threw for only 212 yards, one touchdown and one interception against the Dallas Cowboys. Matthew Stafford of the Los Angeles Rams threw three interceptions in a blowout loss to the Buffalo Bills.

Stafford's dud was partly the result of a bad matchup, and Burrow and Brady are good bets to rebound in relatively short order. But the stinkers produced by Green Bay's Aaron Rodgers (195 passing yards, INT) and Trey Lance (218 total yards, INT) are more problematic.

Green Bay's offense looked completely out of sorts in Week 1 against the Vikings. Lance flat-out played poorly in a loss to the Chicago Bears.

Until San Francisco's young quarterback and Green Bay's receivers show some signs of life, both are shaky starting options at best for fantasy managers.

GOOD MATCHUPS

Derek Carr, Las Vegas Raiders (vs. ARI) [DraftKings DFS Value: $6,200]

Carr had a shaky 2022 debut of his own, falling outside of the top 20 fantasy quarterbacks after throwing three picks against the Los Angeles Chargers. He should rebound Sunday against an Arizona Cardinals defense that Patrick Mahomes just lit up for 360 passing yards and five passing touchdowns.

Matthew Stafford, Los Angeles Rams (vs. ATL) [DraftKings DFS Value: $6,300]

Stafford wasn't good in the Rams' season opener. He finished with 240 passing yards, one touchdown pass and three picks in a 21-point loss to the Bills. But Week 2 sets up well for him to bounce back. The Atlanta Falcons just gave up a top-10 effort to Jameis Winston and surrendered the third-most fantasy points to quarterbacks last season.

BAD MATCHUPS

Tom Brady, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (at NO) [DraftKings DFS Value: $6,400]

Brady will likely shake off his early funk and go on to have a fine season. After all, he's Tom Brady. But his numbers against the New Orleans Saints during his two seasons in Tampa aren't great. The last time the two teams met, Brady threw for just 214 yards, zero touchdowns and an interception.

Kirk Cousins, Minnesota Vikings (at PHI) [DraftKings DFS Value: $6,400]

Cousins looked good in Week 1 against the Packers, throwing for 277 yards and two scores in a Vikings victory. But the Eagles allowed the ninth-fewest fantasy points to quarterbacks in 2021, and Cousins' struggles in prime-time games are well-documented.

SLEEPER

Jared Goff, Detroit Lions (vs. WAS) [DraftKings DFS Value: $5,400]

Goff was neither great nor terrible in Week 1, throwing for 215 yards and two scores on the way to a top-20 fantasy finish among quarterbacks. But this week should be better, for him as the Commanders led the league in fantasy points given up to quarterbacks last season.

Running Backs

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - SEPTEMBER 11: Quarterback Daniel Jones #8 of the New York Giants hands the ball off to running back Saquon Barkley #26 of the New York Giants during the second half against the Tennessee Titans at Nissan Stadium on September 11, 2022 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Photo by Wesley Hitt/Getty Images)

If you drafted Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor or New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley this summer, you should be thrilled after Week 1.

Given that Taylor was the first overall pick in most drafts, he was expected to go off. But still, seeing him pile up 175 total yards and a touchdown on 35 touches against the Houston Texans was promising.

Barkley had far more uncertainty surrounding him after an injury-marred 2021 campaign. But the fifth-year veteran answered any questions in emphatic fashion against the Tennessee Titans, steamrolling his way to 194 yards and a touchdown on 24 touches. He wound up being the highest-scoring RB in Week 1.

However, it wasn't all good news at the position. San Francisco 49ers running back Elijah Mitchell suffered a knee injury that is expected to sideline him for the next two months, while Pittsburgh Steelers running back Najee Harris went down with a foot injury.

Harris has said he intends to play Sunday, but Mitchell is headed to injured reserve—leaving some fantasy managers scrambling just one week into the season.

GOOD MATCHUPS

Antonio Gibson, Washington Commanders (at DET) [DraftKings DFS Value: $6,200]

A few weeks ago, it appeared that Gibson could be the odd man out in the Washington backfield. Now, after piling up 130 total yards on 21 touches in Week 1 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, he's a borderline RB1 against a Detroit Lions defense that just allowed well over 200 rushing yards against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Kareem Hunt, Cleveland Browns (vs. NYJ) [DraftKings DFS Value: $6,600]

Hunt took a back seat to Nick Chubb last week against the Carolina Panthers. But what he lost in quantity, he made up for in quality by finding the end zone twice. The Baltimore Ravens didn't do much on the ground last week against the New York Jets, but no team allowed more fantasy points to running backs last season than Gang Green.

BAD MATCHUPS

Derrick Henry, Tennessee (at BUF) [DraftKings DFS Value: $8,300

Henry got off to a relatively slow start to the 2022 season, logging 82 yards on 21 carries against the New York Giants. The Buffalo Bills were a middling fantasy matchup for running backs last year, but the game script in this one could force the Titans to go pass-heavy.

Alvin Kamara, New Orleans Saints (vs. TB) [DraftKings DFS Value: $7,400]

Kamara wasn't much of a factor last week against the Falcons, managing just 46 total yards on 12 touches. That isn't likely to change Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who put the clamps on the Dallas Cowboys' ground game in Week 1. Kamara was also dealing with a "rib issue" in Week 1, so fantasy managers might want to consider a Plan B.

SLEEPER

Jeff Wilson Jr., San Francisco 49ers (vs. SEA) [DraftKings DFS Value: $5,100]

With Mitchell on the shelf, Wilson will probably assume lead back duties for the Niners. Against the Chicago Bears, that equated to only nine carries for 22 yards. But the Seattle Seahawks led the NFC last season in PPR points given up to running backs, so he should post a better stat line in Week 2.

WEEK 2 RUNNING BACK RANKINGS

2. Christian McCaffrey, CAR (at NYG)

Wide Receivers

It was quite the week for big-name wide receivers playing for new teams.

Tyreek Hill was busy in his first game with Miami Dolphins, reeling in eight of 12 targets for 94 yards. Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts directed almost half (13) of his 32 pass attempts toward A.J. Brown, who hauled in 10 of those targets for 155 yards. Davante Adams of the Las Vegas Raiders one-upped them both, turning a week-leading 17 targets into 10 catches for 141 yards and a touchdown.

With the new guys having such big games, the incumbent receivers largely suffered as a result. Jaylen Waddle of the Dolphins was bailed out by a 42-yard touchdown pass, ending the day with a 4/69/1 line. But Hunter Renfrow of the Raiders caught only three passes for 21 yards against the Chargers, and DeVonta Smith of the Eagles didn't catch any of his four targets against the Detroit Lions.

One game is far too small of a sample size to make sweeping judgments of the prospects for players like Smith and Renfrow this season. But there's cause for at least some concern with these second bananas until they start seeing more targets.

GOOD MATCHUPS

DeVonta Smith, Philadelphia Eagles (vs. MIN) [DraftKings DFS Value: $4,900]

Many fantasy managers might be tempted to kick Smith to the waiver wire after a Week 1 goose egg. However, Minnesota's defensive effort last week had more to do with Green Bay's lack of passing-game weapons than a Vikings defense that allowed the most PPR points to wideouts in 2021.

Amon-Ra St. Brown, Detroit Lions (vs. WAS) [DraftKings DFS Value: $6,500]

St. Brown was solid for fantasy managers in Week 1, posting an 8/64/1 line on 12 targets against the Eagles. The good times should keep rolling in Week 2. The Commanders gave up a big game last week to Christian Kirk and allowed the second-most PPR points to receivers last season.

BAD MATCHUPS

Treylon Burks, Tennessee Titans (at BUF) [DraftKings DFS Value: $4,600]

Burks was OK in his NFL debut, catching three passes on five targets for 55 yards. He was also targeted more than veteran Robert Woods. But the entire Titans passing game is off-limits in a terrible matchup against a stifling Buffalo Bills defense that just put the clamps on the Los Angeles Rams.

Diontae Johnson, Pittsburgh Steelers (vs. NE) [DraftKings DFS Value: $5,800]

Johnson's 7/55/0 line on 12 targets against the Cincinnati Bengals wasn't great, but considering Pittsburgh's offensive issues, it wasn't terrible either. But with Najee Harris less than 100 percent, Johnson is arguably Pittsburgh's best offensive weapon. New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has long been a proponent of taking an opponent's top weapon away, which could mean bracket coverage for Johnson.

SLEEPER

Curtis Samuel, Washington Commanders (at DET) [DraftKings DFS Value: $4,600]

Samuel showed what he's capable of when healthy against the Jacksonville Jaguars, parlaying 12 touches into 72 yards and a touchdown. The Lions aren't a great wide receiver matchup, but double-digit touches at least place Samuel on the flex radar.

WEEK 2 WIDE RECEIVER RANKINGS

Tight Ends

In a week where Kyle Pitts of the Atlanta Falcons was all but invisible, Mark Andrews of the Baltimore Ravens had a so-so game and George Kittle of the San Francisco 49ers didn't even play, King Travis the First staked an early claim to the throne of the No. 1 tight end in fantasy football.

The Arizona Cardinals had no answer for Travis Kelce on Sunday. The veteran tight end piled up eight catches for 121 yards and a touchdown, which was his 30th career time topping the 100-yard mark. Tony Gonzalez and Rob Gronkowski are the only two tight ends in NFL history with more 100-yard games, according to Charlie Goldman of Chiefs Wire.

Is 26.1 PPR points for a tight end a lot? It seems like a lot.

GOOD MATCHUPS

Dalton Schultz, Dallas Cowboys (vs. CIN) [DraftKings DFS Value: $5,200]

Dak Prescott's thumb injury is a blow to all the Cowboys pass-catchers. But Cooper Rush is more likely to throw short passes over the middle than attack Cincinnati's defense vertically. That means targets for Schultz in a favorable fantasy matchup for tight ends.

Irv Smith Jr., Minnesota Vikings (at PHI) {DraftKings DFS Value: $3,400]

This call will likely generate some side-eye after Smith played only 19 snaps and failed to record a catch in Week 1. But Smith was being eased back in after missing a chunk of camp, and he'll likely see a larger role in Week 2 in a plus matchup for the position against the Philadelphia Eagles.

BAD MATCHUPS

O.J. Howard, Houston Texans (at DEN) [DraftKings DFS Value: $3,000]

After catching two touchdown passes against the Indianapolis Colts last week, Howard was a popular Week 2 waiver wire target. But that big game came in one of the best fantasy matchups for tight ends last year. This week, Howard draws one of the worst. He's likely coming back to earth Sunday with a thud.

Dawson Knox, Buffalo Bills (vs. TEN) [DraftKings DFS Value: $3,800]

Knox already left fantasy managers in a lurch once, posting a single catch for five yards in last week's win over the Los Angeles Rams. Don't expect a major turnaround Monday night against the Tennessee Titans, who gave up the sixth-fewest PPR points to tight ends last season.

SLEEPER

Evan Engram, Jacksonville Jaguars (vs. IND) [DraftKings DFS Value: $3,600]

Engram didn't make a huge impact in his first game with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He finished with four catches for 28 yards on four targets against the Washington Commanders. He could see more action Sunday against an Indianapolis Colts team that gave up the third-most PPR points to tight ends last season.

WEEK 2 TIGHT END RANKINGS

1. Travis Kelce, KC (vs. LAC)

2. Mark Andrews, BAL (vs. MIA)

Kickers and Defenses

(Photo by John Byrum/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images)

No position is more difficult to predict early in the season than team defenses. So much of the value of defenses lies in matchups, but what we think we know early in the year and what we actually do are wildly different.

It wasn't surprising to see elite defenses like the Buffalo Bills and Tampa Bay Buccaneers do well in Week 1, even in what appeared to be sketchy matchups with the Los Angeles Rams and Dallas Cowboys. What was surprising was seeing the Pittsburgh Steelers shine against the Cincinnati Bengals to the tune of seven sacks, five takeaways and a defensive touchdown on the way to the top stat line at the position.

Just one week into the 2022 season, the matchup landscape is already shifting under our feet. With Dak Prescott out and Cooper Rush under center, Dallas has gone from one of the league's best offenses to a team to target. Ditto for the Steelers, who struggled to move the ball against the Bengals and who now have a banged-up running back.

GOOD MATCHUPS

Indianapolis Colts Defense (at JAX) [DraftKings DFS Value: $3,500]

The Colts didn't play especially well last week against the Houston Texans, and the Jacksonville Jaguars showed some fight against Washington. But you have to think the Colts will be up to avenge last year's Week 18 collapse against a Jaguars team that led the league in fantasy points allowed to defenses in 2021.

Cade York, Cleveland Browns (vs. NYJ)

The rookie from LSU banged through a 58-yard field goal last week to lift the Browns to a win over the Carolina Panthers. On Sunday in Cleveland, he'll face the second-friendliest fantasy matchup for the kicker position last year in the New York Jets.

BAD MATCHUPS

New Orleans Saints Defense (vs. TB) [DraftKings DFS Value: $2,400]

There's good reason why the Saints are a dirt-cheap DFS play this week. New Orleans underperformed in what looked like a favorable fantasy matchup in Week 1 and draws a Tampa Bay Buccaneers team Sunday that gave up the second-fewest fantasy points in the league to defenses in 2021.

Chris Boswell, Pittsburgh Steelers (vs. NE)

The Steelers offense struggled to move the ball last week even before Najee Harris suffered a foot injury. Add in a Patriots team that surrendered the second-fewest fantasy points to kickers in 2022, and he's a pass.

SLEEPER

Cincinnati Bengals Defense (at DAL) [DraftKings DFS Value ($2,200]

The Bengals appear to be priced as though they were facing Dak Prescott and a Cowboys offense that led the NFL in both yards and points per game last season. They, um, are not. The Bengals should also be able to generate pressure against a suspect Cowboys offensive line Sunday.

Before we get to this week's list of the Top 100 players overall for Week 2—a list that can help you make your flex calls—the usual note and bit of friendly advice.

No quarterbacks are included on this list. If your fantasy league has a superflex spot, you're almost always going to put a quarterback in there. Even if that quarterback is Geno Smith, who looked surprisingly competent against the Denver Broncos on Monday night.

The bit of advice is this: Chill out.

It's an annual occurrence in fantasy leagues. After months of waiting, we finally get a weekend of football that counts, and everyone loses their minds.

Are there valid takeaways to be had from what we saw in Week 1? Yes. Saquon Barkley looked outstanding. Michael Thomas appears to be back. The Buffalo Bills look like the class of the league.

But just because Allen Robinson II and DeVonta Smith spent Week 1 on a milk carton doesn't mean they will stay there. Just because Rex Burkhead led the Texans in backfield touches doesn't make rookie Dameon Pierce a bust already.

It's one week, and given how little time most starters play in the preseason, it isn't an especially predictive one.

If you took a loss in Week 1, it isn't the end of the world. My career record the first week of the year is…ungood. But by season's end, I'm in the playoffs far more often than not.

There's a long way to go. So don't go making knee-jerk roster moves. You'll regret them.
