Raiders' Top Hypothetical Trade Packages for Derek Carr

The first order of business for new Las Vegas Raiders general manager Dave Ziegler and head coach Josh McDaniels is going to be deciding what to do with Derek Carr and the quarterback position. 

There is no more important position in sports than signal-caller. Having been on the Patriots staff with Tom Brady and having worked with Tim Tebow during his time as head coach in Denver, McDaniels knows this as well as anyone. 

The question is whether the new duo in charge see Carr as the kind of quarterback who can take the Raiders where they want to go. 

With one year left on his contract, the Raiders have three options: Extend the quarterback and have their future at the position locked up, trade him while he still has value or ride out the season and risk losing him in free agency. 

All three have merit, but for the sake of this exercise, we are going to focus on the possibility of trading him. Here are three packages that should pique Las Vegas' interest. 

Raiders Receive: QB Aaron Rodgers

Packers Receive: QB Derek Carr, 2022 first-round draft pick (No. 22 overall), third-round draft pick (No. 86 overall), 2023 first-round pick

On Sunday, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN told SportsCenter the Packers are adamant they want Aaron Rodgers back next season. That's not going to quell the buzz around the quarterback getting traded, though. 

The discontent between the 38-year-old and the franchise was a huge story all of last offseason, and the Packers' early exit from the playoffs isn't likely to make the talk get any quieter. 

Should the Packers realize they don't want the hassle anymore but still want to contend right now, it would make sense that they would be interested in Carr. 

Not only did the 30-year-old just lead the Raiders to a playoff appearance, but his relationship with former Fresno State teammate Davante Adams could also be useful in helping them retain the receiver. Adams said in June last year that it would be a dream to play with Carr again. 

The Raiders could leverage that to join the Rodgers sweepstakes and immediately have one of the best passers in the game. 

This package would look similar to the one the Rams used to get Matthew Stafford from Detroit. 

Raiders Receive: 2022 first-round pick (No. 11 overall), 2022 third-round pick and 2023 first-round pick

Commanders Receive: QB Derek Carr

This one comes from Pro Football Focus and remains one of the best and more realistic packages for Carr.

The site connects the dots between Washington defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio and Carr, who was the quarterback during the coach's tenure with the Raiders.  

The Commanders are coming off of a 7-10 season, which marked the fourth time in five years they have won seven games. At this point, they would be thrilled to have the season the Raiders had in 2021. In fact, it could save Ron Rivera's job. 

The quarterbacks who could be available with the 11th pick aren't the kind you want to start Day 1. There's likely to be at least one team that talks itself into taking a signal-caller in the top 10, but it would be surprising to see any of them be a huge upgrade over Taylor Heinicke or Ryan Fitzpatrick in Year 1. 

Carr would be, though. So while the Raiders may feel like they need a reset at the position to get to new heights, he's a huge upgrade from what Washington has had since Kirk Cousins left town in 2018. 

In return, the Raiders would get the No. 11 pick, a third-rounder and another first next year. The first-rounder in 2023 could be crucial as it could help them trade up for a quarterback of the future when Alabama's Bryce Young and Ohio State's C.J. Stroud may be declaring for the draft. 

It's a move that sets them up for a rough 2022, but could pay off in a big way down the road. 

Raiders Receive: QB Daniel Jones, 2022 first-round pick (No. 5 overall), 2023 second-round pick

Giants Receive: QB Derek Carr

This is the Raiders' best shot at getting a blue-chip prospect out of trading away their quarterback. The fact that they get a QB in Daniel Jones who still has some upside is a bonus. 

It's easy to dismiss the Giants signal-caller based on what he did this season. He went 4-7 as the starter in New York and threw 10 touchdowns to seven interceptions in his third season. 

But that doesn't take into consideration just how bad the Giants have been as an organization. Jones' head coaches and offensive coordinators while in New York have included Pat Shurmur, Joe Judge, Mike Shula, Jason Garrett and Freddie Kitchens.

Jones' best work came as a rookie when he threw for 24 touchdowns to 12 interceptions. The fact he never progressed could be on coaching and support just as much as the 24-year-old. 

This deal would allow the Raiders to pick up a significant building block through the draft, give Jones a fresh start and give them another good pick in the 2023 draft if they have to start over at quarterback.
