On Saturday, shorthanded Michigan beat Ohio State 45-23 in Columbus to remain undefeated and continue their trajectory towards the College Football Playoff.

That was quite the feat considering that Blake Corum, their Heisman contender, couldn't go because of the knee injury he suffered against Illinois.

With the win, the Wolverines moved up one spot to No. 2 in the AP Top 25 rankings, while the Buckeyes moved down three spots to No. 5 and likely out of the CFP hunt.

That means that they could be headed to the "Granddaddy of Them All" for the second straight season.

And while Ohio State wasn't exactly aiming for a return to Pasadena for the iconic bowl game, the New Year's Day classic is still quite the consolation prize for teams on the outside looking in at the CFP.

As for the Rose Bowl selection process, if a team from the Big Ten or Pac-12 is selected for the CFP like USC if it wins this week, the Tournament of Roses will normally pick the next-highest CFP-ranked team from that conference.

That means that Washington has a good chance to be the Buckeyes' opponent on Jan. 1.

Here's a look at the schedule, odds and predictions for the big game.

Ohio State vs. Washington

It's no secret that Ohio State doesn't want to find itself in the Rose Bowl again.

But there's a price to pay for that lopsided loss to Michigan, and unless TCU and USC lose this coming week, it's pretty much a done deal that the Buckeyes will be headed out West for New Year's Day.

Now here's the rub: There's a chance that there will be some apprehension that the Tournament of Roses would invite the same team out in consecutive years, so it's not an impossibility that a team like Penn State could get the call instead.

But rules are rules, and it's unlikely that the selection committee will let personal preferences bleed into a merit-based equation.

So it's a safe bet that C.J. Stroud will be playing near his native Rancho Cucamonga again to start off 2023.

But that all depends on the Trojans beating Utah this coming weekend.

"Ohio State has nice wins over Penn State and Notre Dame," CFP selection committee chairman Boo Corrigan told Isaiah Hole of USA Today. "And again, that Michigan game was a whole lot closer early in the fourth quarter than it was, but then you look at USC and their recent wins over UCLA and Notre Dame, they also have a win over Oregon State. Their one loss is, you probably remember this, a two-point conversion against Utah in an emotionally charged game.

"As we looked at the full body of work of both teams, we came out with USC in the No. 4 spot and Ohio State in the No. 5 spot."

But if USC hold on against the Utes, they'll likely get in the CFP, making way for Washington to get the call to take on Ohio State at Rose Bowl Stadium.

If that brings on a case of déjà vu for anyone, it's because it would be a rematch of the 2019 Rose Bowl when the Buckeyes beat the Huskies 28-23 to send former head coach Urban Meyer out on a high note.

Outside of the loss to the Wolverines, Ohio State is on a roll offensively. Stroud was a leading contender for the Heisman based on his 3,340 passing yards and 37 touchdowns (tied for first in the NCAA), with only three interceptions.

The Buckeyes will need to be firing on all cylinders when they go up against the Huskies.

Had it not been for the 45-38 loss to Arizona State back in October, Washington might be in USC's shoes right now as an 11-1 team poised for CFP consideration.

But that's a big what-if, and those don't count. What does count is the fact that the Huskies have won six straight since its loss to ASU.

And they've done it behind quarterback Michael Penix Jr., who is leading the nation in passing yards with 4,354, to go along with 29 passing TDs (seven interceptions).

Ohio State's defense was exposed by Michigan's aerial attack, so if Penix gets it going with his arm, it could be a long day for the team out of Columbus.
