Why Jade Cargill's AEW Win Streak Must Roll On Into 2023

Jade Cargill's undefeated streak doesn't have much juice left, but it would be booking malpractice for it to end before the year is through.
Jade Cargill's undefeated streak doesn't have much juice left, but it would be booking malpractice for it to end before the year is through.

Of the many promising prospects who aren't receiving nearly enough television time in All Elite Wrestling at the moment, Jade Cargill is chief among them, though her long-standing undefeated streak in singles competition remains one of the promotion's most compelling stories.

The 30-year-old has had a better build in the last two years than a majority of the current roster, male or female. After dominating the women's division throughout 2021, she became the inaugural AEW TBS champion at the onset of 2022 and has been unstoppable ever since.

She's also come into her own as a performer during this period and improved immensely in every area. As big of a star as she's turned into, it's clear her character is ready for the next chapter to avoid growing stale.

Of course, Cargill won't go unbeaten forever, and whoever hands her that first loss will benefit big time. That has led fans to wonder whether her streak should be snapped sooner rather than later, particularly before 2022 comes to a close.

Although now isn't the right time for her to finally fall, it's safe to say her days as champ are numbered and her winning ways won't last for much longer.

Nyla Rose Merely a Filler Feud for Cargill

There are less than two months left in 2022, and the best possible place for Cargill to suffer her first defeat would be at the Full Gear pay-per-view on November 19.

If she winds up defending her AEW TBS Championship against Nyla Rose at the event as she's expected to, there is little to no chance she will lose...and nor should she.

The two have been at odds for many weeks, and at no point has Rose felt like a legitimate threat to the title. Despite the challenger's own accolades as a former AEW women's world champion, the feud has severely lacked drama.

If Rose is the biggest name Cargill faces for the remainder of the year, under no circumstance should she lose. It's possible she has a much more important title defense at Winter Is Coming in December, but it's much more likely AEW will want her to surpass the one-year mark as champion.

To her credit, Rose has done her best to make the storyline as interesting and entertaining as possible, but she gains nothing from beating the titleholder given she is already established.

The program is primarily designed to keep Cargill busy and extend her undefeated streak.

Getting to 50-0

Cargill last competed on the November 2 edition of Dynamite, when she successfully defended her AEW TBS Championship against Marina Shafir. With that win, she extended her streak to 41-0.

AEW has made a major deal about the consecutive string of wins she has amassed over the last year and a half, posting the updated number on the video wall following each victory. Thus, it's hard to imagine the promotion not waiting until she reaches 50-0 to have her lose.

At this point, she's close enough to the milestone that it would be a waste for it to end before then. That just means she'll have to spin her wheels in the meantime with more matches like those we've seen her involved in lately.

That isn't necessarily a bad thing, though. No one will expect Cargill to lose to a random enhancement talent, but certain stars can give her more of a challenge and put her lengthy streak in true jeopardy.

Since Cargill doesn't compete often, AEW will have to make her matches more frequent so it isn't spring 2023 when she scores her monumental 50th win.

Building Up a Viable Star to Dethrone Her

The biggest issue with Cargill's undefeated streak is AEW figuring out an appropriate endgame, and so far, no one on the active roster stands out as being the correct person to dethrone her.

The only competitor to come close to pulling it off was Kris Statlander over the summer. She and Athena were both gunning for the gold heading into All Out, and simply based on how prominently she was being pushed on television, all signs pointed to her being the one to beat Cargill.

The 27-year-old is one of AEW's few homegrown female stars and would have been the perfect candidate to take the title, but an untimely injury robbed her of that opportunity. It also caused the company to go back to the drawing board without anyone else in mind.

AEW must spend these coming months building up someone who can believably beat Cargill and take their career to the next level. Although she's set to challenge for the AEW Interim Women's World Championship at Full Gear, Jamie Hayter feels like a strong choice considering how organically over she is right now.

Regardless of who it is, though, AEW can't waste any more time with Cargill facing strictly nobodies. Her next feud should be the one where she loses the title, and that could be as soon as early 2023 ahead of Revolution if not at the pay-per-view itself.

What's Next Once Cargill Is No Longer Champion?

Does Jade Cargill need to remain in title contention at all times to continue to feel special?
Does Jade Cargill need to remain in title contention at all times to continue to feel special?

Cargill has been AEW TBS champion for so long that it's difficult to remember there being a time when she wasn't carrying gold.

Part of her appeal at that point was her undefeated streak, so once she loses both of those things, AEW must tread carefully with how she's booked to ensure she isn't lost in the shuffle.

She has proved herself as such a star and been built up so incredibly well that she'll always be a fixture on television in some form or fashion. She will continue to generate new fans for the product as long as she's featured.

However, it isn't necessary for her to be constantly challenging for gold once this reign runs its course. AEW ran into that issue this year with Britt Baker, so creating compelling feuds outside of the title pictures will be the key in keeping her relevant.

Along with finding a worthy successor, determining Cargill's post-TBS title should be seen as a top priority for AEW. Waiting any longer will put her run at risk of losing its luster, whereas it deserves an epic conclusion before she ascends even further up the card.
