Fantasy Football Big Board: Complete PPR Player Rankings for Week 8

It seems like only yesterday that the 2022 fantasy season was just starting. But after seven weeks of action, the fantasy regular season is halfway over.

So far, it's been a good year for managers who paid retail for a high-end quarterback like Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills. The same holds true for the managers who banked on a rebound season from New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley, for just about anyone who took an elite wide receiver and those who splurged for Travis Kelce or Mark Andrews at tight end.

However, if you tried to get value at quarterback with a mid-round veteran, that hasn't panned out so well. Neither has spending the No. 1 pick on Jonathan Taylor or using a first-rounder on Najee Harris. Investing in Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts, yeah, that hasn't gone well, either.

It just goes to show that while some players are absolutely as advertised, the values of many fantasy assets can change quickly.

Success in fantasy means knowing which players are headed for a huge week and which ones could be on the verge of a massive letdown. It means knowing which matchups to target and which to avoid while maintaining a clear picture of the fantasy landscape for the week to come.

That feels like a segue.

Smooth, wasn't it?

Quarterbacks

For the first six weeks of the 2022 season, the quarterback position was essentially the "Fantastic Four." You either had shares of Jalen Hurts, Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes or Lamar Jackson or you, um, did not. And if you didn't, you found yourself in a weekly hole at the position.

However, it appears the "Fantastic Four" has now become the "Fabulous Five." Joe Cool is crashing the party.

Last week against the Atlanta Falcons, Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals threw for a whopping 481 yards and three touchdowns. It was the second successive week in which Burrow threw for at least 300 yards with three touchdown passes. Over the past month, Burrow is the highest-scoring quarterback in fantasy football.

During that same span, Jackson has quietly ranked outside the top 20 in fantasy points per game.

The fantasy gods giveth. And the fantasy gods taketh away.

So, maybe we're actually back to four, anyway.

Good Matchups

Tua Tagovailoa, Miami Dolphins (at DET) (DraftKings DFS Value: $6,200)

Tagovailoa's return to action last week against the Steelers was relatively modest from a statistical standpoint—261 passing yards and a single touchdown. But if ever there was a cure for all that ails an underperforming offensive player, it's Detroit's nonexistent defense.

Jameis Winston, New Orleans Saints (vs. LV) (DraftKings DFS Value $5,300)

After Andy Dalton threw two pick-sixes in Week 6, odds are good that we'll see Winston back under center this week against a Raiders defense that ranks toward the top of the league in fantasy points per game allowed to quarterbacks this season.

Bad Matchups

Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers (at BUF) (DraftKings DFS Value: $6,000]

It has been a long season for fantasy managers who went the veteran route at quarterback, and that includes Rodgers—he's 15th in fantasy points among quarterbacks and hasn't had a 20-point game this season. That's not likely to change on the road against the Bills' stifling defense.

Matthew Stafford, Los Angeles Rams (vs. SF) (DraftKings DFS Value: $6,000)

Yes, we just saw Mahomes light up the San Francisco defense for over 400 passing yards and three touchdowns. But Matthew Stafford isn't Patrick Mahomes, and the Rams offense has struggled to move the ball consistently this season.

Sleeper

Davis Mills, Houston Texans (vs. TEN) (DraftKings DFS Value: $5,200)

Mills quietly had himself a day against the Las Vegas Raiders, eclipsing 300 passing yards and tossing a pair of touchdowns. He gets a similarly favorable passing-game matchup this week against the Titans in a game Houston will once again likely be playing from behind.

Running Backs

The running back position saw a major fantasy shakeup in Week 7—for better and for worse.

The first tremor occurred just as the week was getting underway. On Thursday night, the San Francisco 49ers sent a package of picks to the Carolina Panthers for Christian McCaffrey. McCaffrey's Niners debut was a quiet one, but once he gets up to speed in Kyle Shanahan's offense, the sky is the limit.

McCaffrey's departure from Carolina also opened up a hole in the Panthers backfield, and while expectations weren't high for D'Onta Foreman or Chuba Hubbard in a bad matchup with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Foreman topped 100 yards on the ground and both players posted double-digit PPR points in the game.

The news wasn't as good later Sunday afternoon. Rookie running back Breece Hall of the New York Jets had emerged as a superstar in the making and a fantasy RB1 over the past month. But his brilliant first season came to a crashing halt Sunday when he tore his ACL against the Denver Broncos.

Injuries are part of fantasy football. But that one was a gut-punch.

Good Matchups

Tony Pollard, Dallas Cowboys (at CHI) (DraftKings DFS Value: $6,100)

With Ezekiel Elliott (knee) looking unlikely to play Sunday against the Bears, Pollard steps into a featured role against a Chicago defense that has surrendered the eighth-most PPR points per game to running backs this season.

Raheem Mostert, Miami Dolphins (at DET) (DraftKings DFS Value: $5,900)

Mostert has quietly taken control of the Miami backfield. Over the past three weeks, he's a top-15 PPR running back. Now, Mostert gets to face the 11 matadors that are the Detroit defense, as the Lions are allowing a whopping 162.8 yards per game on the ground.

Bad Matchups

Michael Carter, New York Jets (vs. NE) (DraftKings DFS Value: $5,900)

Carter isn't Breece Hall, but he did lead the Jets in rushing last year while averaging a respectable 4.3 yards per carry. With that said, he starts his tenure as the starter in one of the absolute worst fantasy matchups for running backs in 2022, and the arrival of James Robinson saps another chunk of his fantasy upside.

David Montgomery, Chicago Bears (vs. DAL) (DraftKings DFS Value: $6,300)

Fantasy managers with shares of Montgomery and Khalil Herbert need to exercise a measure of patience right now. The Bears are just mired in a stretch of brutal running back matchups, including Sunday against a Dallas team allowing the third-fewest fantasy points per game to running backs this year.

Sleeper

Antonio Gibson, Washington Commanders (at IND) (DraftKings DFS Value: $5,600)

Gibson has ostensibly taken a back seat to Brian Robinson Jr. in Washington. But last week against the Packers, Gibson still had 13 touches for 77 yards and a touchdown. He's on the "flex" radar this week against a Colts team that has struggled defending running backs this season.

Wide Receivers

Fantasy football can be a wildly unpredictable game. Many times, what we think we know entering a season and the reality of a campaign go together about as well as marshmallows and mustard.

But where the top of the wide receiver rankings are concerned seven weeks in, it's all about the chalk.

The No. 1 wide receiver in terms of average draft position this year at Fantasy Pros was Cooper Kupp. Right now, he ranks second in PPR points, just behind Stefon Diggs, who was fifth in ADP. Tyreek Hill is third in points and was seventh in ADP. Davante Adams is fourth and sixth, and Justin Jefferson is second and fifth.

Keenen Allen of the Chargers is the only wideout with an ADP inside the top 10 at his position who could reasonably be considered a "bust" seven weeks in.

For some time, supporters of taking a wide receiver in Round 1 have pointed to the "safety" of doing so—relative to a running back—as a selling point for that strategy.

Seven weeks into this season, the numbers support that assertion.

Good Matchups

D.J. Moore, Carolina Panthers (at ATL) (DraftKings DFS Value: $5,300)

Stop the presses! There was a D.J. Moore sighting last week! Moore caught seven of 10 targets for 69 yards and a touchdown against the Buccaneers, and now he gets a Falcons defense that leads the league in PPR fantasy points per game allowed to wide receivers.

Deebo Samuel, San Francisco 49ers (at LAR) (DraftKings DFS Value: $7,500)

Samuel picked up a hamstring injury that has him labeled "day to day" ahead of the second meeting between the Rams and Niners this season. But San Francisco absolutely cannot afford to lose this game, and Samuel posted a 6/115/1 line on seven targets the last time these teams met.

Bad Matchups

Terry McLaurin, Washington Commanders (at IND) (DraftKings DFS Value: $6,000)

McLaurin saw an uptick in targets last week against the Packers with Taylor Heinicke under center. It's not going to be easy to make hay against the Colts, though—Indy is seventh against the pass and last in the league in fantasy points per game allowed to wide receivers.

DK Metcalf, Seattle Seahawks (at NYG) [DraftKings DFS Value: $6,600]

From all indications, Metcalf avoided a serious knee injury last week, and he's reportedly already lobbying to practice this week. But in addition to being banged up, Metcalf also draws a surprisingly poor Week 8 matchup with a Giants defense allowing the fewest fantasy points per game in the NFC to wide receivers.

Sleeper

Parris Campbell, Indianapolis Colts (vs. WAS) (DraftKings DFS Value: $4,500)

After being mostly invisible the first five weeks of the season, Campbell had himself a coming-out party the past two games—23 targets, 17 catches and a score in two straight games. Campbell should again see quite a few dump-off targets this week with Sam Ehlinger taking over at quarterback.

Tight Ends

ATLANTA, GA OCTOBER 16: San Francisco tight end George Kittle (85) warms up prior to the start of the NFL game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Atlanta Falcons on October 16th, 2022 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, GA. (Photo by Rich von Biberstein/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images)

Depending on how caught up you are on obscure holidays, you may not have known that this past Sunday was National Tight Ends Day. That is, unless you watched the showdown between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers, in which case, there was no avoiding it.

Had you turned mentions of it into a drinking game, you would have passed out by halftime.

It was a game that featured two of the very best in the NFL at the position. George Kittle of the 49ers is widely credited with starting National Tight Ends Day (actually, it was Jimmy Garoppolo's idea—sort of). Travis Kelce of the Chiefs is widely regarded as the gold standard at the position.

Neither disappointed. As a matter of fact, both tight ends posted identical stat lines. Kittle did it on one more target than Kelce, but both stars caught six passes for 98 yards. However, one of Kittle's targets went for a touchdown, so he won the battle between the two. He also posted the most PPR points of any tight end in Week 7, so I suppose that makes him the king of National Tight Ends Day.

He'd likely exchange that title for a do-over on San Francisco's lopsided loss, though.

Good Matchups

T.J. Hockenson, Detroit Lions (vs. MIA) (DraftKings DFS Value: $4,900)

Outside of one gonzo effort against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 4, Hockenson has been a significant disappointment in 2022. But this week's matchup with the Dolphins sets up well. Miami has allowed the seventh-most PPR points per game to tight ends this season.

Irv Smith Jr., Minnesota Vikings (at ARI) (DraftKings DFS Value: $3,500)

When last we saw Smith, he was catching four passes against Miami Dolphins...for seven yards. However, one of those catches went for a score, and in Week 8, Smith faces a Cardinals defense that has been lit up by opposing tight ends more than once this year.

Bad Matchups

George Kittle, San Francisco 49ers (at LAR) (DraftKings DFS Value: $5,700)

Far be it from us to spoil the reign of King George I, but the Rams have allowed fewer PPR points per game to tight ends this season than any team in the league. The last time the 49ers and Rams met, Kittle caught just two passes for 24 yards.

Dalton Schultz, Dallas Cowboys (at CHI) (DraftKings DFS Value: $3,700)

With Dak Prescott back under center last week, Schultz saw a bump in usage that was no doubt welcomed by fantasy managers. But this week's bottom-five fantasy matchup for tight ends with the Bears could slow his return to fantasy relevance.

Sleeper

Juwan Johnson, New Orleans Saints (vs. LV) (DraftKings DFS Value: $3,200)

Johnson was a surprise standout for fantasy managers last week, posting a 5/32/2 line against the Arizona Cardinals. With a second successive favorable matchup on tap with the Raiders, Johnson is the proverbial hot hand. Ride him.

Week 8 Tight End Rankings

Kickers and Defenses

In 2021, the Dallas Cowboys defense led the league in fantasy points thanks to generating the most takeaways in the NFL. It was a great season to be sure, but turnovers can be a fluky sta. Thus, in most fantasy drafts over the summer, the Cowboys were relegated to low-end weekly starter status.

As it turns out, the folks who drafted Dallas are reaping the rewards...again.

After putting the clamps on the Detroit Lions in Week 7 (an effort that included five sacks and an equal number of takeaways), the Cowboys are once again the No. 1 defense in fantasy football. This year, the Cowboys are racking up fantasy points via sacks and turnovers. Dallas leads the league in the former category with 29 and is tied for third in takeaways with 12.

With double-digit fantasy points in five of seven games and a plus matchup on tap against the Chicago Bears in Week 8, Micah Parsons and the Cowboys are high on the list of this week's top defenses.

They aren't No. 1 though.

Good Matchups

Cade York, Cleveland Browns (vs. CIN)

For all the things that have gone wrong for the Browns this season, York has quietly put together a solid rookie campaign. He's eighth among kickers in fantasy points and draws a Bengals team in Week 8 that leads the NFL in fantasy points per game allowed to kickers.

San Francisco 49ers Defense (at LAR) (DraftKings DFS Value: $3,100]

On some level, it might seem odd to be recommending a defense that just got a forty-burger dropped on it at home. But the Rams are a mess offensively right now, no team is allowing more fantasy points per game to defenses this season and the Niners already posted one fat score against Los Angeles this year.

Bad Matchups

Chris Boswell, Pittsburgh Steelers (at PHI)

Boswell is one of the more underrated kickers in the league. But the Steelers are among the lowest-scoring teams in 2022, and the Eagles are last in fantasy points per game given up to kickers.

Pittsburgh Steelers Defense (at PHI) (DraftKings DFS Value: $2,400)

Frankly, given the often-untenable positions it has been put in, Pittsburgh's defense has played well, especially with T.J. Watt on the shelf. But this unit shouldn't be anywhere near the starting lineup in a battle for Pennsylvania that will all but certainly be one-sided.

Sleeper

Washington Commanders Defense (at IND) (DraftKings DFS Value $2,600)

The Commanders aren't a good defensive football team or even a good fantasy defense. But Sunday, Washington faces a Colts team trotting out a quarterback in Sam Ehlinger whose next pass in a game that counts will be his first.

Before we get to the top 100 players for Week 8 (a list that can be of assistance when making "flex" decisions), the weekly caveats and whatnots must first be dispensed with.

Caveat No. 1 is the same as every other week: There are no quarterbacks included in this top-100. If your fantasy league utilizes a "superflex" spot, then the best play there is almost always a quarterback. P.J. Walker's stat line last week would have landed him in low-end RB2 territory.

Caveat No. 2 brings good news and bad news. The good news is that only two teams are on a bye in Week 8. The bad news is that those teams are the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers. No Patrick Mahomes this week. Or Austin Ekeler. Or Travis Kelce.

Finally, a bit of friendly advice. Last week, I made a last-second lineup switch that cost me a win. I won't get into who—the wounds are still too fresh. But I've been kicking myself ever since. Generally speaking, your first inclination with lineup decisions is the one you'll have the easiest time living with. Much more often than not, last-second changes wind up being regrettable ones.

Sigh.
