49ers Players Who Should be on the Trade Block After Week 3
The San Francisco 49ers were mentioned in the same sentence as the word "trade" all offseason.
Jimmy Garoppolo is no longer on the trade block after he took over as the starting quarterback. Trey Lance's season-ending ankle injury will prevent the 49ers from making any trade involving a quarterback in 2022.
San Francisco still has a few tradeable players on its roster, all of whom are not playing as much as they may hope through three weeks.
The 49ers still have to figure out their running back depth chart behind Jeff Wilson Jr., but there is a chance one of Marlon Mack and Tevin Coleman do not make an impact on the team.
Defensively, the emergence of Drake Jackson as a reliable pass-rusher could make one of the veteran defensive ends on the roster more expendable.
The 49ers may not want to make any trades at the moment because of the fear of losing more key players to injuries.
Marlon Mack or Tevin Coleman
Marlon Mack and Tevin Coleman were brought in as insurance options at running back in the last few weeks.
The 49ers are thin at running back after Elijah Mitchell and Tyrion Davis-Price went down with injuries.
Jeff Wilson Jr. is the feature back in the offense right now, and that leaves Mack and Coleman to fight for snaps with rookie Jordan Mason.
Kyle Shanahan and his staff have a history of letting young, unproven running backs earn snaps in their offense. Just look at what Mitchell was able to do as a sixth-round pick last season.
The 49ers may like what they see out of Mason more over the next few weeks, and that could lead to Mack and Coleman not having roles with the franchise.
If Mason shines, the 49ers could look to the trade market to get a late-round draft pick in exchange for a veteran running back.
There is typically no shortage of needs for running backs across the NFL as the season goes on, and Mack or Coleman could end up making more of an impact elsewhere than in San Francisco.
Kerry Hyder
The 49ers may be more inclined to give snaps to rookie Drake Jackson over Kerry Hyder as the season goes on.
Jackson was on the field for two more defensive snaps in the Week 3 contest against the Denver Broncos.
Hyder has not played more than 30 percent of defensive snaps in the first three weeks. He could be considered surplus at one of the few positions that has not been affected by injuries on the 49ers roster.
The former Detroit, Dallas and Seattle player is two years removed from an 8.5-sack season in San Francisco.
He could be an enticing option on the trade market for teams in search of pass-rushing help, especially if Jackson begins to play more behind Samson Ebukam.
The 49ers may be willing to play Jackson more because he is the future of the franchise. That could keep Hyder's defensive snap count beneath 30 percent for most of the season.
Hassan Ridgeway
It is hard to find a position on the 49ers roster that has not been impacted by injury. Issues on certain parts of the roster will prevent the 49ers from even considering a trade of players.
The defensive line may have the best trade targets from a feasibility standpoint. Hassan Ridgeway could be intriguing to some teams in need of interior help.
Ridgeway played 19 defensive snaps in the first two weeks. He played 41 percent of the defensive snaps in Week 3 because Arik Armstead was out with a foot injury.
The 49ers may not be willing to part ways with Ridgeway because of the value he provides as a depth option when Armstead is healthy.
But in terms of who is actually tradeable right now, Ridgeway fits the billing because he is a veteran and will not receive a significant total of snaps when everyone is healthy.
The 49ers may not be willing to do any business on the trade market because of how decimated the roster already is by injuries, but if they were to go on a losing run, Ridgeway may a veteran who could be shipped out to collect a late draft pick.
