Why Drew McIntyre Should Beat Roman Reigns at WWE Clash of the Castle

Why Drew McIntyre Should Beat Roman Reigns at WWE Clash of the Castle

Aug 12, 2022

At WWE Clash in the Castle, Roman Reigns will face a new challenger. While he has competed with Drew McIntyre before, it was never with a world championship on the line.

The two will fight at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, a first-time arena for WWE. It will have a unique energy, helped by the main event including The Scottish Warrior, who will likely have plenty of supporters in the British crowd.

In many ways, this has the air of a special moment. Reigns is going into the match as an unstoppable champion, but he is facing a challenger with a uniquely captivated crowd behind him.

The set-up is perfect for one of most exciting and memorable moments in 2022. We could see McIntyre dethrone Reigns, ending his near-two-year reign, and it's a scenario that should happen on September 3.

The following are the four biggest reasons why McIntyre is ready to dethrone Reigns and why he should do so at Clash at the Castle.

Surprise Move

By the time Clash in the Castle begins airing, Roman Reigns will have been the universal champion for nearly two years. That is a monumental accomplishment that has not been seen in decades.

It seems The Head of the Table will be champion forever. Who could defeat him when he stands so far above the pack?

When Reigns first became universal champion, Drew McIntyre was the WWE titleholder. They were on an even footing. They had a memorable clash at Survivor Series that ended with The Tribal Chief coming out on top.

Since then, the Scot has fallen down the ranks while Reigns has only grown. How could McIntyre win now when he could not before? Many factors could play into the result, but the surprise of The Scottish Warrior winning out would be felt by everyone.

In Cardiff, he can go from afterthought to household name again. That is a truly special idea.

WWE has rarely put on overseas shows at the scale of Clash at the Castle. This will be a stadium event for many fans who might never have seen the company in live action before.

Drew McIntyre has rarely been the hometown star in WWE, and while Cardiff isn't his Ayr, Scotland birthplace, this may be the closest he will get, especially for a PPV.

The crowd will be electric, and McIntyre will be their guy. This is about as special an atmosphere as WWE will deliver all year.

Imagine the pop if the Scot dethroned Reigns after a hard-fought battle. It would feel like a star was born all over again.

This time, The Scottish Warrior would be a world champion in front of a live crowd, something he never got in his first two reigns. That means something, and WWE would be missing out on a major moment by failing to take this chance.

Brings World Titles Back to Weekly Television

Reigns controls WWE. As the face of the company, he has captured both the Raw and SmackDown world championships, yet he appears less and less on either show.

Drew McIntyre is one of the rare stars who has the size and pedigree to dethrone The Head of the Table, which means he has the ability to hold the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship until the titles are split between Raw and SmackDown again.

Unlike Reigns, McIntyre will compete every week. He may not be able to make both shows every time, but he will be present for the vast majority of them.

This will improve both Raw and SmackDown, as it will be clear the top star is around and ready to fight the top contenders.

Without a world champion to aim for—especially on the red brand—many Superstars have looked aimless, and that makes for far less compelling television.

It's time to make Raw and SmackDown more exciting again.

Sets the Stage for Exciting Road to WrestleMania 39

A fighting champion holding all the gold will lead to some of the most exciting and tense months of television that WWE fans have seen in a long time. Who will step up? Will McIntyre defend both titles at once or offer to defend each individually?

While The Scottish Warrior has been around for a while, he does not have many major feuds to his name. It would be intriguing to see him contending against the likes of Karrion Kross, Bobby Lashley, Finn Balor, Kevin Owens, Gunther and Sami Zayn, to name a few.

With Triple H at the helm of WWE Creative, there are also plenty of interesting possibilities with a new draft on the horizon and an NXT roster that could surprise many with a call-up in the right situation.

McIntyre is one of the absolute best. He can work with anyone and tell a unique story. Whoever challenges him will be able to build themselves up even if they end up losing to him.

Reigns would also be a king without a crown, and that could make him all the more dangerous when he is around. What will he do to get his gold back? Who will he challenge in order to keep his top billing?

Without the gold, The Tribal Chief facing The Rock at WrestleMania 39 would make more sense. The world titles will be kept separate from one of the biggest matches in WWE history, spreading the wealth for a huge show in Los Angeles.
